Talgo’s coaches have successfully completed their first run loaded to full capacity at a speed of 180 kmph between the Mathura to Palwal stretch today. The trial was done at speeds of 170 kmph and 180 kmpt between the two places. Vijay Kumar, Executive Director, Infrastructure at Railway Board told FE Online that with this high-speed trial complete, the Indian Railways will now test the emergency braking distance system of the train. That will go on till July 26, he said.
This is a big shot in the arm for Suresh Prabhu-led Indian Railways’ plans to run high-speed trains on existing Indian tracks. After these stage-two trials the Talgo coaches, that are currently being pulled by an Indian engine, will be tested

on the Delhi to Mumbai Rajdhani route. The trials will begin some time in early August will be crucial for the fact that they will test Talgo’s claim of completing a train journey between the two metro cities in less than 12 hours.
The 9-coach train began its high-speed trials on July 9 and on July 13, the train hit the 180 kmph speed mark with its coaches empty. The distance between Mathura and Palwal was covered in record 39 minutes. This speed is said to be the fastest till date on Indian tracks, beating the likes of Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Gatimaan. According to Vijay Kumar, “This is a first of its kind trial that the Indian Railways is undertaking.” “We normally test all newly designed coaches, but with Talgo, three-stage trials are being conducted, which has never happened before to the best of my knowledge,” Vijay Kumar had told FE Online last week.
Indian Railways’ Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) is conducting the three-phase trials of Talgo’s coaches. It is only after these extensive trials are completed and a report on the same analysed, will the Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu take any decision on using the Talgo coaches for Indian Railways.

New Delhi, July 25 (Agencies): A train rammed into a minibus ferrying 20 children to school at a railway crossing at Auriya in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, killing eight of the students and injuring several more, a police officer said.
The bus driver appeared not to have heard a gateman's warning about the approaching Varanasi-Allahbad passenger train because he was wearing earphones at the time, district police chief Arvind Bhushan Pandey said.
“Though the gateman tried to alert the van driver about the train, the driver couldn't hear his warnings because he had

an earphone on,” Pandey said.
The minibus was thrown up in the air by the impact and landed in an agricultural field.
It was not immediately clear why the driver was wearing the earphones.
The driver and six children were also injured in the collision at the railway crossing, between Katka and Madhosingh railway stations, 275 km from Lucknow.
Kokila Baranwal, the manager of the school, Tender Hearts English School, could not immediately comment to the agency on the incident.
Although the crossing is unmanned, a gate ‘mitra’ or counsellor was present at the time. Indian Railways has deployed over 4,000 such gate mitras at unmanned level crossings identified as vulnerable.
As many as 40 per cent of India's train accidents happen at railway crossings each year, railway officials have said.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu expressed “profound grief” and announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of the deceased.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased and free treatment for the injured, District Magistrate Prakash Vindu said.

Three-year target set for the task could get extended due to dearth of locos and funds
MUMBAI/NEW DELHI, JULY 24:   Lack of funds and inability to build enough locomotives threaten to derail Indian Railways’ target to achieve full electrification of its network in the next three years.
The estimated cost of electrification of the remaining routes is ₹35,000 crore, according to the Railways.
In
...
addition, ₹60,000 crore will be needed to build locomotives and another ₹10,000 crore for setting up masts, overhead equipment, contact wires, substations and transformers, according to a railway official.
Raising funds for electrification at one go isn’t easy as the Railways is already cash strapped, limiting its borrowing capacity, said another official.
As on March 31, a total of 27,999 route km of the railway network was electrified. Full electrification would require covering another 35,000 km.
In terms of locomotives, the Railways effectively deployed 5,105 locomotives out of its total holding of 5,142. “An additional 5,000 locomotives will be required for complete electrification. For this, additional staff for locomotive and traction maintenance is required. Further, re-skilling and redeployment of diesel staff (mechanical department) to maintain electric locos is a big ask,” said a senior official of the electrical branch.
With Chittaranjan Locomotive Works producing its highest-ever (280 electric locos) in Fiscal Year 2016, it seems near impossible to produce the required number in three years. “In addition, more than half of the world’s railway systems run on standard gauge (1,435 mm width), so importing electric locos of broad gauge (1,676 mm) in such a large quantity would be tough,” the official said.
Power Ministry proposal A few months back, at a meeting between senior functionaries of the Power and Railway Ministries, the former proposed that one of its public sector undertakings could bear the cost of electrifying the remaining railway network in three years, in return for sharing the benefits accruing to the Railways from lower energy costs. The savings were estimated to be ₹12,500 crore, by the Power Ministry. This may not be enough, according to experts.
“While the financial rate of return may not fully justify the proposal, if the economic rate of return was considered, including lower pollution, the country should opt for electric traction on a long-term basis,” said an official. “Moreover, major trunk routes, barring a few, had already been electrified. Hence, savings on electrifying non-important routes would not be significant,” he added.
According to another expert: “Indian Railways is a good paymaster. So, all power producers want it to be their customer. With not enough offtake from power houses, the Power Ministry may want the Railways to be entirely electrified, as today, power is cheaper than diesel.
“However, one should base the decision on the total cost of procurement, taking into account the risks of depending on one kind of energy.”
The Railways is yet to respond to BusinessLine’s query on this issue.

Instead of taking up electrification of all the BG tracks (about 30000 RKMs) of IRlys and completing it in 3 years, it is better to prioritise the non electrified tracks and complete the job in 8-10 years by stepping up the rate of electrification from about 1500 RKMs/Yr to 3500-4000 RKms per year. If we take decision to step up the pace of electrification now, the commissioning at the enhanced rate shall happen after 2-3 years. With in this span there will be sufficient time to:
(1) step up capacity of CLW substantially on war footing
(2)
...
Retrain the diesel loco staff to electric loco
(3) Within 3 years, the Alstom Electric loco factory at Madhepura is expected to supply loco for DFC, the order placed to this factory can be enhanced or delivery preponed to meet our requirement. Construction of this factory can be speeded up. If DFC commissioning is delayed, then the loco meant for DFC will come to rescue for rest of IR. With the land acquisition problems going on it is most likely that the commissioning of DFCs will be delayed and loco meant for DFC can be used in the normal IRly tracks. All the orders for CLW has to be of WAP type locos as WAG one will be taken care of by the Alstom locos.
