Feb 03 2017 (07:11)   Union Budget: Rs 5,102 cr allocated for railway project in Odisha

BHUBANESWAR: The Union Budget 2017 presented in Parliament on Wednesday came as a fair deal for Odisha with a total of Rs 5,102 crore allocated for different railway projects in the state. It is the highest-ever budgetary allocation to the state till date. This year, the state government had demanded before the central government to allocate Rs 5, 870 crore for development of railway infrastructure in the state.
In 2015-16, the state had received Rs 3,712 crore against its demand for Rs 3,200 crore. Last year, the state had received Rs 4,682 crore against government's demand for Rs 5,000 crore.
the specific details like project-specific allotments have not received by the East Coast Railway (ECoR), the zonal railway said the central government has allocated more funds than last year. "We will give all the details regarding fund allotment for infrastructure projects in the state on Friday. This allocation will help the ongoing projects to be completed in time," said ECoR general manager Umesh Singh.
Six railway projects are regarded as important projects for Odisha. These are four new lines - Khurda Road - Bolangir, Paradip-Haridaspur, Angul-Sukinda and Talcher-Bimalagarh, and doubling of two railway lines - Sambalpur-Titlagarh and Sambalpur-Talcher.
This year the state government has demanded the Centre to allocate Rs 500 crore for Khurda-Bolangir new line, Rs 300 crore for Talcher-Bimalagarh, Rs 200 crore each for Paradip-Haridaspur and Angul-Sukinda new lines respectively.
Khurda Road-Bolangir (289 km) new line was sanctioned in 1996-97, but the railway has completed only 54 km from Khurda Road side. It has not completed the first patch of 19 km from Bolangir. It has set a target to complete the project by March 2021. The state government has formed a joint venture with the Ministry of Railways to carry out the project.
Similarly, Angul-Sukinda new line (104 km) was sanctioned in 1997-98, but it is yet to be completed. Only 60 per cent of earth work of the project is completed. Though the state government has formed a special purpose vehicle (SPV) with Rail Vikash Nigam Limited (RVNL), Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) and Jindal Steel Power Limited to carry out the project with a cost of Rs 1600 crore, it will still take one more years to complete the project by June 2018.
Another old and significant project is Paradip-Haridaspur new line (82km) which was sanctioned in 1996-97. Only 75 per cent of the work has been completed till date. Railways sources said the project will be completed by March 2018. Keeping the project delay in mind, the government has formed a SPV with the Railways.
Talcher-Bimalagarh (154 km) was sanctioned in 2004-05 in order to reduce the distance between Bhubaneswar-Rourkela to 308 km (now it is 440 km) enabling one to travel between Bhubaneswar and Rourkela within 5-6 hours. But this project is just started. It will be completed by March 2021, said the railway sources.
Doubling work of Sambalpur-Titlagarh (182 km) rail line sanctioned in 2006-07 is in full swing. It will be completed by the end of this year. But doubling work of another important project Sambalpur-Talcher (174 km) sanctioned in 2010-11 is just started. The railway has set a target to complete it in March 2010.
Regarding progress of works, the ECoR sources said it has completed 133.62 km new lines and doubling in 2015-16. It has set a target to complete 230.12 km in the current fiscal. Last year, the ECoR had completed electrification of 160.64 km of railway lines, while this year it aims to finish 129.95 km of railway lines.
State hopes to get fund for the development of newlines announced last year to connect tribal dominated districts- Malkangiri and Nabarangpur- with Jeypore. If Jeypore-Malkangiri and Jeypore-Nabarangpur rail lines get completed, tribal people from these districts will get railway facility.

There is NOT A SINGLE DIRECT train for whole Western Part of India like CSTM, BCT, ADI & SURAT with in the KGP & CTC section of SER & ECoR. So, the peoples travelling to those cities are suffering huge problems.
Railways should run a train from HWH to CSTM via KGP, BLS & CTC.

Since a long demand for End to End WAP7 for Puroshottam Express, still Railways is not providing the same. Some time it is running with P4 instead of P7 and regular P4 from KGP to PURI & viceversa.
There should be a WAP7 ELS for SER as well ECoR.

My curiosity lies in what difference do you think a WAP7 would make, sir!
The differences in performance of a WAP7 & WAP4 are far too much alike to cause any significant change in a SF of Purushottam's capabilities...
For crawlers, yes , a P7 can do wonders but there would be no difference in Puru's performance as per what I think...
I should say that WAP4s are far more reliable when compared to WAP7s!

Why ? Train will run according to its time table and speed limits it's not like WAP 7 will make trains run like aeroplanes. Railways knows what they're doing, WAP 4 is not a steam locomotive. I don't know what's wrong with people.

Bhubaneswar first Indian city as one of the finalists in World Smart City Awards at Barcelona:
Bhubaneswar has become the first Indian city selected as one of the finalists to compete for the World Smart City Awards at Barcelona later this month.
The Odisha capital had topped among the first batch of 20 cities that were selected to be developed as smart
city, which is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s flagship programme.
According to urban development ministry sources, Bhubaneswar had submitted its proposal to the evaluating committee of the World Smart City Awards organised by Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC).
“Any Indian city being finalist is itself a big achievement since the smart city scheme was launched only a year ago. Developing 100 smart cities is a big task. Recognition of the efforts being made by Indian cities at global level will encourage other cities to do better,” a ministry official said. He added the Bhubaneswar team will have to make a presentation before the jury for getting an award.

Bhubaneswar bags third spot in World Smart City Awards 2016:
Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar came on as the second runners up in the World Smart City Expo Awards 2016 held at Barcelona on Wednesday.

The awards were selected under many categories after an unprecedented number of entries this year. The cities were shortlisted based on their cutting edge technologies for resolving urban challenges and
improving life of citizens.

Bhubaneswar was awarded for achieving social equity through new urbanism in action. It had already won the best smart city award in the country earlier this year.

The city administration had proposed the a model for developing and achieving social equity by placing children at the centre of its transformation building upon the New Urban Agenda’s three legged approach-local fiscal systems, urban planning, and basic services and infrastructure.

Kenya’s capital Nairobi is the winner of the challenge while Chennai came on the fourth spot, City Mayor AN Jena told newsmen. As many as 250 cities of 45 countries took part in the contest.
