Mumbai: Railway board officials will now inspect the Bandra Reclamation area for the bullet train terminus project as the state government is still not willing to hand over any portion of land for the project in BKC.
Railway board had asked for 0.9% of the land on the same plot of land where state government plans to build the International Services and Finance Centre.
A senior railway ministry official said, "Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had recommended Bandra Reclamation to railway minister Suresh Prabhu, who has asked officials to inspect the site."
Meanwhile,

MMRDA commissioner U P S Madan also apprised the Niti Aayog's vice chairman Arvind Panagariya about the state's inability to part with land in BKC. A source said, "Panagariya told the MMRDA chief that a decision will taken on this on the basis of a political consensus."
The state government has also suggested LTT as the alternative site with an assurance that it will help built all the infrastructure but railway is not keen on this site.
The railway ministry is keen on BKC as it already has good infrastructure in place. The ministry feels that both IFSC and bullet train terminus can coexist on the same plot. Railways had assured only bare minimum space will earmarked at entry and exit for vehicle pick and drop facility.
The underground station will ensure that the IFC building can also come up on the same plot. The 3-level station terminus will have platforms 25 meter below ground level.
All the ticketing offices, refreshment area will be located on the level 1 of the underground terminus. The plan also took into account proposed BKC metro station for Dahisar-Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd (Metro II) corridor.
The level two concourse area will be for the movement of people from bullet train to BKC Metro II station and vice-versa. Both, bullet train and IFCS are flagship projects and are being monitored by the prime minister's office.

Although the finances have been almost tied up, there are many hurdles in the path of Mum-Ahm bullet train project.
(1) Mum-Ahm Bullet train shall be having very high fares (higher or equal to the plane fares), it will get good patronage only if it facilitates best convenience to its passengers by offering a well-connected and suitably located boarding points (Rly station).
(2) It will be used by Company officials & Rich persons only as fares are likely to be very high, it be out of reach of majority of middle/low income
...
public. the only practical option can be either south Mumbai (Nariman point area) or BKC (centrally located, well established and still growing).
(3) There will be stiff competition from airlines, and in order to wean away the passengers from airlines, bullet trains have to offer rly station at much more convenient location than the airport. Station at LTT, even after improvement of connecting roads, will go very much against bullet train and go in favor of airlines & expressways/roadways. Bullet train project is one of the costliest, most high-tech and high profile project of not only Mumbai but of India, it deserves the best and the poshest location for its terminal. In fact Bullet Train shall be one of the brightest feather in the cap of the proposed IFC at BKC and add to its utility.
We had been hearing a lot about IFC in Mumbai since decades which has not happened primarily because of inadequate political clout/leverage of Maharashtra at Center. Other cities like Delhi has rose a lot in the matter of developing infrastructure & gaining financial weightage during last 2 decades as compared to Mumbai. Since, the Central Govt is most conducive for Mumbai/Mahatrashtra today than the earlier times, it is best time for IFC to come through and Maha Govt should not miss the opportunity, lest other cities with growing financial might and having more political clout seize the opportunity. It may be possible to make up for the small area lost Bullet train station by adjustment in other plans or little bit of adjustment with permitted FSI.

Varanasi: The Government Railway Police (GRP) on Monday claimed to have arrested two West Bengal-based drug smugglers from Mughalsarai railway station and seized 1.5 kg brown sugar worth Rs 3 crore from their possession. According to GRP, the arrested men have divulged details of their vast network.
On June 23, the Mughalsarai GRP had arrested a smuggler and seized several kilogrammes for opium from him. The recoveries have proved once again that the Howrah-Delhi route of the railways has emerged as the "new silk route for drug smuggling", the GRP said.

is not only being used by the West Bengal and North East drug smugglers to flood this part of east UP with ganja, heroin, brown sugar, opium and other intoxicants, but also to supply it to north and western parts of the country, the GRP added.
GRP inspector, Mughalsarai, Tripurari Pandey, said: "While carrying out regular checking, the GRP personnel noticed two youths at platform no. 7 of Mughalsarai railway station. When challenged, they tried to escape but were caught near the western cabin of the station. When their bags were checked, brown sugar packed in polythene packets was found."
Pandey said the arrested drugs carriers were identified as Mohd Noor Salim Momin and Mohd Ejajul of Malda district in West Bengal. During interrogation, they divulged that one Firoz and his accomplice Mati Sheikh of Kalichak used to give them heroin and brown sugar after procuring consignments from bordering areas of Bangladesh. The drugs were to be supplied to retail syndicates in Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab and other western states.
Before Monday's recovery, the Mughalsarai GRP on June 23 had caught a drug carrier, Mohd Barkat Sheikh, of Khasranpur in Kaliachak of Malda and recovered eight kilograms of opium worth Rs 1.60 crore. Barkat was taking the consignment to Delhi and Ajmer for delivery after procuring it from Mohd Asbabul and Salim Sheikh of Kalichak.
"Most of the drug carriers caught at Mughalsarai station have confessed that kingpins of Kalichak (Malda)-based drug smuggling gangs are getting heroin, opium, brown sugar and other drugs from gangs based in Bangladesh. Apart from Barkat, the drug carriers arrested on Monday confessed to have delivered many drug consignments in Rajsthan, Delhi, Punjab and other western states," Pandey added.
The Mughalsarai GRP had made huge recoveries of heroin and opium since January. In January, Pandey's team had seized 1.50 kg of heroin, after which 69 kg of opium had been recovered in six other cases. For Monday's achievement, ADG (Rail) G L Meena announced a cash reward of Rs 20,000 for the Mughalsarai GRP.
