NEW DELHI: Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Thursday ruled out the bullet trains any time sooner, pointing out that the much-hyped project for such trains needs more feasibility studies before the government decides to implement it.

admitting at a programme of Aajtak TV news channel that the bullet train will take more time. "Since it is going to be a new thing in India, it requires a lot of feasibility studies before arriving at any concrete decision," he said, pointing out that his main focus is to increase the speed of the existing trains by improving the infrastructure. Prabhu was confronted by former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, who dismissed the very idea of the bullet trains as impractical and impossible. "It won't be possible to roll bullet trains out in India as it needs massive investment on infrastructure," Lalu said. The bullet trains were promised by the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections and among the first few announcements made by the Modi government was to have a bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.  In fact, its first Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda had even proposed Rs 100 crore in his railway budget last year to initiate work on the bullet train project.

Japan is a country well known for admiration and deep respect for tradition. Almost no country or community can match the level of discipline, humility and integrity as those of the people from the land of the rising sun. Known for creating some of the greatest inventions across various platforms,...

the Shinkansen is a record-breaking high-speed bullet train that operates in Tokyo since 1964. It is known for ferrying numerous passengers during peak hours and extremely vital for the functioning of Japan’s economy.
Any Mumbaikar might revel in pride hearing that as he or she has travelled by the suburban local trains that form the very heartbeat of Mumbai city. In four different sections that according to figures spans over 450 kilometres and ferries nearly 10 million people to and fro every single day. However, there is a vast difference between the conditions, quality and of course speed. While time is an important factor for everyone, the way it is put to use is starkly contrasting in both nations. India’s ‘chalta hai’ (basically acceptance of mediocrity) attitude is one of the main reasons why there is lack of progress, cleanliness, discipline and many other aspects that are cast away.
If any soul from outside the city takes a look at the railway station, he/she wouldn’t be surprised to find wrappers, spit stains from paan (betel leaf), leftovers, vomit, feces, etc lying on the platform or on the tracks. There is little time for the trains to be cleaned and one is certain to find rats and other pests. Go to Japan and you won’t find any of these – neither on the trains or the platform nor the tracks.
This video explains that 323 Shinkansen bullet trains depart Tokyo station every day and the cleaning crew’s job is to ensure each and every compartment is clean and ready for its next trip. However, the time available for a train to depart is less than eight minutes. That means every cleaner has just seven minutes to clean the compartment and ensure there is nothing left over from the previous trip. If only we Indians and our officials take cue and develop strong sense of cleanliness – internally and externally.
Watch how these workers ensure all the garbage is picked, the luggage racks are checked, food trays wiped, windows cleaned, floors swept and seats ready for the train’s next trip.

Nagpur: The Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (NMRCL) may use solar power in a big way to run the service and wants to tie-up with German government for technological and financial support, a senior official said. can be used for the Metro railway stations. The solar system, once installed, will meet 40 per cent of the energy requirement, including traction power, he said. The corporation will not spend any money for generating this power. The project will be executed by an operator, said NMRCL Managing Director Brajesh Dixit, who recently visited Germany to study the project's feasibility. The German government is positive about the project and federal government agency GIZ has shown interest in giving the know-how for solar project of Nagpur Metro, he said. "KfW, a German government-owned bank, is also willing to provide soft loan as well as extending technical know-how for Nagpur metro's solar project. It is already funding solar projects in India in coordination with IREDA and Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy," Dixit said, adding that European Investment Bank too was going through the proposal. Dixit, accompanied by assistant engineer Rajiv Yelkawar, had visited Frankfurt and Berlin earlier this month. The German agencies also showed readiness to fund the Rs 3,000 crore needed for the Metro project, Dixit said. "If French agency FDA does not provide Rs 1,500 crore as planned and agreed earlier, Germany is ready to provide this sum too," he added. Teams from German agencies will visit the city in the last week of this month to evaluate the project. Meanwhile, taking a step ahead and giving momentum to the ambitious work of Nagpur Metro Rail, Maharashtra Chief Secretary Swadheen Kshatriya yesterday inaugurated the commencement of work of geo-technical investigation in Metro Rail project. Dixit, Divisional Commissioner Anoop Kumar, NIT Chairman Shyam Wardhane, District Collector Abhishek Krishna, were present on the occasion. Geo-technical Investigation plays a crucial role in designing of the most important and critical component of the entire Metro Rail System. The soil investigation will reveal strata of soil for laying the foundation of Metro Rail, an official release said. PTI

