Ever since he took the office of Rail Minister, Suresh Prabhu has been focusing on improving the cleanliness in Indian Railways and he is upset that nobody is talking about that while discussing the accidents.
“Yes there have been a few accidents recently and it is all very unfortunate but you can’t go on criticizing Indian Railways while ignoring our good work. Go and look at all the accident sites now and you won’t be able to tell if there ever had been an accident there. All the sites have been cleaned very nicely and most of them have functional wifi signal as well. However, our work towards Swachh Bharat is getting overshadowed by all these accidents”, Mr Prabhu said while speaking to our reporter.
Furthermore, he added, “We are focusing on reducing the accidents and hopefully we will reduce them too but till then, we can’t deviate from our mission to spread cleanliness. Our work there must be appreciated and acknowledged as well.”
When we asked if he is thinking about resigning after the rise in train accidents, he said ,”Arey yaar, why should I resign when even opposition isn’t asking my resignation? Good thing Ravi Shankar Prasad ji is in our party else he would have been demanding my resignation on every news channel by now.”

There should be a bill restricting use of airways by ministers only for urgent purposes and for rest things, use of trains should be made compulsory. Not only will they realise hardships of passengers, such direct conversation will give a better insight. But then, jab mygov.in mein showff kar k suggestions maang sakte hai then direct engagement ka time kiske pas hai.

Cannot be said. Train related accidents, derailments and deaths have never been lower in our Railways system. Somewhere Railway Board and previous and current RM are responsible for these casualties. e.g. Indian Railways could have completely shifted to LHBs long ago. But to this day, ICF coaches are manufactured.

Indian Railways present status show failure in decision making in so many grounds. Even if I believe that current RM MR Prabhu is running railways 100% purely without seeking/involving any political opprtunity(which he is not), being unable to realise the importance of LHB for 2 years of his tenure shows failure in deision cum policy making for not only his part but also the senior officials working under him in the RB.

The coaches are a very important, but not the most important. ICF coaches are 'less' safe than LHB coaches, but they are not accident prone failures that keep jumping off tracks all the time. Simple addition of CBC couplings can make them almost as safe as LHB coaches in most moderate derailments or accidents as they are anti-telescopic coaches too. Because of the screw couplings, this advantage is negated as instead of being locked together as one unit, the screw coupling allows the coaches to rotate freely thereby crushing them.
There are several logistic challenges required for switching to LHB, which are sadly not in place due to lack of co-ordination between the various departments of IR.

Primarily, the power supply on the coaches is the main problem. Lack of self-generating equipment, means that all trains have to be run with an EOG car, which both reduces capacity and increases running costs, which delayed their deployment. And the FIAT bogies on LHB coaches were not designed to be used for self-generating equipment, so IR's attempts, though somewhat half-hearted, could not find a viable solution for it and this delayed the deployment of LHB coaches even more. Even now, the deployment is under the expectation that HOG systems would soon come up.
While this was going on, CLW, which had received HOG-capable locos through the WAP5, happily ignored it and spent a lot of time on improving the WAP7 which was giving them problems as it was a 3 phase loco. All through this, they ignored the WAP4's which were operational and had no issues. And they ignored developing a HOG system for these locos. more than 20 years after building the WAP4 and more than 50 years after CLW started using Tap-changers, they are still 'researching' a HOG system for the WAP4!
There is a severe lack of co-ordination between all the various departments that needs to be addressed. Developments in individual departments out of sync with the others are just a way of wasting funds.

The number of trains equipped with CBC coupling are also very less. At the end whether the reason is lack of coordination, not so great R&D or anything else, it ultimately boils down to credibility and responsibility of senior officials. IMO people will be more willing to wait for world class stations than for basic issues like safety and punctuality.

NCR ne humlogo (NFR) k liye ek bhi train nahi chora hai. Bas media coverage aata hai Arunachal/Tripura connectivity ka. While other people celebrate overtakes, high speed run etc etc, we सफर here for days, and then suffer here for more hours, despite of on-paper high speed and feasible timings.

NR can be relatively better than NCR. But there are examples of extreme bad controlling by NR as well. Some days back, while other diverted trains were struggling in LKO-BE-MB-GZB section and getting delayed massively, Gorakdham made it to NDLS before time because Sinha Ji was travelling. I have seen/myself suffered in the MB-GZB section around Hapur.
To sum it up, everyone must be aware of what a nice train 12371/72 HWH-JSM-HWH was when it started. Today, the train is tormented in the NR very badly.
donot want to bash any state but considering NCR and NR together constitute a large part of UP, is it just a mere co-incidence or the actual fact that the whole UP is like this?

