Feb 13 2017 (21:46)   My Story: This Is How Caterers Are Scamming Passengers Travelling In Indian Railway

DhnEcr~   29 news posts
Entry# 2163399   News Entry# 293805         Tags   Past Edits
All of us use catering services while travelling in a train. Almost every time we pay the caterers the amount they ask, without actually enquiring about the prices. The Logical Indian has been trying to create awareness on this issue and how we can avoid getting cheated. Protapta Das shares his experience on his timeline.
“Last week I was travelling from Visakhapatnam to Howrah in Yesvantpur-Howrah Express. Ordered Veg. meal from the pantry car, as per waiter it was Rs.90/- only. I always have in mind that these people are charging very high for the meals but never took it seriously. But this time I determined to inquire about it. Googled about the rate card and menu, found this website, IRCTC Help:
IRCTC Latest Food Menu Rates. I was shocked when I saw the prices –
Veg meals which pantry car person was selling at Rs 90 was priced only Rs 50/-
Non-Veg Meals pantry car rate was priced Rs 100 is only Rs 55/-
Two more options are also available as Standard Thali Meals- Veg and Non-Veg atRs 35 and Rs 40.
After meals, I handed over Rs 50 to the waiter, but he was demanding Rs 90. I asked him about the RATE CARD; he refused to have any such thing. Shown him the above website and rates, he was told that Rs. 50 will be ok, but DON’T TELL ANYONE. I was so furious, travelled all the way from 13th coach to 1st coach to the pantry car.
And on my way, informed co-passengers who were taking the meals from pantry about this scam. Met the Pantry-In-charge. Enquired about this. He was also telling the same story, rate cards are missing right now but will shortly get the new one. About the jacked price of the meal, he was mum. Lodged a complaint in his Complaint register, which he handed over to me after half an hour.
Initially, he was pleading not to write the complaint but after writing the complaint, he was like nobody will see this, it will go into dustbin that’s it. To my surprise, against my complaint (he is obliged to give reason in writing – triplet complaint copies – one has to handed over to customer) he wrote “taken only Rs 50 from customer Bill No XXX and this customer writes complaint every time he travels. The same situation is in almost every train, pantry car meals price are jacked up as no one questions them, no one asks about the rate card.
As per one of the estimate, every day around 25 million passenger travel from Indian Railways, if only 0.5% of these passengers takes either lunch or dinner from pantry cars, extra Rs 30 on each meal will make these people rich by Rs 3,75,00,000 each day.
Please do insist for bill every time you order food from a Railway pantry car.”

You can read about the prices here: Revised Tariff for tea, coffee, breakfast and standard meals. Download the pdf file and take it whenever you are travelling. To have the idea of what actual prices are, here we are attaching the menu.

Train was running 8 hours late and was stopped for every crossing.
Arrived at Kacheguda @16.00.
Thank god i have got my berth reserved or else I don't know what would've happened to me.
Reached yesvantpur in early morning. I have planned my journey so that I can reach by night reach my hotel have a good night sleep and go to hospital in
the morning. But had no option other than running to the hospital without proper sleep (I took a nap in the train).
Totally unpredictable and unreliable especially in winter's. Co- Passenger's (a family with 2 small kids)were complaining about being stopped for so many crossings that why the train got more delayed. Everyone who were travelling from long distances completely exhausted and bathroom's were stinking like hell.

I know there is some reporting system but I don't know the exact procedure and process. Please reply with the details will save them for my upcoming journeys.
I was sleep deprived from a couple of days before my journey and even I was about to run out of my net balance and I had to save some for booking a cab after reaching yesvantpur.
They stopped this train for so many crossings (including for few sub-urban trains). Felt that as if I'm going in a passenger train (Diesel loco's contribute to this
thought) rather than a Super Fast train.

All 6 rakes of KK exp and SBC-MAS-SBC Mail comprise of coaches manufactured in the last 3-4 years and 98% of reserved coaches (SL,3AC,2AC,1AC) have charging points in each bay as a result. Even the older ones are POHed ones and they too have charging points in each bay. Only around 2 or 3 coaches among the 114 (19*6 rakes) do not have charging points so go ahead and test your luck :)
P.S: SWR does shuffle coaches here and there sometimes and the replacement ones too are newer ones having charging points in each bay.

