Over 3,000 trains cancelled; 50,000 ticket refunds every day; Rs 1,200 revenue lost; and it's not over yet
Itarsi fire cripples country's train network
Officials say over 3,000 trains cancelled; massive repair

operation launched; loss estimated at Rs 1,200 cr
A fire in the control centre of the pivotal Itarsi Railway Junction in UP has caused one of the largest and lengthiest train disruptions in over a decade, with more than 70 trains being cancelled each day for the last 22 days; over 3,000 in all, resulting in 50,000 ticket refunds a day. And given the extent of damage to the Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) panel the nerve centre of a station that routes all major rail traffic between the four cardinal directions railway officials estimate that services will be restored only by July 23.Monetary loss caused by the dysfunctional system is in the region of Rs 1,200 crore, sources in the railways said.
At least 900 trains originating from and headed for Mumbai have been cancelled since the fire broke out.
A fire that broke out at 5.45 am on June 17 destroyed the central cabin of the route relay interlocking system at Itarsi in Madhya Pradesh, resulting in a cascading effect on the country's entire rail network, slowing down train movement, and forcing operators to resort to manual signalling methods, including flags and “authority to proceed“ chits handed to drivers approaching switching points.
“The electronic dashboard controls train movement over significant sections. The entire panel, connected with the signal points and track turnouts, has been gutted. It is a huge system with thousands of cables and circuits and railway engineers have to completely set up a new system. It is taking time because of the complexity of the job,“ a senior railways official said. “It's critical to understand that it is very dangerous to allow the same volume of train movement without the RRI system in place.“ Itarsi Junction normally handles 300 trains a day. The burned down panel has whittled that number down to a third of that number.
According to railway employees, the RRI cabin was ill-maintained and did not house a smoke detector. “This disaster could have been averted,“ an official told Mumbai Mirror. No offi cial explanation was forthcoming.
The task at hand is daunting. In all, close to 120 km of cables must be replaced; over 300 km of jumper cables installed; 3 lakh segments to be soldered and joined with precision; and each one of the 900 relays in the control room must be set right. “We have deployed more than 950 engineers and over 50 officers to work on the site day and night,“ Piyush Mathur, chief spokesperson, West Central Railway, said.
THE CONTROL PANEL THAT CRASHED
Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) is the dashboard used in large and busy stations that are required to handle high volumes of train movements.
The RRI controls the entire route traced by a train as it passes through a station. All associated points and signals along the track can be set at once by a switch for receiving, holding, blocking, or dispatching trains.
The system mirrors the actual geographical layout of signal switches and push buttons. All that an operator is required to do to effect a switch in the route is determine where a train is and to which line it must be shifted. The RRI takes care of the rest.
When a route is set and locked, the route is illuminated by white strip lights in the track circuit configurations throughout the route (except the overlap).
Itarsi's RRI central cabin controls hundreds of points and signals. It pilots traffic moving in the direction of Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Patna, Mumbai, Nagpur, Allahabad and Jabalpur.
When Itarsi's system burned down on June 17, it was akin to an Air Traffic Control tower losing its flight sequencing system; train operators had to resort to antiquated manual signalling techniques.

New Delhi: Ministry of Railways has started yet another passenger friendly measure on pilot basis, under which SMS messages would be sent to passengers informing about train cancellation in case the train in which they have booked their tickets for is cancelled due to unavoidable circumstances. Under this pilot project,...

the SMS messages are being sent to those passengers who are boarding at originating station. At a later stage, this will be extended to cover enroute station also. This exclusive SMS based service has been commenced on all India basis.
The SMS will be sent to their respective mobile numbers entered by them in reservation slips while buying tickets from PRS counters or while purchasing online e-tickets. The cancellation information would be sent quite in advance to the passengers for their convenience so that it may help them plan alternative arrangement in time. To avail this facility, passengers are advised to invariably mention their mobile numbers on the reservation slips.
The software for this service has been developed by Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the information technology (IT) arm of the Indian Railways.

