BENGALURU: The Bengaluru-Hassan superfast train, which was flagged off by railway minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu at Yeshwantpur Railway Station on Sunday, has been named Gomateshwara Express. Prabhu chose the name after former prime minister H D Deve Gowda suggested that since it passes through Shravanabelagoala, the Jain pilgrimage centre known for its monolith statue of Gomateshwara, on the 167-km Bengaluru-Hassan stretch, it should be named either Gomateshwara Express or Hemavathi Express. Hemavathi is the prominent river in Hassan district.
Use TOI network to get traffic on your site Colombia Recommended By Colombia Chief minister Siddaramaiah, Union minister H N Ananth Kumar, industries minister R V Deshpande, and former chief minister and Congress MP M Veerappa Moily attended the function. "I thank the
Centre for fulfilling the long-cherished dream of the people of this region to have the rail link. After hitting many roadblocks, the project has seen the light of the day," said Gowda, during whose tenure the project was sanctioned in 1996. Among the other demands Gowda, who represents Hassan constituency in the Lok Sabha, put forth before the railway minister were new direct Mysuru-New Delhi train, Mysuru-Mumbai train, Karwar-Hubli line, and Kadur-Chikkamagaluru line. He also demanded electrification of Bengaluru-Hubli-Kalaburagi line and naming the Bengaluru-Arsikere train after Kala Byraveshwara. Ananth Kumar urged the railway minister to expedite the process of sanctioning suburban train service for Benagluru city and a direct rail line linking Bengaluru and Mangaluru.
The regular train service of Gomateshwara Express will commence on Monday and two trains of 14 bogies each will ply daily stopping at Chennarayapatna, Shravanabelagola, B G Nagar, Yediyur, Kunigal, Nelamangala and Chikkbanavara. The Hassan-Yeshwantpur Intercity Express (22680) will leave at 6.30 am. and reach Yeshwantpur at 9.15am. In the return direction, the Yeshwantpur-Hassan Intercity Express (22679) will leave at 6.15pm. and reach Hassan at 9pm.

Yesterday (12:19)   3AC coaches preferred over sleeper class by Railways?

Predominance of sleeper coach passengers showing a downward trend.
In the years to come, in keeping with India's reputation of being one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, there is every possibility that trains on the Indian Railways network will have more air-conditioned coaches than sleeper ones.
Officials, while agreeing that it is a long-term transition and could take a better part of the decade, said the first signs of this significant socio-economic change is now beginning to show in the travel patterns of the railways.
statistics maintained by the statistics directorate of the railways show that between April 1, 2016 and March 10, 2017, 3AC coaches carried 17 per cent of all passengers in long-distance trains. These 3AC coaches however accounted for 32.60 per cent of all the earnings from passenger fares.
In contrast, Sleeper coaches carried 59.78 per cent passengers and contributed about 44.78 per cent of passenger earnings. Infact the numbers show that the predominance of Sleeper coach passengers is showing a downward trend. Last year the share of these coaches was 60.60 per cent of passengers and 45.94 per cent of earnings.
The 3AC class on the other hand showed a northward trend and increased its passenger share from 16.69 per cent last year to 17.15 per cent, and it increased its share in passenger earnings from 32.60 per cent last year to 33.65 per cent between April 1, 2017 and March 10, 2017.
In reply to a query by DNA on whether the railways would progressively move towards 3AC trains on more routes, Railway Board Member (Traffic) Mohammad Jamshed replied in the affirmative. "Yes of course, 3AC shall be gradually increased," Jamshed said.
According to officials, the performance of Humsafar trains, which are trains with only 3AC coaches, over the next few months will make the picture clearer. "India's aviation market is the fastest growing in the world. We just crossed Japan this year as the nation with the third highest number of domestic air-travellers. That is a good benchmark for the increasing upward mobility of Indians. In such a scenario, the effect of economic progress will play its part on train travel patterns as well. The process of the sleeper class going downward and more passengers travelling by AC classes has begun and will get more pronounced in the years to come," explained a senior railway official.

Yes. Too much subsidy for sleepers.
Intersecting figures, more than thrice the no. of passengers travel in SL as compared to AC but the total earnings from both the class has a mere difference of 3 thousand crores.

Yesterday (12:17)   For Railways, AC 3-tier is the only coach on profit track

Jayashree ❖ Amita*^   35859 news posts
Entry# 2212350   News Entry# 297785         Tags   Past Edits
NEW DELHI, MARCH 26:   The AC 3-tier passenger segment is turning out to be a money-spinner for the Railways, which explains why the national transporter is focussing on it.
For instance, the Railways has introduced Humsafar trains, which have only AC 3-tier coaches, on routes where passenger traffic is high.
While the Railways usually does not share segment-wise profit data, figures from the Comptroller and Auditor General show that only the AC 3-tier — not even AC-1, AC 2-tier or chair car — segment is making operational profits. Within the AC segment, more
people travel in the 3-tier segment than in the AC-1, AC-2 and chair car put together, according to the Railways’ data.
From April 1 to March 10 this fiscal year (FY17), 8.4 crore passengers travelled by AC 3-tier against 5.4 crore in the other AC segments. While AC-1 carried 30 lakh passengers, AC-2 and AC chair car booked 2.5 crore and 2.6 crore people, respectively.
Asked if this was the rationale for raising the share of the AC 3-tier segment, Mohd Jamshed, Member–Traffic, Railway Board, replied in the affirmative. He declined to comment on segment-wise profits or losses. Data for 2014-15 show that of the total loss of ₹32,000 crore, the sleeper class accounted for almost a third, followed by second class (26 per cent), ordinary class (23 per cent) and the suburban segment (14.41 per cent).
As for operating losses, the ordinary class runs at a 65 per cent loss, followed by EMU suburban services (64 per cent), second class (43 per cent) and sleeper class (41 per cent), respectively.
Railway officials declined to comment on any increase or rationalisation in passenger fares now that the elections in five States are over.