In today’s edition, Bangalore Mirror brings to you the second part of its series — the suburban rail service that connects two major worlds. One, new and upwardly mobile, and the other, as old as the very soil itself. A ride between City station and tech hub Whitefield is, metaphorically, a journey from crowds to crowd-sourcing
A solution that saves time, money
When a city is connected by local railway, travelling becomes much more easy and quicker. On a certain occasion, when the city was going through a bus strike, I had to
travel to Hosur from Hebbal and since there were no buses available, I had to avail of the local train. It was on that day that I realized how feasible it is to travel around the city by local trains.
Since buses are an integral part of Bengaluru, most people like me miss out on the advantages of travelling by local trains, and only during crisis do they realize that one can travel to most parts of the city by local trains.
It is only in Bengaluru that suburban railway has seven directions and that is a great thing for a city to possess. If you are well versed with the timings of the local trains, you will not have any problems travelling to most parts of the city. What makes it beautiful is that in Karnataka, the local train travels through lush greenery, unlike Mumbai where you get to see construction sites everywhere.
A distance that requires three hours to reach can be reached in 45 minutes if you are travelling in local trains. Since there are two sides to every story, there are things
that make local railway problematic as well.
The thing that bothers me the most is the punctuality of the trains. There is no fixed time for a train to arrive and hence that creates a problem.
Spare the roads, and oil the tracks
In order to avoid the heavy traffic that Bengaluru is famous for, travel by local train. I have always been a supporter of suburban railway because that is the only way we can travel across the city in a very less time. One of the very effective solutions to the problem would be local trains. The outer ring road that has the most number of cars blocking each other will see 50 per cent less traffic if we begin commuting by local trains.
I don’t understand why people do not use them for their daily travels because when you can reach a location in 40 minutes, why would you want to take the roads and waste hours reaching the same spot. As we can clearly understand that travelling becomes easy when we avail of local trains, it also goes unnoticed that it creates lesser traffic congestions, faster connectivity, all at a lower cost.
What the public want these days is point-to-point connectivity, which is not possible when you are availing of public transport. I will always be ready to walk that extra mile to either take a metro or a train if that reduces both travel time as well as cost. With proper planning by the government, the bottlenecks can be reduced in no time.
One more aspect everybody misses out on is that avoiding cars and availing of local trains will reduce fuel consumption. That is national savings. We can save dollars for our country if we are saving petrol.

there is heavy rail traffic in the Bangalore city limits at morning hours as long distance trains come early in the morning due to which the MEMU gets delayed but my suggestion is let SWR rail controller give more priority to local MEMUs than expresses/passenger trains from other places.

I think it has a great advantage when it comes to travelling to places like Whiitefield and KR Puram. Getting stuck in traffic is really a pain especially if you are driving yourself. It will be very convenient if we have local trains running in full flow. At a time when the city is rapidly growing, I think local trains are time-driven and I personally would choose it over any other mode of transport unless I’m travelling with family.
Sathya Sankaran
Founder of Praja Raag
Local trains are very important as they comes under heavy rail. The advantage of heavy rail is that it can carry more people. Laying a surface for a local train is cheaper compared to any other mode of transport. There are a lot of suburban places near railway tracks and that makes it easier to connect to old towns in and around Bengaluru.
Mohammed Tauheed ur Rahman
Marketing executive
Local trains are less time-consuming. It is really useful when you have to reach somewhere in less time. Taking the roads on weekdays becomes such a hectic task that it really helps if you have a proper working local railway. I travel once a week to Mysuru and I think local trains make it really easy. The only concern as of now is the frequency of trains in the evenings.
Sujith Deshpande
Volunteer for CfB
The first and biggest advantage of local trains is that it reduces travel time. Then, you need not cut trees and and cause an environmental hazard if you increase the number of trains. The advantage it has over every other mode of transport is that it is very cheap. You can travel to your destination in 10 or 15 rupees.
Nivedita BR
I think local trains would help commuters in more ways than one. Given the current condition of traffic of Bengaluru, local trains would help save a lot of time for commuters. If the local train connectivity could be increased, it would probably be the most used mode of transport.

Even 500BC,500N go towards banashankari and even plenty of private bus operators operate bus up to banashankari but I don't recommend using the private buses as they put very loud music which is very disturbing and use the private bus as last option if there are no BMTC buses available.

For going to majestic it is better to buy an unreserved ticket and board a MEMU/passenger or an UR coach of express train as it is very cheap and faster option.
