Yesterday (21:53)   Passenger sends cheque to Railways foregoing fare subsidy!

The Railways is in a fix over a cheque of Rs 950 sent by a passenger apparently to give up the subsidy borne by the government on the train fare between Jammu and Delhi.
Currently, the Railways bears 43 per cent of the cost of all rail fares even as the public transporter incurs a loss of about Rs 30,000 crore every year in subsidising passenger fares.
"There is no provision to accept such cheques so we will return it," said a senior Railway Ministry official.
order to make passengers aware of the subsidy burden on the fare, it had started printing - "Indian Railways recovers only 57 per cent of cost of travel on an average" - on the computerised printed tickets issued to passengers since June 22 last year.
Recently, a person travelling from Jammu to New Delhi saw the message written on his ticket about the 43 per cent subsidy borne by the Railways during his train journey.
He then decided to forego the subsidy and sent a cheque of Rs 950 to IRCTC for a similar train journey undertaken by him and his wife on the Jammu Rajdhani.
He sent the cheque along with a letter addressing the railway minister stating that "he will never avail such financial benefits in future".
The Railways had already given an option to senior citizens for foregoing concessions while buying tickets.
"But foregoing senior citizen concession is voluntary now and we are planning to make it broadbased covering other categories as well," he said.
The Railways recovers only 57 per cent of the expenses incurred for passenger transportation through sale of tickets of all classes.
The Railways thus aims to convey a message to passengers that they have been given a subsidy of 43 per cent, or in other words, the transporter is incurring heavy losses to the tune of 43 per cent for ferrying travellers.

For tomorrow journey from HWH to NDLS (28.06.17), if I book ticket now, which has most chances of confirmation out of 12301, 12313 and 12259 trains? At present, WL in these trains is 84,77 & 68 resp. in 3AC and 41, 29 & 21 resp. in 2AC? Is chance of WL clearance higher in General WL or in Tatkal WL? Pl. reply. Very urgent.

NEW DELHI: Trolley service for catering, polite uniformed staff and on-board entertainment are some of the changes slated to be introduced in Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains from October this year.
Aiming at enhancing the experience of passengers travelling by these premier trains, the Indian Railways has undertaken a complete makeover exercise in 30 trains - 15 Rajdhani and 15 Shatabdi - at an estimated cost of Rs 25 crore.
Targeting the festive season which begins from October, railways have launched a three-month programme under Project Swarn (gold) to refurbish coach interiors, improving toilets
and cleanliness in coaches.
There have been complaints pertaining to catering, punctuality, toilet cleanliness and quality of linen among others in these trains.
It has been decided to improve services in these premier trains significantly and accordingly the Project Swarn has been launched with a three-month timeline, said a Railway Ministry official involved with the project.
The project also envisages strengthening of security system in trains with adequate escort personnel by RPF.
Rajdhani Express meant for Mumbai, Howrah, Patna, Ranchi and Bhubaneswar are among the 15 Rajdhani trains selected for service upgradation.
Shatabdi trains of Howrah-Puri, New Delhi-Chandigarh, New Delhi-Kanpur, Howrah-Ranchi, Anand Vihar-Kathgodam are among the 15 trains selected for the makeover exercise.
Steps will be taken for improving punctuality by reducing delays in premier trains, he said.
The catering will be also a focus area beside cleanliness.

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries.
