Begusarai: Even after more than ten months of Munger rail bridge being opened by PM Narendra Modi, passengers are yet to get the facility of any express train through this bridge. Moreover, the railways so far has been able to run only one passenger train and that, too, between Tilrath (a station between Barauni and Begusarai stations) and Jamalpur besides between Khagaria and Jamalpur stations. The mega rail-cum-road bridge was completed at a cost of about Rs2,700 crore last year following several delays from its scheduled time frame.
However, after it was thrown open for passenger traffic in April last year, people of Begusarai, Khagaria, Munger and Bhagalpur nurtured high hopes of getting the facility of some long-distance express trains through this

new route soon. Begusarai Rail User Association secretary Dilip Kumar Sinha said, “We have sent several reminders to zonal officials and Railway Board members in this regard, but to no effect.”
Sinha further said even some express trains like Bhagalpur-Jammu Tawi Amaranth Express, Jainagar-Howrah Dhuryan Express and Bhagalpur-Muzaffarpur Jansewa Express, which were proposed to be diverted through this route last year, had not been done either. “The bridge facilitates new route to Howrah and can be effectively used to lessen the load on the overburdened Barauni-Kiul-Howrah main line. However, what stops the railways from using the bridge to its potential is truly perplexing,” he added.
Commenting on the issue, East-Central Zone Rail User Consultative Committee member Sanjay Singh said they had raised the issue during two of their meetings with zonal officials, including the GM. “However, the officials’ approach appears to be lackadaisical in this regard,” he alleged.
When TOI asked a senior official of Sonpur rail division in this connection, he, on the condition of anonymity, said the problem was with Malda division as there was some problem related to signalling system. “There is absolutely no problem in running express trains through the bridge from our side,” he said.

On one hand IR always cry hoarse for lack of resources for creating much needed additional facilities and on the other hand fail to put any additional facility created with much difficulty to good use.
.
It appears that there was no concrete plan, how the very costly bridge shall be used so that even a small fraction of the huge amount spent by IR (Rs 1300 crores) on the construction of the bridge could be recovered!!!

If no significant benefit is to be derived, then why wasting huge amount of money which could have been better used to to decongest the saturated trunk lines. With the same amount, laying of third line between Aligarh & Kanpur could have been completed. A glaring example of misuse of funds by past RMs for political gains.

Jan 16 2017 (13:39)   Budget 2017: Indian Railways may hike fares as Ministry mulls safety cess

Budget 2017: Indian Railways may hike fares as Ministry mulls safety cess The railway ministry may push for a special levy on train fares to create a dedicated Rs 1.2 lakh crore safety fund; finance ministry likely to finance 25 percent of the this fund
Passengers may have to shell out more for travelling by train as the railway ministry may impose a specific cess on train tickets to fund the Rs 1.20 lakh crore safety fund-- Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Kosh. While fares for AC one-tier and two-tier are likely to see a marginal increase, passengers travelling on second class and AC three-tier could be hit harder because of a proportionately lower fare base. An announcement on imposing a safety cess on

train fares is likely to be announced in the budget for 2017-18, which finance minister Arun Jaitley is scheduled to present on February 1.
Last month, railway minister Suresh Prabhu had written to Jaitley requesting complete funding for the fund. The finance ministry, however, rejected the railway ministry’s proposal for financing of the new safety fund from the consolidated fund of India. The finance ministry has agreed to finance only 25 percent of the fund and has asked the railways to raise the remaining three-fourth of the required sources for the special corpus. This will be a specific cess, like the road cess collected on sale of diesel to build highways. The money collected through this cess will be pooled into the Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Kosh and administered by the railways for a specific purpose. A committee, constituted by the railway ministry, for putting together a consolidated proposal for creation of the safety cess, in its report, has envisaged works of track renewal and upgradation, bridge rehabilitation, elimination of level-crossings, construction of road over bridges/road under bridges, replacement and improvement of signalling system, among others. The cess will likely be part of the union budget with the government merging the railway budget with the central budget from 2017-18. A key reason for the abandoning the 92 year-old practice of a separate railway budget from 2017-18 may have been hastened by the state-transportation giant’s delicate balance sheet. It is learnt that the Railways Ministry had sought exemption from paying dividends to the Centre this year, amid rise in additional salary and pension spending following the seventh pay commission recommendations. A combined budget could free the Indian Railways from setting aside nearly Rs 10,000 crore towards dividends to the government every year. Once the budgets are merged, the financial stress can be moved to the Centre’s overall annual financial plan.