Former Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi today took a swipe at the Centre's bullet train project, saying it should care about the suburban local commuters first, who are forced to travel like "cattle" in peak hours here.
Trivedi pointed out the jampacked

and highly overloaded suburban local trains here and said, "Just see how the people are forced to travel like cattle. Even cattle travel better than this."
Debunking the idea of bullet trains, he said, "First think about these people, and then talk something else. On one side we talk about 'Chandrayaan' and on the other side these people are forced to travel like this."
"First make common man's travel dignified and then talk about bullet trains. The bitter part of the truth is that the foundation of Indian Railways is shaken," he added.
Trivedi was in the city as a member of Lok Sabha Petition Committee comprising 15 MPs under the chairmanship of Bhagat Singh Koshyari.
He claimed that the Indian Railways was heading the "Air India way".
"I don't want to get into the political system but the very fact is that Railway is bankrupt now and it is going the Air India way," Trivedi said in reply to a query on what was his assessment over the present government's efforts to bring structural reforms in Indian Railways.
"Many things have gone very serious with the Railways... it is not going in the direction where it should go," he told PTI.
Stating that Indian Railways has all the potential to carry forward India on the path of progress, he further said we can learn a lot from China which has brought a paradigm shift in the rail sector.
"China was once lagging behind us by 15 years, but see now what has happened there. It has leaped 100 years ahead," he said.
The ex-minister also said that Indian Railways has competent and efficient officers who have all the capability to reform it.
Meanwhile, a committee comprising 15 MPs today visited suburban Bhandup and Ghatkopar stations and took stock of the prevailing conditions there following a petition submitted by NGO Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh to the Lok Sabha through Kirit Somaiya.
The members also visited the spot at Ghatkopar station, where a student of SNDT college student Monica More had lost both her hands after falling of while trying to board the train.
Also, they briefly interacted with her.
Few MPs who were part of this visit were Bhagat Sigh Koshyari (chairman of committee), Dinesh Trivedi , Rajan Vichare (MP from Thane) and Dharmendra Yadav.
These MPs held formal discussions with the representatives of the Ministry of Railways and said that necessary action would be taken after due deliberations on all points involved.
"We have gathered necessary information and this visit is really going to be fruitful for the people of Mumbai," said Bhagat Sigh Koshyari, Chairman of the committee.
Top brass of central railway including General Manager and Divisional Railway Manager of Mumbai Division also accompanied the committee.
Madhu Kotian, petitioner in the case and president of Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh said, "This is good to see our MPs acting here following my petition and this time I am very much hopeful that this visit would come out with fruitful results, unlike in the past."
Kotian lauded the efforts of Somaiya and hoped that under his leadership the commuter woes will come to end.

The driver of the train hit the brakes at once when he heard a huge clang, immediately followed by a heavy jolt. He then alerted the Thirukoilur police. They collected three pieces of iron bars which were placed ostensibly to block the train. Following the incident, policemen were sent to guard the rail track in the area.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Western India Passengers’ Association based in Mumbai, with chapters at Pune, Palakkad and Tiruvalla, has demanded a comprehensive and substantial revision of Railway timetable across India as most trains run at a much lower speeds than the stipulated and CRS (Commissioner of Railway Safety)-sanctioned maximum speed limits, which in...

most sectors are 110 / 105 / 95 kmph (kilometers per hour).
The association said that apart from causing inconvenience and losses to passengers, such slow-moving trains eat up scarce ‘Paths’ (a particular time slot along the entire route),  resulting in inability to operate more trains on that route. This is one of the main reasons that passenger operations in Railways are running at a heavy loss amounting to Rs 26,000 crore per annum, which is made up from freight revenue.
The association said that  though the above sections have witnessed huge doubling work, the trains are not speeded up at the required rate for a long time. A total of 1409 km of lines on the Jayanti Janata Express route has been converted to double lines in the last few years.
‘’Similarly, a total of 313 km of lines have been doubled from Mangalore junction to Shornur junction. These lines and traction improvements have not resulted in increased running speeds for trains. The association has been raising the issue of speeding up 16381 / 16382 Mumbai - Kanyakumari Jayanti Janata Express for the past few years. This is the first direct train from Mumbai to Kerala, which commenced operation on  January 26, 1976, to Cochin Harbour Terminus and later got extended to Kanyakumari via Thiruvananthapuram in 1998 after the introduction of Netravati Express via Konkan Railway,’’ the association said.
The train 16381 CST Mumbai - Kanyakumari Express is running at a snail’s pace with an average running speed of 48 kmph via Pune, Guntakal, Salem, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram, taking 44.15 hours to reach its destination and 45.30 hours on its return journey, involving 2 nights.  This train is still running on a schedule prepared 30 years back. Though most passengers from Mumbai do not prefer to travel by this train, this is the only daily train connecting Mumbai and Pune to Palakkad.
‘’In spite of several demands to speed up this train in the last decade as several hundreds of km of rail lines have been doubled en route, Southern Railway, especially Trivandrum Division, has not shown any willingness to revise the timings,’’ the association said.
This train gets detained at several stations between Pune and Salem as the train reaches up to 30 minutes before schedule, as it cannot leave before the published scheduled time of departure.Though 1409 km of rail lines have been doubled in the last three decadesi, Southern Railway is unwilling to speed up the train till now.
