The Bengaluru–Hassan new railway line, construction of which was completed in January, would be opened for passenger traffic likely on March 26.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda are expected to inaugurate the new line by flagging off Yeshwantpur–Hassan Inter-City Express from Yeshwantpur station.

Diversion is not at all possible. SWR is happy to serve other zone destinations. Why no other zone train runs into SWR territory to connect Hassan/ Hubli/ Ballari/ shimoga/ Bijapur etc. Can SWR make efforts to develop Hassan/ shimoga as starting point for SR train? Ballari / Hospet for a SCR train? SMET/ DVG for a CR train?

The Central government’s decision to waive service charges on booking of railway tickets online is likely to severely impact the revenues of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and it may force the government to derail its plans for listing it on the stock market.
The government waived the service charges on online bookings following demonetisation to encourage cashless transactions. However, more than 40 per cent of the revenues generated by IRCTC comes from booking tickets from its website where it charges a nominal fee.

Rs.1,500 crore, of which around Rs.550 crore came from ticket booking. IRCTC used to charge Rs.40 per ticket for bookings in air-conditioned classes and Rs.20 per ticket in sleeper class. Moreover, the commission IRCTC makes from ticket booking cross-subsidises its loss-making ventures such as catering services. IRCTC shares half of this service charge revenue with the railways.
The Railway Ministry has already written to the Finance Ministry seeking reimbursement of the loss amounting to over Rs.500 crore on an annualised basis.
Although the government is in the process of its listing, the concerns of its revenue stream is a major hindrance for future cash flows pointed out by various stock market analysts. The other segments such as licence catering, Rail Neer (packaged drinking water) and tourism generates very thin margins.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley during his budget speech had said railways will offer competitive ticket booking facility to the public at large. The government will list shares of railway public sector enterprises such as IRCTC, Indian Railway Finance Corporation and Ircon International.

Recently, the Belagavi station got free wifi-connectivity. There was need to increase the length and width of the platforms or add more platforms, besides providing better rest rooms and waiting rooms, canteens at the station, he said.
The railway Ministry had already upgraded the railway station at Hubballi (which also falls in ‘B’ category cities) into a high-tech station. Similarly, the Belagavi station needed to be upgraded.
Also, he requested the minister to accord early approval to the estimates prepared for the construction of Railway Over Bridge across the Third Railway Gate (Level Crossing No.381) in Tilakwadi in Belagavi city.

BENGALURU: The South Western Railway (SWR) on Saturday said that Train No.22693/22694 KSR Bengaluru-H Nizamuddin-KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Tri-Weekly Express will run as Train No. 22691/22692 KSR Bengaluru-H Nizamuddin-KSR Bengaluru Rajdhani Express in a diverted route with effect from July 1 from KSR Bengaluru and from July 2 from H. Nizamuddin.

congestion at city and Mysuru railway stations will, however, limit the benefits of the second line. Bengaluru Divisional Railway Manager Sanjiv Agarwal told DH they have already exploited the full potential of the second line.
“The pending work near Tipu’s armoury was not a huge bottleneck. Over the last four years, we have reduced travel time of 12 trains on that route by nearly 30 minutes. After the completion of doubling, we can save a maximum of 10 minutes. We need to decongest the KSR-City Railway Station in Bengaluru to move trains fast,” he said.
Many trains from Mysuru, except Shatabdi, are usually made to wait at Kengeri or Jnanabharati stations for 30 minutes, which goes up to nearly an hour for passenger trains.
The Mysuru station, too, is working to full capacity. The upcoming terminal at Kadakola, to be built at a cost of Rs 65 crore, is expected to ease the situation.
As many as 18 trains run between Bengaluru and Mysuru daily, including weekly and bi-weekly ones. In addition, there are DEMU and MEMU trains that run on the same route, except on Sunday.
The KSR station, with 10 platforms, handles more than 130 trains every day and the number crosses 145 on some days on account of weekly, biweekly and other trains. “There is a crisis due to lack of a shunting yard. The Baiyappanahalli coaching terminal, which we want to build in two years, will solve this problem,” the divisional railway manager (DRM) said.
The Railways swapped land with BBMP to get 3.3 acres near Binny Mills, where it planned to establish pit lines to park the idling trains to free the lines in the KSR station. When asked about this, the DRM said the project was technically not feasible. “We can’t establish pit lines in the area. Instead, we have decided to focus on Baiyappanahalli terminal,” he said.
Sources said the average speed of trains can be increased from 65-85 kmph to 90 kmph, if they can get a shunting yard. At present, only Shatabdi Express runs at a speed of 90-100 kmph. “Once the terminal is ready, trains do not have to wait for signals outside Bengaluru. This will cut 30 minutes of travel time,” the source added.

