The Golden Temple Mail (formerly known as The Frontier Mail) is a train which runs from Mumbai to Amritsar, India. Founded in 1928 as the Frontier Mail, the train service connected the then city of Bombay with Peshawar on British India's frontier with Afghanistan. However, the route was shortened upto Amritsar following the Partition of India.
The Frontier Mail made its debut on 1 September 1928. When it was first introduced, the train ran between Ballard Pier Mole Station, Mumbai and Peshawar. After closing down of Ballard Pier it started operating from Colaba, Mumbai and Peshawar, the latter of which is now situated in the western region of Pakistan. According to the officially recognized biography of Subhash Chandra Bose, the Indian revolutionary escaped from house-arrest in Calcutta to Bombay and from there to Peshawar by the Frontier Mail. The Frontier Mail also finds a place in romanticized biographies of film actor Prithviraj Kapoor who is believed to have traveled to Bombay from his hometown of Peshawar by the Frontier Mail in 1928 to act in films.
The Frontier Mail was the first air conditioned train in the Indian Peninsula, when it got an air-conditioned compartment in 1934.
The radio facility was provided for the first time in a running train.