Part 2 .
02111 arrived 15 mins late on platform no. 7 at thane stn. after 2 mins halt its start moving. in my compartment was accupied with elderly couple. it reaches kyn at 3.25 maintaining the delay of 15 mins. Meanwhile i settled on upper berth. since all the couple were of old age. one thing i would to remind you that sitting on upper berth in LHB coaches is very difficlt and very much painful for neck. something needs to be done to make it comfortable. meanwhile train reaches nsk half hr late and BSL by 1.25 mins late. As i would be returing by same train there was no issue in delay. After having dinner and listening music i slept by 12 am in midnite. No worry about any stn, any halt i slept peacfully.... since i

Little wonder that I decided to go closer to the track, a little ahead of my complex, for a closer better look, which ultimately proved to be too close for my comfort and ended as up with a narrow escape from danger
Fortunately I could not understand a word of what they were trying to achieve or the meaning of the abuses
AN ATTEMPTED RAILFANNING THAT WENT HORRIBLY ASTRAY
The Bangalore - Mumbai railway line goes alongside my apartment complex at Hoysalanagar just past the nondescript Chennasandra Stn. I get an elevated view of the track from my flat but not good enough to satiate my desires as a railfan. Little wonder that I decided to go closer to the track, a little ahead of my complex, for a better look, which ultimately proved to be too close for my comfort and ended up with a narrow escape from danger.
It was around 7.30 last evening and I tried to find a way to get as near as possible to the railway track in order to have a glimpse of the majestic NDLS-bound Karnataka Express. To reach the vantage point I had to negotiate

on foot a kuccha road leading from the 4th or 5th Main of T.C.Palya Main Road, Ramamurthy Nagar to a mound overlooking the rail line. Between the road and the track was a slum which I had to cross to reach my destination.
Just as I crossed the narrow path that led to the slum, I was in for a rude shock. I was accosted by 3 young toughs one of whom placed his hand on my shoulder in a vice-like grip and another caught hold of my left hand. The third fella was facing me and launched a torrent of abuse in Kannada. Suddenly he snatched my mobile which was in my right hand. After I could recover from the initial shock, I asked in Hindi " Yeh, kya ho raha hai ? ". My question was greeted with another barrage of abuse. Fortunately I could not understand what they were trying to achieve or the meaning of the abuses. After some time I gently said " Kannada gothilla ", the only 2 words I know in the local language. The abusive one in the group asked me what language I knew and I said English and Tamil. He then went on to state in Tamil that 2 of the water tankers, quite of a few which were parked in the open area adjoining the slum, were missing and feared to have been stolen. And that I was considered a PRIME SUSPECT, having been caught loitering near the parking lot. They said that I would not be allowed to leave the place till the police arrived and took me into custody. And only then would my mobile be handed over to me. They asked me what was my purpose in entering that area. My attempts to explain to them that I was trying to approach the track for the purpose of railfanning (Well I didn't use that word) cut no ice. In fact it only made matters worse and one of them asked in Tamil, WHAT WAS THE NEED TO COME ALL THE WAY THERE JUST TO SEE A TRAIN GO BY. However, with the passage of time and the lack of much reaction/response from my side, better sense prevailed among the group which had then increased to about 10 members.
By now , I felt mildly amused and realized that it was a case of mistaken identity. 7 or 8 minutes had passed by then and I started telling them in Tamil, that I felt sorry for their loss but was in no way responsible for what had happened. I asked them to accompany me to my flat where the security personnel would confirm my identity as a retired Bank Officer. They then asked me details about where I lived and finally after 10 mns let me go free with a strict warning not to come anywhere near their slum, whether for railfanning or otherwise.
At the end of the episode I am not too sure whether I was more relieved or amused. It was a probably a mixture of both :)

Almost every type of loco can be seen here also i have not seen a very big yard here , so yes I i know it's a major junction but i don't think it makes any sense to provide ET with so many locos with most of them resting all time
Does anybody find ET a such a big station to have so many locos allocated??