Train delays are a common occurrence for any UK commuter, usually caused by strikes or bad weather. But what would you do if  your journey into work was held up by a swan?
This was the fate of some rather unlucky commuters on Friday 13th, when their South West Train travelling from Teddington was forced to crawl at 3.2 kph as the bird waddled along the tracks for 3.2 km.
Footage taken by Dan Billingshurst, 23, shows the swan walking just a metre in front of the train, as it gradually pulls into Kingston Upon

GOPAL KRISHNAN V/TWITTER A swan was the cause of a train delay in the UK, as it waddled 3.2km down the track.
According to Metro.co.uk, Billingshurst said, "The train was rolling into the station at two miles per hour. People commuting to work were getting frustrated and one man was so annoyed he got on the tracks waving his laptop in one hand and tried to manhandle the bird. It was one of the most bizarre things I have ever seen."

CHENNAI: Chennai to Bengaluru in 30 minutes! No, this is not a figment of imagination, or worse a videogame, but a proposed mode of transport.
A US-based company which has embarked on an ambitious project to revolutionise the way people moved from one city to another has set its eyes on Chennai. The brainchild of Elon Musk, HyperLoop One proposes to propel people in travel pods at 1,200kmph through a tube propped up on concrete pillars. The pod or train is able to achieve the speed because it floats in a vacuum inside the tunnel.
If
...

the plan takes off, people will be able to zoom to Bengaluru in 30 minutes. Mumbai will be a little more than an hour away.
Recently, the company tweeted the routes it is interested in. These include Chennai-Bengaluru, Chennai-Mumbai, Bengaluru-Thiruvananthapuram and Mumbai-Delhi.
Hyperloop has approached Union ministry of road transport with a letter of intent. Sources said the routes being considered were meant to run bullet trains, and Japanese and Chinese teams have started studying the Chennai-Bengaluru route to find out if they can lay tracks to run high-speed trains.
On its website, Hyperloop says it can move people for the price of bus tickets and that they are going to charge for the time taken and not the transport. The team which is behind the project says it is planning to install prefabricated tubes atop pillars, a move aimed to cut down cost and time of construction. Solar panels on top of the tubes and windmills on the pillars to tap energy will further reduce operational cost. The pod uses magnetic system to move. It needs energy only when it begins the journey and can glide for more than 200 miles once it touches top speed.
The first line in the world is expected to come up between Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the next five years. It will cut down travel time from 90 minutes to 12 minutes.
However, engineers at Indian Railways are skeptical. "Any plan which aims at high speed connectivity is good. But they may take more than a decade to take off because of different reasons," a senior railway official said. "There will be procedural delays and time taken for approvals from the government."
It will take `300 crore to build 1km high-speed line, but HyperLoop, citing its San Francisco to Los Angeles plan, says it will take `72 crore per kilometre. But a railway official said cost will be an impediment. "It is difficult to fix ticket prices professionally because the government wants to keep them low. Going by the current rate of cost of construction, it will cost `6,000 to Bengaluru. The moment the fares are suggested, the government loses interest," he said.
High-speed trains in Kerala met with the same fate. The line from Thiruvananthapuram to Mangaluru was studied thoroughly but when the cost and fare were projected, it ran into trouble.
Whenever there's something good being built for the citizens the government or the officials always create obstacles by ways of paperwork.
Also, unlike in Dubai, land is not barren and free in India. It cannot be built along the highway because there are several bends and inclines. Since the pods will be shuttled at very high speeds, the tunnel will have to be built on a straight line with minimum curves. Besides the topography, governments take time to decide on new projects. Monorail in Chennai, for example, was mooted in 2011. But the project is yet to take off. Another stumbling block will be multiple-levels of approvals. New rail projects will have to go through Research Design and Standards Organisation inspection.
"Hyperloop is a new technology and a new regulatory body will have to be formed to ensure safety and accountability. It is unlikely that the government will allow the company to go unmonitored," said an official.

The pod or train is able to achieve the speed because it floats in a vacuum inside the tunnel.

the plan takes off, people will be able to zoom to Bengaluru in 30 minutes.

Chennai-Bengaluru journey in just 30 minutes by hyperloop can give a death blow to the airservices operating between cities as well as to a huge number of private vehicles plying between the two cities.
.
Costing just 72 Crore Rs/Km, Chennai-Bengaluru route should cost 22500 Crores.
Hyper Loop with 1200 kmph speed at economical (72 Crore Rs/Km)cost looks more promising than 350kmph
