I travelled by Rajdhani on 24th December 09 with my family. The train was inordinately delayed by 6 hours. It left Chennai only at 12.10 pm and reached Agra only at 4.45 pm - a further delay of 2 hours. The telengana bandh had no doubt affected the running of trains passing through its region but a stand by train could have been kept and the train could have departed at 6.10 am the scheduled time. The food served though not bad was not served as per the menu card given right through the journey. The only excuse given was the standard "train is late". There is only an official announcement before the train departs and after that no soft music is played. Hand towels were in short supply and therefore not supplied. The train looked dirty. Many passengers would have missed their deadlines like catching a connecting train or plane etc. A prestigious train arriving and departing late is very unfortunate, especially Rajdhani. Hope Railways will look into this and take corrective steps.

Sir
It seems you have taken these points from some other place which are an ad for the LHB coach.
Many points in your are not found in the coach- like integrated lamps in all seats - i am sorry rajdhani has no integrated lamps in any of the 3a seats. it may be in 2a. that was always available in older coaches also.
comfortable seats ,,... infinitely adjustable back rests? in which class? CC?
Windows of big size may be helps who wishes to see outside, but in some coaches there are cracks in the glass which have not been rectified.
Agreed on functional toilets - better dispensed than others.
There are many technical points which I am not aware of - so no comments on them. Other bloggers may comment if they are aware.
There are differences between an old 3ac coach and lhb in some matters, but it does not mean that the old coaches are bad. They can also be improved with the same fixtures.
More discussions welcome. thanks

I travelled in the train on 12-7-2009. The catering service is very bad. They gave only 2 ltrs of water for a day and its highly insufficient. When asked for another bottle of water i was denied. Ite very bad attitude shown by the contracters of IRCTC. Authorities Pls take action.

Mumbai rajdhani is perhaps number one in the list.It is not clear why the same standard of food and cleanliness cannot be adopted in others. One suggestion is to keep a box under lock and key inside each compartment inviting opinions from passengers on various aspects like food, courtsey etc. and periodically take remedial measures where necessary. All the staff shd. have a badge with their names. This will keep the staff on their toes.

Two good changes have to be introduced to Chennai Rajdhani for the distribution of crowd of GT Express and Tamil Nadu Express:
1. Chennai Rajdhani departs at 6.10 a.m. which is inconvenient for
passengers from Chennai. I think, probably, because of its unearthly timings at Chennai, many people do not prefer it. Instead, they go for GT and Tamil Nadu Express trains. It should leave Chennai after 7 a.m.
2. Chennai Rajdhani should get LHB bogies.

Can anyone comment as to why this train is running late.. Am really worried about reaching Delhi on time on 8th June..

May 19 2009 (02:00PM)
Reply    Add Bookmark  Remove 0
worrying about your train reaching delhi on 8th june will increase your stress levels and will land you not in delhi but in some doctor's house. all trains have some margin of late arrival due to various factors. always have 2-3 hours margin. once we are inside a train, we can only wish that the train reaches in time. generally rajdhani trains are punctual or well within 30 min delay. dont worry.

you can tell your mother to wait at new delhi station itself, either in the platform or waiting room according to your convenience, till you reach there. Even if your train is late, ok. she'll relax and wait for you. Other alternative is to contact some relative and ask them to meet your mom.
Just relax.

When K.C.Jena was the Chairman of Railway Board who happens to be from Orissa has given preference to give LHB coaches to Bhubaneswar _Delhi Rajadhani in January ie just before retirement.Earlier Lalu has given LHB's to Patna bound Rajadhani in the month of Oct'2008.He has overlooked to provide to all south bound Rajadhani's and given to Bhubaneswar train. It is most unfortunate to note that Orissa takes away every thing overlooking others. Now there is a daily Rajadhani from Bhubaneswar to Delhi whereas as all south bound Rajadhani's are run either weekly or bi-weekly that is the way railways show partiality where there is huge demand and revenue.

and what about the fare??I hear that Rajdhani is losing out to low cost airlines.

Apr 16 2009 (02:14AM)
Reply    Add Bookmark  Remove 0
it will lose to Low cost airlines coz a 3A Rajdhani ticket is 2K and when booked a mth in advance during peak and anytime during off peak a ticket in a low cost airline is between 2.5K to 3K. So effectively u r paying arounnd Rs 500 to 1K more to save 26 hrs(more than a day) 28 hrs vs 2.5 hrs journey time.
All other things remain same
Travel Time to Source Station or Airport is arnd 1-2 hrs
Travel Time from Destination Station or Airport is arnd 1-2 hrs
Wait time( including late train or plane arrival) 1 - 4+ hrs, waiting at an airport lounge is better as compared to filthy stations/lack of quailty waiting rooms.
Railways score on 2 things
a. Not charged heavily if the plan is tentative and one needs to cancel tickets.
b. Tatkal travel is anyday about half of the ticket cost in any airline during peak season.

There are other factors in favour of trains.
1. 99% of train delays are Arrival delays, NOT departure delays. So, usually, when a train is late, you are in the cozy AC coach, sleeping, reading a book, etc. 99% of flight delays are Departure delays (after a plane takes off, it reaches exactly 2.5 hrs later, and there are no traffic problems in the sky). Because of this, flight delays result in waiting time in airports, which is definitely not comfortable.
2. After a 2.5 hr. flight from New Delhi to Chennai, I need 24 hour rest, because the seats are so cramped and uncomfortable. After getting off in the morning from a train, I am well-rested and ready to begin a fresh day.

Apr 25 2009 (03:28AM)
Reply    Add Bookmark  Remove 0
some other points in favour of trains:
1. you have to reach airport 1-2 hours before flight departure. Waiting in the security and check-in lines are excruciating. On the other hand, you can reach the station 5 minutes before train departure. No ticketing nonsense.
2. Travel time to airport is definitely not the same as travel time to a railway station, since stations are usually located in the middle of the city. Not only that, you will be charged very highly for travel to airport - all the auto/taxi drivers make a lot of money from airport passengers.
3. Vendors at airports give you bad quality tea/snacks at a minimum cost of Rs. 20, and the the cost goes as high as Rs. 100.
On the whole, take a train, relax, reflect, meditate, chat with co-passengers, have a small vacation. Rushing from Delhi - Mumbai - Chennai, your whole life will be over before you realize it.

Apr 25 2009 (03:34AM)
Reply    Add Bookmark  Remove 0
I do agree with you on point 1. But point 2 isn't accepted as it depends on the individual whether one is too tired after a 2-3 hr flight or fresh enough to do a day's work. I travel a lot as a part of my work and my routine is often - catch an early morning flight from BLR-DEL, attend a few meetings and catch an evening flight back to BLR (economy). I have never felt tired after this schedule which is pretty regular.

You are right but the food and catering facility in Rajdhani Express is excellent as compared to other trains. So most of the people try to travel by Rajdhani. Garib Rath does not have any pantry car so people have to pack up food from home or wait for its halts.

Why can't provide pure south indian from chennai to nzm and pure north indian i.e. roti dhaal sabji and rice. South indian Menu Idli/dosa sambhar chutney, pongal, vadai, uppuma for breakfast, lunch and dinner rice, sambhar, rasam, curry, papad and dahi with pickles.
the food now provided is neither liked by north indian nor by south indians, I have heard from the own cartering staff that they don't eat this non-sense food made of maida. they prepare separately for them like wheat roti dhal sabji