Since ACII class is the only money spinner, IR should try to maximise the number of passengers in this class by putting in more and more new ACIII coaches into service, so that the availability of ACIII berth is easiest amongst all classes. Surprisingly, getting reservation in ACIII is most difficult!
It is good to note that IR is oflate putting due emphasis on ACIII coaches.

Yesterday (12:17)   Railway to have integrated software for instant data collection

Jayashree ❖ Amita*^   35859 news posts
Entry# 2212478   News Entry# 297786         Tags   Past Edits
The railways is firming up an integrated software, a first-of-its-kind for the national carrier, for data collection in fastest possible time.
Various functions of the railways such as passenger reservation, movement of goods trains and asset management will be brought within the ambit of the software.
Named as 'One ICT', the sophisticated software would cost about Rs 5,000 crore over the next five years and will cover the entire gamut of functional requirements of the railways, said a railway ministry official.
software will use digital technology for better connectivity of goods and services with the market and efficient internal management, leading to higher customer satisfaction, he added.
"Numerous stand-alone software have been developed by the railways for various purposes. For the first time, we are moving towards an integrated software which will be like a single-window system," said the official who is involved in the project.
To develop the software, the railways will organise a day-long conference, involving leading software companies, here tomorrow to draw the roadmap. It is likely to form a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to develop it.
The conference would be inaugurated by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.
'One ICT' will cover all the aspects, including cost analysis, attendance, accounting, asset management, medical management and land management, of the railways.
Better capacity and asset utilisation would help the railways run more trains, carry more freight, provide better and reliable services to passengers, increase its revenues and make its operations more safe.
This will be ensured by the 'IR-OneICT' platform with the help of best-in-class technology and world class business analytics, advanced software solutions available and automated data collection from a single source with real-time availability, said the official.
The public carrier has scaled up its IT expenditure from Rs 336 crore in 2016-17 to Rs 513 crore in the 2017-18 financial year.

A very good step which can help IR by giving vital data/ reports and analyses. This in turn shall enable IR to take right decisions, so that better utilisation of all the resources deployed could to done and efficiency/ profitability of IR could be increased.
But all this could happen only when IR takes the right decisions based on the data/information reveived and implement them in true spirit. Else the money spent shall be wasted.

NEW DELHI: An analysis by the Ministry of Railways has found that basic facilities provided to passengers travelling by premium trains are below par. However, they pay fares more than the cost of air travel on several routes due to the new flexi fare system.
In September 2016, the ministry introduced flexi fare system for premium trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto, which shot up the fare by 50 per cent. U nder the new formula, base fares increase from 10-50 per cent with every 10 per cent of berths booked.
analysis of complaints received by ministry over the last six months found that premium trains do not even have basic facilities.
Ravindra Gupta, Member Rolling Stock, Railway Board, has shot off letters to 16 zonal railways asking to improve the conditions. “It has been brought to the notice of the Board... that maintenance of passenger-carrying trains, including prestigious Rajdhanis and Shatabdis, is not up to mark. There have been several complaints on account of improper hygiene, cleanliness, toilets, fittings and bedrolls,” he said.
There has been demand to roll back the scheme as passengers are made to pay high fare at no upgradation of services in trains. From September 2016 to February 2017, the Railways earned `250 crore while it lost 1 lakh passengers on the routes of premium trains. The Railways runs 42 Rajdhanis, 46 Shatabdis and 54 Duronto.
On the other hand, most airlines, including the country’s official carrier Air India, have been wooing train passengers by offering tickets cheaper than the AC II fare in premium trains.
Listing out immediate corrective actions to bring perceptive change in the existing conditions, Gupta said maintenance of Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duranto trains has to be accorded highest priority and surprise inspections should be done at the Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) level.
“It should be ensured that the contracts like mechanised coach cleaning, clean train stations, on-board housekeeping and pest and rodent control are executed strictly to serve the purpose of these contracts. Availability of cleaning materials and equipments should be ensured,” Gupta wrote.
Other measures include biometric attendance of staff and CCTV cameras in coaching depots to monitor functioning of staff.

From September 2016 to February 2017, the Railways earned `250 crore while it lost 1 lakh passengers on the routes of premium trains.
1 lakh passengers thoda jada estimate ho gaya but if true then Rs 1000 ke bhi rate se 10 crore ka loss which is negligible infront of 250 crores profit. This is why Railways shows no mood to let it go. And with new upgradation policy they will manage to fill this 1 lac seats also jisse jada nahi to 50% bhi cost recovery ho jayega
