Please watch out for the correct train number from the board or listen to announcements very carefully if you are boardign this train at Chennai Central- since 12296 from Patna often reaches late there is always chance that both the up and down trains meet up at chennai Central and its very difficult to make out which side its heading as both have loco reversals
12296 is Bangalore bound(Via Katpadi, jolarpettai) and 12295 is Patna bound(Via Vijayawada, Nagpur, Itarsi, Jabalpur) Express

This reminds me of an old Sardarji joke. A sardarji boards GT Exp at Madras bound for New Delhi. At Nagpur by mistake gets on in to Madras bound GT. They used to meet at NGP those days. He gets on to his top berth. Around Wardha he asks his co-passenger when will the train reach Itarsi. Then he learns the train is bound for Madras. He says great Indian technology the upper berths are going to New Delhi and lower berths to Madras.

Train reached SBC at 11.50am on pf 2. Reached my place at 12.20pm. Very dirty train Prashanti Exp. EcOR should do something about it. PC guys were selling water for Rs 20 and Veg Breakfast for Rs 40. When I threatened them they gave for Rs 15 and RS 30. The catering is done by the infamous RK Associates. I think the owner is in prison now.

Take enough snacks/eatables from Madgaon since this train has a 10 minute halt there. After Madgaon, literally nothing edible is available onboard.

Cheaper version is Marusagar which has SL and general too. Rajdhani is not good for rail fanning as doors are closed and the windows are tinted. Usually they don't allow you to open the doors as pantry guys are busy stacking food near them. Marusagar any day.

For railfanning in konkan railway kerala sampark kranti express is best in the route. Has sleeper coaches, less stoppages , good punctuality and also less disturbance from unreserved passenger like the UP bihar routes.

It is the nearest railway station to go to Bandhavgarh National Park (35 km). Taxis and Buses are available from Station to Park. The nearest major railhead is Katni Jn, 100 km away by road and 60 km by rail.

I visited Bandhavgarh National Park in 2010. It is one the places where you have great chances for sighting a tiger. I took 6 jeep rides in 3 different routes and spotted tiger 4 times. Kanha,Ranthambore and Tadoba didn't spot any. April and May are the best months to spot animals as they come to a few waterholes left. Don't take the guaranteed elephant safari to spot tigers as they are stage set. Be sure not to wear bright colored clothes and carry a binocular.

Avoid this train if you are a cleanliness freak, and like to have food on time. They will give 2 bottles of water as soon as you board. Food is cold and will be served early.
bathrooms have no handwash, is dirty. Bed linens dirty as well. Avoid if you can.

If you are a cleanliness freak I think you would have to avoid IR as a whole. The word doesn't exist in IR's dictionary. Basically we Indians don't give much importance to hygiene or cleanliness.

Train hits vintage jeep parked for photoshoot
Passengers of Mangala Express had a narrow escape on Saturday morning when the train hit a jeep, parked on the tracks for photoshoot, near Basavanapura in Ramanagaram district, about 45 km from Bengaluru.
The train, with over 700 passengers, was travelling at a speed of 50 km per hour, from Mysuru to Bengaluru, when the incident occurred at 7.25 a.m.
youth from Bengaluru allegedly entered the restricted area, just less than 2 km from the Ramanagaram railway station, for photoshoot of a vintage jeep, Railway Protection Force (RPF) sources said.
The youth parked the vehicle on the track. They did not remove the vehicle even after hearing the sirens of the train.
The alerted drivers spotted the jeep and applied brakes. However, it halted after hitting the jeep, sources said.
The youth fled the scene, Ramanagaram police said.
While the jeep was damaged, the engine and track remain undamaged.
The train had to halt for nearly one hour as the technical staff and maintenance personnel of the railways had to issue green signal to move the train.

The decor was typical for a new train. Flowers and balloons announced the shiny blue coaches at the Hazrat Nizamuddin station in Delhi.
Smriti Jain/The Financial Express  The Hindu reported that its maiden journey towards Agra had its "its coaches, vestibules and toilets....spic and span."
But unlike the Delhi metro, India's fastest train looked like any other Indian train on its return journey, with "sinks choked with pan masala dregs, empty bottles and food packets lying on the floor and soiled toilets", according to a report in the Hindu. Is it that fast?
Indian Railways claimed that this would be the fastest-ever train in India, at a top operational speed of 160 km/hr. A quick search for other trains between Delhi and Agra reveals the fastest one before this, Bhopal Shatabdi, clocked over 150 km/hr in stretches.  Another metric showcased by the Railways was the journey time. The claim was set at 100 minutes. The train indeed covered the 188 km in 99 minutes. The runners-up, Shatabdi, reaches Agra in 117 minutes, but it departs from New Delhi railway station, which makes its journey 7km longer than Gatimaan, which originates at Nizamuddin.  Facilities The upgraded LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches looked pretty ordinary on the outside but featured LED reading lights, cushioned push-back seats, bio-toilets, and fragrance microbursters. Each coach had hosts and hostesses, suited up in blue blazers, beige collars and black trousers, who served packaged food out of a trolley. The catering style and etiquette was redolent of an airline, so was the food.
reshareit Veg and non-veg meals, further divided into north and south Indian snacks, were accompanied by sliced fruits and vegetables and tetrapacks of juice in the eight general AC coaches. Its appeal, though, lay in the packaging. The meals were reportedly fancier in the two executive coaches, and included muesli and cake too. Catering and a wee bit more legroom apart (due to fewer seats), an executive coach had no telling difference from its poorer cousin. Its ticket price, however, stood twice as high at Rs 1,500, compared to Rs 750 of the general AC coach. The train's capacity is 736 passengers in its 10 coaches.
IBNLive True to the coaches' airline ambience, there was infotainment on board, but it wasn't free Wi-Fi as expected. A new service called MyFreeTV, in a tie-up with the Railways, offered offline videos that could be accessed on a smartphone through their hotspot and a clumsy sign-up process. Saxena said it made more sense to have offline content than expect people to buffer online videos through patchy internet connectivity en route. However, the service in question was a wormhole to the past. The movies dated back to 70s and 80s Bollywood and comedy clips featured Raju Srivastav and the late Jaspal Bhatti. I'd rather look out a window and brood. The chairman of MyFreeTV said they would upgrade the menu in due time but were keener on shorter videos since "you can't finish a movie in 100 minutes". Moreover, the Railways would do well to pull the plug on the relentless shehnai music that plagued the public address system through the journey.

Wait for a few more days when these hostesses will start asking for tips etc. Let the fun begin. IMHO this will be a super flop show. I just pray to GOD that this train doesn't derail and scare off the potential foreign tourists.
