Train has only one general coach, not two. Update this.
And train is running with SE1.

SE1 makes a big confusion. ES1 is for SBC-CAN Exp. Passengers confused and interchange between the two link trains. A regular seen everyday in the train.

Hi everyone, can anyone say what the train used to run and what and what their TTs were like when SBC-MAQ was Meter Gauge? Any trip reports / memories? There is surprisingly little info about this available on the Internet... Thanks!

From my understanding, except for a Daily and a bi weekly there isn't any rail connection between Banngalore and MAngalore, but I guess there would be a much larger demand. Coming to the point, SBC Kannur exp via mysore is taking the route as shown. whereas YPR - Karwar goes via tumkur, ariskere hassan.
But Why isn't there any train going through Kunigal and Shravanbelagola which is obviously the shortest path between the two major cities ? Does that line exist ? If it exists does it has anything to do with the HMRDC Agreement ?

I am not aware of any doubling plans for this route. I don't think there are any, as of now.

Every ghat section has it's own challenges. The Sakleshpur- Subrahmanya Road section on this route is called the Green route and has a a very steep ruling gradient of 1 in 50. Think of this as all the challenges of Konkan Railway + very steep gradients + Extreme danger of track washout due to landslides. You can have a look at the gallery in IRI or IRFCA, the tracks run right on the edge of the hill ( Almost like Ooty-Conoor toy train route) and it's very dangerous, especially for BG trains.
I have trekked along the railway track on this route several times ( Sakleshpur- Subrahmanya road Green route trek is very famous and a must-do for all enthusiasts in Bangalore) and what I observed is that the route is very dangerous. The tracks are almost always

on the edge of the hill just beside a deep valley and many of the bridges are right on the edge of the hill. We were even scared to step on the bridge afraid that the land below the bridge might give away.
And the main problem is the BG. With MG/NG trains the loading on the ground due to the tracks/trains is much lesser than BG and also they can take much sharper curves than BG. Because of this, they do not affect the land much. That's why during MG era more trains could be run on this route without any issues.
While these issues can be solved , it will involve a lot of irreparable damage to the environment there.
But while these concerns are there, SWR is still not making the optimum utilization of this route. Even with these constraints, they can do much better than what they are doing now.

Thanks for info,i had a plan to have a trip in this route, what could be the best time to visit.
Why is SWR not using this route to its max, what could be the constraints of SWR
SWR dont want to take risk in this section as you said this ghat section is different
Or The operation const is high for the SW and the revenue which they get on this track is not profitable.
If operating cost is high,i think SWR can run trains in this route with increased fare, people who are willing will travel,Nothing is better than something.

I certainly agree with the revenue part. One normal SF train and another offering normal 2S and gen classes. Compare this to the lucrative freight option they have anybody will choose the latter.
Given the reasons mentioned here SWR should be allowed to charge a 20-30% inflated distance tariff on the lines of KR and UMB-CDG.
My friend says the lowest class bus between Bangalore and Mangalore called Sariga or something with non push back seats charges close to 400 and takes 9 hrs.
The train takes 2 hrs more but charges only rs 300 in SL class which is any day better than the bus and 2S charges are rs 150 only. With these fares why will anyone run additional services?

I see 16518 starts from Kannur at 16:30 and reaches at 18:55 at MAQ and wait for 120 minutes to start from there. Why they start the train so early from CAN? It could start at 18:00 from CAN

There is a Mysore Dharwad leaving at 22:30 towards Krishnarajanagar. This wait might be to clear off the line.

North bound trains beyond MAJN will be crowded with very few GEN compartments. I dont think its practical to take two trains for a short distance like CAN-SBC
