If you are travelling alone in sleeper class, avoid lower/ Side lower or middle berth. Always opt for upper/ Side upper berths. As daily/ unreserved passengers boards and de-boards at various stations en-route and this goes till BSL. Due to this, sleeper class is looks like more or less a general class.

I have to visit Mumbai for 1 day business trip, arriving LTT by 18030 at 4:50 hrs. I have some queries:
1. How is the connectivity from LTT to MMRDA Exhibition Center, Bandra Kurla Complex? What is the fare in general for auto/taxi?
2. Cloakroom facility available at LTT? If yes, which platform?
3. How is LTT in general, I mean safety, ambiance
...
@ 4:50 in morning? Any dormitory available for quick fresh-up? Any good food outlet for breakfast?
PS: I'm not opting for any hotel or lodge as I have to stay in the city for 4-5 hrs only after that I have to continue my onward journey. Inputs from local members are appreciated. Thanks!

Many a times I have seen people were debating over late running of trains in NCR. I never get involved in any of these debates. Last week I went to visit my maternal aunt(Mausi) in Allahabad for some family function. My maternal Uncle (Mausa) works in NCR as a senior sectional engineer. So, it was a golden opportunity for me to ask him why trains run late in railways, especially in NCR? Discussion was very healthy and interesting. He told me railway tracks are over-saturated with traffic in NCR. Every year railways starts new trains on existing infrastructure which was originally designed to handle less than quarter of traffic(1/4) of present day. Right now NCR tracks are 400% saturated, than it was originally designed. He also told me that 70% of revenue are generated from freight traffic and Railways incures loss from passenger traffic from very first day of operation. He...

also discuss priority of trains in NCR. Summary are as follows (As he narrated to me):
Priority 1: Rajdhani Exp, Shatabdi Exp, Durnoto Exp and other 130 Kmph certified trains gets top priority. NCR specially defined “running window” for premier trains like Rajdhani Exp, Shatabdi Exp, Durnoto Exp trains. During this time no others trains are allowed on mainline. This is the reason East bound Rajdhanis from NDLS departs back to back (With few exceptions.). NCR adopts a policy of full clearance of next 20 kms on mainline for 130 kmph rated trains. That means every train in next 20 kms will be looped and 130 kmph train will get go ahead signal (green signal). VIP movement (Railway Minister, DRM, GM) special trains also comes in this category.
Priority2: Rapid freight trains. These trains contain items which scheduled to deliver within 24 hrs (NDLS-HWH and Vice-versa) such as seafood, etc. These trains are insured against any delay and if any delay caused, railway bound to pay insured amount to the client. Fare charged by the railways for these kind of trains are also higher than regular freight trains. Railway employees mocks these trains as “Freight Rajdhani”. These trains are rated at MPS of 110 kmph.
Priority3: On time running Superfast Trains.
Priority4: On time running Exp trains.
Priority5: Pre-scheduled freight trains. Trains are rated at MPS of 110 kmph.
Priority6: Late running Superfast Trains.
Priority7: On time passenger trains.
Priority8: Late running Exp trains.
Priority9: Pre-scheduled freight trains. Trains are rated at MPS of 75 kmph.
Priority10: Late running passenger trains.
Priority11: Unscheduled freight trains.

I thought my blog post is already very lengthy, so I skipped this part.
I did asked him (Maternal Uncle), say if a train starts 1 hr delay from NDLS or in course of get delayed, then it’s delay increases “exponentially” in NCR (As myself was victim of so called “Bermuda Triangle”, last summer my train 18202 NTV Durg Exp departed BSB 30 min late and arrived ALD 6 hr late) train runs via chunar-mirzapur. Firstly he smiled and said, you take much interest in Railways. Then I told him about IRI, he was surprised! He never know there is social network site dedicated to Indian Railways.
Anyway
...
he explained me as follows:
“Every railway zone in India has a dedicated time slot for freight movement, in your zone SECR (Durg, Chhattisgarh) movement of passenger trains are very less from midnight to early morning, that doesn’t means point man relaxes on his chair, No! At that time he is busy controlling fright traffic. But here we (NCR) have no such comfort of dedicated freight slot, all trains viz freight trains or passenger trains are sandwiched with each other, due to over-saturation of traffic. If a train starts journey with a delay or gets delayed in the course of journey, it de-rails from its scheduled time table slot. I let you know freight trains also runs on predefined schedule, railways has more pressure to run freight trains on time than passenger trains so that railway can deliver items in promised time to industries, which are main business client and source of income”.
“If a passenger train, runs with full patronage then also railway occurs loss of Rs. 900 – 1000 per km of run! (A surprise for me!!). Charge of freight has increased 4 – 5 times from last 3 decades, but not much increase in passenger fare, actually govt. gives subsidy to passenger fare. Freight charge in India is as per US/UK’s standards but passenger fare is on an average 3 times less than US/UK’s standard.”(High speed trains not taken into consideration, London/NYC Subway taken into consideration)
So, here comes answer to your query Gaurav, defence provide subsidy to defence people, yuva subsidy by HRD, etc. Actually railway provides indirectly 3 times subsidy to all Indians. :)
He continues…
“So, what railways earns from freight movement, has to spend to compensate loss occurred by passenger movement. Plus, railway has to ensure payment to its employees, to counter deprivation of rolling stock and rail infrastructure and allot budget for new railway projects. That is the reason why railways runs into loss, still passenger trains are running jam packed throughout the year.”

Thanks, my territory is SECR, I know about SECR not much about NCR. In this blog I'm sharing a Senior Sectional Engineer's (NCR) point of view on, "Why trains run late in NCR?" Appreciated for taking interest in my blog. :)

May be true, but according to my maternal Uncle Concar rakes are rated at 110 kmps MPS. Well here in SECR I guarantee you freight runs at snail's pace :D
