Mumbai: The deputy station manager of Grant Road station, Deepak Kumar, was suspended yesterday, not for stealing money from the tills, but for swapping notes. On the night of November 8, just hours after the prime minister’s announcement to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, the total collection from booking counters at Grant Road station, amounting to Rs 4.59 lakh, was deposited with Kumar after the counters closed. This amount included 1,585 notes of Rs 100 denomination and 230 notes of Rs 50 denomination.
As it was announced that the old 500 and 1,000-rupee notes would be accepted at railway booking counters for the next couple of days, the railways had to be prepared to face the rush of people looking...
