Chennai: For over a year, regular passengers travelling out of Chennai to southern districts like Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Tirunelveli as well as Kerala on weekends have noticed that one Suvidha special train has always been made available by Southern Railway. The train, announced at least 15 days in advance, invariably has confirmed tickets available, which is a huge relief to these passengers.
This is not by providence. In the past year and a half, battling challenges of coach-shortfall and heavily choked lines, Southern Railway has mastered the art of planning and running a special train every Friday night on three sectors with massive demand: Chennai-Tirunelveli, Chennai-Trivandrum and Kochuveli-Guwahati. These trains start their return journeys on Sunday night, thereby catering to the demand
of weekend travellers who have migrated to Chennai in the past decade or so, mainly to fuel the IT sector and allied industries.
Suvidha trains, with their dynamic fare model, have been resisted by passengers in many sectors, but in the passenger-dense Tamil Nadu and Kerala where commuters are willing to shell out extra, these weekend special trains witness an occupancy of 85% on average. "Suvidha breaks even at 67% occupation, so we are able to get a neat profit on running these trains," a senior official said.
This not only helps Southern Railways earn precious revenue, but also caters to the burgeoning demand on these sectors. Many passenger associations on these routes have sought new trains, but Indian Railways has maintained a policy of not introducing them. "These specials come as a blessing in disguise. The waiting list on the regular trains reaches around 250 on weekends even outside the holiday season," the official said.
It is not as easy as it sounds. As reported by TOI earlier, the zone has a hand-to-mouth existence as far as availability of railway coaches is concerned. Initially, officials had to box together a rake by attaching any coach they could lay their hands on, sometimes using unclean and poorly maintained ones. However, now the Egmore-Tirunelveli Suvidha special has better quality German-made Linke Hoffman Busch (LHB) coaches.
Still, this isn't enough. The zone has sent a proposal for another special for the Kerala-Northeast sector, which caters to the huge influx of migrant labour population. "We have also requested for a Mangalore-Trivandrum and overnight Bengaluru-Coimbatore train," the official said.

Our Omnibuses operators are increased their fares around 50 to 100 % during festival times only such as Deepavali and Pongal.
For that increase in fares they are penalized by the State Transport department, police and Courts severely.
But our Southern Railway operates Airfares SUVITHA train s fares are increased by 400%. over the basic fates .SR operates during festival times and in addition to during the weekends in its Kerala and Tamilnadu state s territories reqularly.
But both state officials , political parties and Courts have not been realized the SR s 400% fares increases in fates regularly during weekends also.
But they severely punished the omnibus operators who increases only during festival times and not weekends. This punishments of Omnibuses operators are unwarranted .
At least both Tamilnadu and Kerala Government Transport secretaries / Courts should have been saved the Tamilnadu and Kerala people from the SR s 400% basic fares hike for train journey during weekends .