To be honest, CMNR does not need so many trains. SBC was to be decongested, so trains like Basava, GG, hampi and many other trains were pushed to MYS. Now, to decongest MYS, push all trains to CMNR!!.
MYS divn should have one more full fledged terminal, and it has to be at suitable location - like Hassan, or SMET or even ASK. MYS SBC section needs hourly ICE trains and not ornamental trains.

The demand for a faster train journey between Bengaluru and Mangaluru will soon be realised with the South Western Railway (SWR) proposing to run Kudla Express, the soon-to-be-launched day train, on the newly laid Bengaluru-Hassan line.

The service was announced as a daily via Mysuru by former Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda. Following a public interest writ petition by the Udupi Railway Yatri Sangha before the Karnataka High Court, the SWR had promised to start the service by March 31.
The SWR has also proposed to make Mangaluru Junction the termination point of the Yeshwantpur-Karwar-Yeshwantpur tri-weekly (16515/516), given the low patronage between Mangaluru and Karwar. The Yeshwantpur-Karwar service leaves Yeshwantpur at 7 a.m. and reaches Mangaluru Junction at 5.40 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while the Karwar-Yeshwantpur service leaves Mangaluru Junction at 11.10 a.m. and reaches Yeshwantpur via Arsikere at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Thus, passengers would get a day train facility on six days a week, SWR’s proposal says.
Kukke Shree Subrahmanya-Mangalore Railway Commuters’ Forum organiser Sudarshan Puttur thanked MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and the SWR for considering the forum’s suggestion to route Kudla Express via the newly opened line.
Bengaluru-Hassan services
The zone has also proposed to run an intercity express and a DEMU (diesel electric multiple unit) passenger between Hassan and Yeshwantpur.
The Hassan-Yeshwantpur Intercity will leave Hassan at 6.15 a.m. and reach Yeshwantpur at 9 a.m. In the return journey, the train will leave Yeshwantpur at 6.15 p.m. and reach Hassan at 9 p.m.
The express trains will halt at Chikkabanawara, Nelamangala, Kunigal, Yediyur, BG Nagar, Shravanabelagola and Channarayapatna.
The DEMU passenger service will leave Yeshwantpur at 7.30 a.m. and reach Hassan at 10.30 a.m. The Hassan-Yeshwantpur DEMU will leave Hassan at noon and reach Yeshwantpur at 3.30 p.m., halting at all stations en route.

However, the Bengaluru division of the South Western Railways (SWR) says there are ways to start replacing 27 existing suburban trains and build the coaching terminal/maintenance shed for suburban trains in Banaswadi. Sanjiv Kumar Agarwal, division railway manager (DRM) of Bengaluru said: "In the MoU it was decided that a committee comprising all stakeholders will be formed. The committee will have powers to initiate some of the basic works required to take up the project before the formation of the company."
Accordingly, he said, works like procurement of the 27 mainline electric multiple units (MEMU) rakes to replace the old diesel-run engines can be initiated. "We had already requested Rs 360 crore in funds to replace old rakes. And with the allocation, 27 rakes will be replaced. We will decide on floating the tender to procure these sets of trains, once the fund is deposited in the Railways' account," Agarwal added.
PROBLEM POINT
However, one crucial bottleneck to the project is yet to be resolved. The draft policy on suburban rail suggests that the Centre and state pay 20% each and the rest be loans with the state as the guarantor. The Siddaramaiah government, however, has suggested that the funding pattern be 50:50. The two stakeholders are yet to resolve this issue.

Express THE MUCH-TOUTED Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) engine service between Pune and Daund is yet to see the light of the day, despite availability of infrastructure and successful trial runs conducted by Pune Division.
The service, which is expected to bring relief to those travelling between Pune and Daund everyday, is awaiting a green signal from the Railway Board. Watch What Else Is Making News After being in the pipeline for half a decade, the work on electrification of the Pune-Daund section was completed in November 2016. A total sum of Rs 167 crore was spent on the project. Officials said a nod from the ministry is also needed to finish smaller projects at the stations on these routes, such as foot-over bridges, increasing the height of platforms.

KOLHAPUR: Citizens, elected representatives and railway activists here have demanded a new train from Kolhapur to Shirdi and increase in the frequency of Kolhapur-Ahmedabad and Kolhapur-Delhi trains.
