Mar 26 2017 (20:42)   Unfair train fares push passengers skyward

NEW DELHI: An analysis by the Ministry of Railways has found that basic facilities provided to passengers travelling by premium trains are below par. However, they pay fares more than the cost of air travel on several routes due to the new flexi fare system.
In September 2016, the ministry introduced flexi fare system for premium trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto, which shot up the fare by 50 per cent. U nder the new formula, base fares increase from 10-50 per cent with every 10 per cent of berths booked.
analysis of complaints received by ministry over the last six months found that premium trains do not even have basic facilities.
Ravindra Gupta, Member Rolling Stock, Railway Board, has shot off letters to 16 zonal railways asking to improve the conditions. “It has been brought to the notice of the Board... that maintenance of passenger-carrying trains, including prestigious Rajdhanis and Shatabdis, is not up to mark. There have been several complaints on account of improper hygiene, cleanliness, toilets, fittings and bedrolls,” he said.
There has been demand to roll back the scheme as passengers are made to pay high fare at no upgradation of services in trains. From September 2016 to February 2017, the Railways earned `250 crore while it lost 1 lakh passengers on the routes of premium trains. The Railways runs 42 Rajdhanis, 46 Shatabdis and 54 Duronto.
On the other hand, most airlines, including the country’s official carrier Air India, have been wooing train passengers by offering tickets cheaper than the AC II fare in premium trains.
Listing out immediate corrective actions to bring perceptive change in the existing conditions, Gupta said maintenance of Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duranto trains has to be accorded highest priority and surprise inspections should be done at the Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) level.
“It should be ensured that the contracts like mechanised coach cleaning, clean train stations, on-board housekeeping and pest and rodent control are executed strictly to serve the purpose of these contracts. Availability of cleaning materials and equipments should be ensured,” Gupta wrote.
Other measures include biometric attendance of staff and CCTV cameras in coaching depots to monitor functioning of staff.

It doesn't work like airways varying depending upon day and demand. The first set of 10% of quota is allocated at base fare next 10% at 10% increase in base up to and continues till 50% with 50% increase on base fare from then all the berths from 50-100% berths available will be under 50% excess base fare category. In this case it has already hit the highest band.

A small trip by some members and admins of Bangalore on the soon to be antiqued NMGA RAILBUS service.
The to and fro trip had two crews, one LP and one ALP (both DMU crew members) who were very keen to share whatever they knew about the service. So much was their excitement that they took pics of we 'crazy railfans'. :)
There were about 15 travelers in the railbus including 4 from IRI. The fuel tank capacity is 65 litres and the railbus is filled to 3/4th of
the capacity which the crew claims serves them for 2 days. In other words, IR spends about 800 rupees on a one way YPR-NMGA service and the ticket sales are just in the range of rs 100-200 per day. Talk about IR making losses. :-/
But the journey was memorable, and a well cherished one knowing that the service may never run after tomorrow.

No entity of govt or private is getting diesel at subsidized rates now. Being bulk consumer they can get a discount of dealers commission ad they are supplied directly like that of SRTC's.

TRS MP and its Parliamentary Party Leader, A P Jithender Reddy, here on Wednesday, said that the work on the Hyderabad-Mahbubnagar Railway Line Doubling project and electrification at a cost of Rs 774 crore would begin on March 25.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu would lay the foundation stone for the project by remote control from Hyderabad.
Disclosing this to the media, Jithender Reddy said on Wednesday that the doubling work could be extended up to Benguluru later. Work on the present stretch would be completed in two-and-a-half years.
line would be of great help to the people travelling from Mahbubnagar everyday to Hyderabad. Similarly, an e-Postal Passport office would be inaugurated in Mahbubnagar on March 31.
He hailed the developmental works undertaken by the KCR led TRS government and said there was multipronged development in the State and it was racing towards the goals of 'Bangaru Telangana'.
In a separate statement, TRS MP K Kavitha's office informed media that the Morthad-Nizamabad Railway line would become operational on March 25.

How could the work be done from march 25th when rs 774 contract tender closing date is 22nd march. The company should be given mobilization advance and time of six months to start work. Starting a project is not like buying a soap from supermarket. They will just lay the foundation stone and no work will be taken up for some 4-6 months. A public show.

There is a proposal in SCR to give LHB to godavari express first then other trains. Till now the proposal is not materialized. For Telengana express they need 3 rakes and extra coaches too for maintenance. Moreover railways are giving LHB to single rake trains and new express trains so it I'll take time for telengana to get LHB.

Most of unreserved travellers are because of non availability of accoodation in sleeper class. Instead of putting more and more trains with different concepts increase the frequency of Guwahati Bangalore to 5 days a week and 2 days to dibrugarh making a daily link then the nber of AC coaches can be decreased to 6 and see that they are 6 general coaches in both the trains by adjusting sleeper. This will be more economical for IR as we'll as travellers. The present TVM Guwahati should be made 4 times SC Guwahati 2 Times and one day from tirupati by giving a separate slot from HWH and other destination trains. In thus way they will be two trains daily to Guwahati. They can extend each day to dibrugath as well from sc and tvm too.

GHY-SBC and GHY-TVC, ERS-PATNA shares same slot, so increasing the frequency is out of question. Now, railway will have to come up with new slot for these trains ti increase the frequency.

From where will they get extra loco at Naupada its neither a chance point or loco or has loco shed for provision of diesel loco as Vskp BbS is electrified line. It has enough of slack time in reverse in form of stoppages at Naupada Kurda road which are enough a delay of 15 mins for less turnaround time in Gunpur.
