DBWS-DBRT(Very old Dibrugarh Railway workshops)--Pride of Assam and India. BRIEF HISTORY OF DIBRUGARH WORKSHOP Due to development of coal, petroleum and tea industries in the undivided Lakhimpur district of Assam during the early part of nineteenth century, the communication to and from this region developed rapidly. As a result, the first Railway system... more...
of this region – the “Dibru Sadia Railway” was introduced in 1881. This Railway acted as a feeder line to the steamer ghat on the river Brahmaputra and complemented the Waterways, which was the only mode of bulk transportation during that time. After opening of “Dibru Sadia Railway” and its gradual development by the “Assam Railway and Trading Company” (ARTC) this Railway connected the distance tea gardens and collieries to the steamerghat of Mohanaghat at Dibrugarh thereby proving a link through the water ways upto the Chittagong (now in Bangladesh) and Kolkata Ports. Thus, Assam was connected to the outside world in 1895, when the DSR was connected to “Assam Bengal Railway” after which the rail traffic started gradually growing in this region. For the purpose of overhauling and maintenance of locomotives, this workshop was established as a loco workshop under Loco Supdt. W. Hoiker in 1881. At present, DBWS is undertaking POH and IOH activities of BG coaches only. For further details Visit:-click here

At a time when almost all divisions of NFR, including Alipurduar and Katihar, have been implementing various developmental works including double tracking, Tinsukia Railway Division on the other hand has even failed to provide basic passenger amenities, let alone ensure any development, observed Dipak Bhowmik, former member for several consecutive terms of Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee(DRUCC) who was instrumental in introducing Kolkata Express in the division. With so many deficiencies in the division it is a matter of surprise how Tinsukia division could achieve to secure best prizes in certain categories despite poor passenger services in the train, unauthorized entry in reserved compartments including Rajdhani Express, poor passenger safety, regular burglary, uncontrolled catering services, un-elevated station platforms, withdrawal of train services... more...
and encroachment, maintained a railway insider. Time and again several issues were raised before present DRM Prasant Mishra by different organizations but they fell into deaf ears. Tinsukia division is riddled with problems while several lakhs are allegedly being spent on ritual inspections of Railway high officials. The GM Chahatey Ram during his last visit to the Division categorically instructed the DRM to clear all encroachment from railway land, including railway stations, which have turned out to become dens of anti-social elements, but nothing progressed. Despite public demand and inconvenience, foot over-bridges have not been constructed in Bhojo, Safrai and Lakowa stations. Passengers have to cross tracks in contravention to railway safety guidelines, while many platforms are not elevated to BG standard creating extreme problems for aged and elderly passengers. Some stations are poorly lit, thus becoming vulnerable for night passengers, more so for women. Makum Jn being the third oldest railway station in India, the station is yet to have a road. Passengers have to cross railway tracks to get into the platform. Public have been demanding an over-bridge for long to tide over traffic congestion in the area as Makum Jn connects NH 37 and NH 38 to Doomdooma and Digboi. Large-scale corruption in construction and maintenance has been alleged. On November 16, 2016, the newly-constructed washing pit in Banipur Station (Dibrugarh) caved in incurring loss of several crores of rupees, but no inquiry was allegedly conducted by the railway authorities, according to a source. Tinsukia being in close proximity to China border, the Railway Ministry ought to have prioritized extension of the historical Makum-Dangori section to Dholla. Even though DEMU services were appreciated by the local populace and college goers, they were withdrawn systematically without any public notice.
I agree to the point, people enter in the reserved compartment with general ticket and by paying merely 50 or 60 rupees to the TC and gets their birth instead of paying full fare along with the fine(this is called adjustment policies). Both passenger and TC involvement in it(Passengers save some extra and TC gain extra money other than their salary). If you want NF Railway to progress in near future, this type of corrupt activities should be stop and railways employing(TC) should be honest with their profession and they should first think of their country before their personal means. this type of activities continues than its direct lost to the Indian Railway. Its a general request to all the passenger to pay full fare travel with pride instead of involving in such activities and also requested to the railway employ(TC) to be honest to the job and allow the railway to progress and don't sale their loyalty for few extra money. Railway is a public property and its the duty of the common people of India to take responsibility to avoid all illegal means of travel and littering its premises.
