USEFUL INFORMATION * Lower berth quota(SS quota) is allotted only to the single lady passenger of age 45 and above travelling alone or senior citizen passenger travelling alone. So, more than 1 ticket cannot be booked AT A TIME in LOWER BERTH QUOTA, even if all the passengers are severally and jointly eligible for the same. click here says: Exclusive Accommodation for Ladies, Sr. Citizen and Pregnant Women i.An accommodation of six berths in sleeper class of all the trains is earmarked for exclusive use of lady passengers. ii.In addition to this a combined quota of 2 lower berths is earmarked in sleeper class, AC 3-Tier and AC 2-Tier classes for Sr. Citizens, Female passengers 45 years of age and... more... Senior Citizen is just a concession applicable to male (60+)(40%) and female (58+)(50%). They can either travel single or in groups. If they travel single, system would automatically place them in vacant LB Quota; i.e. they would be eligible for both LB+Concession at the same time. Else they would be placed in GNWL (When LB Quota runs full). If any LB gets cancelled in the meantime, then it wont be released. The vacant quota will be released only during charting. If there are two SRCTZN traveling together then, the PRS automatically allots general quota. The SRCTZN must travel alone to avail this quota. Personal experience. My parents had to travel urgently from NDLS to BLS due to death of a relative. They tried to booked a 3A ticket in BBS Raj and got WL/24 and 25. However, the counter clerk suggested my father to fill separate forms for him and my mother. And then he issued confirmed tickets. Only issue, one seat was B1-12 and the other B8-57. So, they had to travel separately throughout the journey... Few lower berth are marked to be allocated only to senior citizens or Females above 45 years when travelling alone, From Idianrail.gov.in: [$] Lower berth Quota A Lower berth Quota has to be provided in AC and Sleeper classes for senior citizen and women above the age of 45, travelling alone To add: There should be only 1 person per PNR. For lower berth quota the person must be travelling alone Yes Harshal, the rule is 1 person per PNR or travelling alone as they say. The ruls is strange according to me. If it is all SS, then it should give from SS quota. Interesting to think that when a person applies for LB, wud he get the senior citizen concession? Exactly what is the difference between SS and LB? A small difference, Senior citizen discount in monetary terms is as per demand, when you specifically mark for that, but senior citizen quota (Lower berth quota) is applied irrespective of if you have asked for money discount on ticket or not, Lower berth quota is allocated just based on your age(60+ males of 45+ females) and if travelling alone. Usually in 1AC, besides getting the concession in fares, they are also provided guaranteed Lower berths in most of the cases. True, because in case of 1A berth allocation is done at charting and also 1A have 50% berths as lower berths, where as in case of 2A it is 33% and 3A / SL it is 25% only. why the same procedure may not be followed for all classes to allot the berth depending upon the age at the time of chart preparation. That is feasible if you do the berth allocation logic for whole class like 2A at the time of charting only, else only keeping Lower berth to be allocated at time of charting will cause to much fragmentation in people's itinerary. Means if you have 4 seats, then 2 each in different bays (upper berths). ## Additionally if all berths were allocated at the time of charting only for lower classes, then there will be to heavy crowd at chart display location to search for berths and will most probably be unmanageable. Suppose, there is a group booking for an entire 2AC Coach, and all of them gets cancelled in the due course. For all the WL'ed pax, berths wud be thus allotted at the time of charting. This would again create a confusion cz system would first try to allot to those eligible. Just a small correction (in fact two): 1. A group booking for whole 2A coach getting cancelled is a rare phenomenon and doesn't happen every day in every train , so people rushing to charts in this case is not unmanageable. 2. Irrespective of number of cancellation there is always a maximum count till which point WL can grow for a class and Quota, so at the time of charting only that many people(max count defined for WL) will rush to verify the charts. Just forgot to reply your one point. "This would again create a confusion cz system would first try to allot to those eligible." # Well allocation in SS Quota (Lower berth Quota) is a guaranteed phenomenon at the time of booking if there are any berths of SS Quota left. At the time of charting, what PRS berth allocation logic does is, it tries... more... Sir, I just made a factual assumption of what can happen. It was never practical! That is correct. There is no such guarentee for WL'ed pax gettin confirmed. However, journey leg also matters a lot. If a confirmed pax having berth booked from A-C has canelled his ticket, then the system would try to allot the berth to the WL'ed pax having the same journey stretch from A-C. Even if a pax at WL1 has booked the ticket from A-B or A-D. However this is a very minimal issue.