Railway authorities believe sabotage to be behind the derailment of the Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar Express which left 41 passengers dead and 23 injured on Saturday night.
This is the third major rail accident in two months and took place in Andhra Pradesh's Vizianagaram district near the Odisha border in a region which is a Maoist stronghold.
The latest mishap marks a major worry for Rail Bhavan as authorities are probing suspected ISI-Naxal design in the derailment of two trains--the Indore-Patna Express on November 20 in which 151 people were killed and the Ajmer-Sealdah Express on
December 28 in which 63 people were injured, both near Kanpur. One of the accused arrested by Bihar police has confessed to ISI being behind the accidents.
In the latest mishap, auth orities suspect the tracks were tampered with which led to derailment of nine coaches.“The area is known to be a Naxal-affected zone and there was a call for celebrating Shahid Divas. Foul play cannot be ruled out,“ an official said. He added that a goods train had passed on the same tracks at 10.05 pm, a patrol team had checked the tracks at 10.40 pm and another train passed through the spot at 10.52 pm. The accident took place at 11.15 pm.
“The train driver and guard are safe and fine. They heard a big cracker-like sound just before the derailment and felt no huge jerk,“ the official said.
Another official ruled out track fracture as the area is not very cold compared to north India. Normally , track fractures happen in places that witness extreme cold and hot climate alternately .
When contacted, divisional railway manager (DRM) of Waltair Chandralekha Mukherjee said, “We are not ruling out any possibility . It is surprising that both the tracks were broken. The shape of the breakage is also irregular.“
Three major accidents due to derailment in two months, killing around 190 passengers, poses a major security challenge to the staterun transporter with a vast network of 65,000 km.
Rail officials are surprised at the rising number of mishaps due to “sabotage“ and said top security agenci es must take the lead in securing the vast rail network.
The rise in accidents due to derailment since April last year compared to 2015-16 has raised serious questions over the lack of funding and vacancy of more than one lakh safety-related posts in the state-run transporter. There were 68 derailment cases since April last year while it was 52 in the corresponding period in 2015-16.
An official said there was a need to take a serious re-look at safety of railway infrastructure. He argued that technology alone couldn't be the solution and there should be frequent inspection of rail tracks, recruitment of more gangmen and regular safety audits.
The transporter hasdecided to speed up replacement of old ICF coaches with German-made Linke Hofmann Busch coaches which are equipped with advanced couplers and anti-climbing features.These prevent coaches from piling on top of each other in case of accidents and also stop them from crumpling.

रेलवे स्टेशन से तीन किलोमीटर दूर बिहार बार्डर के करीब इंगुरी मानव रहित ढाले की जगह रविवार को अंडरपास बना दिया गया। एक दर्जन इंजीनियर और दो सौ कर्मचारियों की फौज ने नौ घंटे में काम को अंजाम दिया। इसमें भारी भरकम मशीनों का इस्तेमाल हुआ। काम खत्म होने पर डीआरएम ने नारियल तोड़कर रेल संचलन शुरू कराया। निर्माण को देखने के लिए सैकड़ों ग्रामीण दिन भर जमे रहे। इस दौरान लंबी दूरी की चार ट्रेनें दूसरे रास्ते से चलाई गईं और चार सवारी गाड़ियां निरस्त रहीं।
पुल बनाने
का काम रेलवे के वरिष्ठ इंजीनिरों की देख रेख में 9:40 बजे शुjt हुआ। तकनीशियनों ने पहले रेल ट्रैक को काटकर अलग कर दिया। इसके बाद जेसीबी मशीन से निर्माण वाली जगह पर रेल ट्रैक को खोद कर मिट्टी हटाई गई। दूसरी मशीन ने लेवलिंग किया। फिर अंडरपास के ढांचे को भारी क्रेन के सहारे रेडिमेड उठाकर ट्रैक वाली जगह पर रखकर फिक्स किया गया। ब्रिज को फिक्स कर उस पर स्लीपर लगाकर रेल ट्रैक बिछाया गया। काम पूरा कराने को इंजीनियरों की टीम जुटी रही। इस बीच दोपहर 12 बजे डीआरएम एसके कश्यप भी पहुंच गए। देर शाम करीब साढ़े छह बजे रेल ट्रैक को जोड़कर खाली इंजन को पुल से गुजार कर टेस्टिंग की गई। डीआरएम ने नारियल तोड़कर अंडरपास के शुभारंभ की घोषणा की। वैशाली एक्सप्रेस के सकुशल गुजरने के बाद डीआरएम वापस चले गए।
