Mumbai: The deputy station manager of Grant Road station, Deepak Kumar, was suspended yesterday, not for stealing money from the tills, but for swapping notes. On the night of November 8, just hours after the prime minister’s announcement to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, the total collection from booking counters at Grant Road station, amounting to Rs 4.59 lakh, was deposited with Kumar after the counters closed. This amount included 1,585 notes of Rs 100 denomination and 230 notes of Rs 50 denomination.
As it was announced that the old 500 and 1,000-rupee notes would be accepted at railway booking counters for the next couple of days, the railways had to be prepared to face the rush of people looking
to buy tickets and get change for the now-defunct notes.
Hence, the chief booking supervisor of Grant Road station, Anil Udeshi had also specifically instructed Kumar to keep the lower-denomination notes ready for the next day’s transaction.
However, the next morning, when the station manager on duty checked the notes, he found only 35 100-rupee notes and 30 50-rupee notes. It later emerged that Kumar had pocketed the rest of the 100- and 50-rupee notes (worth Rs 1.65 lakh) and swapped them with Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, while keeping the total amount unchanged.
Mukul Jain, divisional railway manager of Mumbai Central Division of Western Railway confirmed the suspension of Kumar.
Faced with a barrage of people buying high-value tickets on long-distance trains, possibly with the intent to get a refund later in the new currency, the Railways quickly devised a new plan yesterday. It announced that cancellation of tickets booked from Passenger Reservation System counters between November 9 and 11, where the refund amount is over Rs 10,000, would not be given in cash, but only in cheque or ECS payment. Also, to face the shortage of cash in these three days, the railways stopped giving refund for cancellation of tickets in cash and instead issued ticket deposit receipts (TDR). Refund will be processed through filing of TDR only on surrendering the original ticket.

Lalach buri balay- Aaj phir charitarth ho gayee!!
For a handsomely paid IR employee, a small but wrong action done out of greed, backfires!!
Officials treating IR as their personal fiefdom are of late getting punished.
First one playing with the operation of a prestigious train (Rajdhani) and now playing with the IR currency note.
incidences/actions are a lesson to learn, that the time/IR is changing!

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
