Apr 18 2016 (12:42)   Proposed bullet train must make 100 trips daily

Ahmedabad: The proposed bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will have to ferry 88,000-118,000 passengers per day, or undertake 100 trips daily, for the Railways to keep it financially viable, according to a report by Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A).
The report, titled, "Dedicated High Speed Railway (HSR) Networks in India: Issues in Development," states that if the Railways set the ticket price at Rs 1500for 300-km drive per person fifteen years after the operation, it will have to ferry between 88,000 and 110,000 passengers every day to ensure that it repays the loans with interest on time.
Japan
...
has offered a concessional loan of Rs 97,636 crore to fund about 80 per cent  of the project cost with a repayment period of 50 years beginning from the 16th year of operation at an interest rate of 0.1 per cent.
For the remaining 20 per cent loan, the authors assume 8 per cent average rate of interest (on Rs 20,000 crore to be funded by Centre).
Japan has offered a 15-year moratorium on loan, so revenue concerns for the Indian Railways will arise from the 16th year, the authors state in the paper.
The total distance covered by the train will be 534 kilometres.
The paper has been jointly authored by faculty members G Raghuram, professor of the institute's Public Systems Group, and Prashanth Udayakumar.
Fifteen years after the bullet train becomes operational, while the actual operating cost is not known, the paper assumes two scenarios by pegging operating cost at 20 per cent and 40 per cent of revenue.
"So if the Railways earn Rs 100 revenue, Rs 20 or Rs 40 will go for maintenance, and remaining surplus money will go for cash payment of loan with interest.
Now, to cover the loan with operating cost in two scenarios, we consider passengers travelling an average 300 kilometres. In this case, we will need 88,000-118,000 passengers respectively for both the scenarios," Raghuram said.
"Typically one train carries 800 passengers, so to carry 88,000 passengers daily, you will need to take a total 100 trips, or 50 trips each way.
So, we need three trains every hour in each direction," he said. As per the paper, "there are many positive benefits and externalities of the HSR which would be useful in India’s overall aspirational development."

Feb 15 2016 (15:42)   IRCTC Launches Utsonmobile App For Booking Unreserved Railway Tickets

Jayashree ❖ Amita*^   35474 news posts
Entry# 1739730   News Entry# 257418         Tags   Past Edits
Unreserved tickets could not be purchased through mobile earlier and one had to take a printout of the same to show to the TTE. Most of the people who travel through trains do not have access to printers around and there would be chaos to get a printout. At the moment the only way someone can get unreserved seats booked are either at face-to-face UTS counter, Automatic ticket vending machines(ATVM) or get printout of the tickets booked on the app.
Indian Railways has now come up with a smart solution for the same. They have launched ‘UTSOnMobile mobile app” designed by Centre for Railway Information Systems, where customers can get unreserved tickets on their smartphones directly without the need of a printout
...
from any machine or ATVM.
Suresh Prabhu launched the service aimed at easing the ticket process for both the TTE and the customers, “Indian Railways is heading towards Digital India to bring transparency in Indian Railways and thus these IT enabled applications have been launched.” The app had been initially designed for South Indian cities but has been expanded to New Delhi, Mumbai, Secunderabad, Chennai and Kolkata.
How to register for UTS M-Ticketing?
To get a paperless unreserved ticket for the journey of your choice, download the utsonmobile application on your smartphone from Google Play Store or Windows Store, or visit utsonmobile.indianrail.gov.in. Once downloaded, go through the following steps to register for the paperless service:
Register either through the website or the utsonmobile app. Provide your name, mobile number and enter the received four digit one time password(OTP) to log in to the application. One logged in, fill out the form regarding name, city, payment mode, default booking train type, class, ticket type, number of passengers and frequent travel routes. All this information above will be used to reduce the number of clicks while booking a ticket, to provide an intuitive interface Once the terms and conditions are accepted, the customer can complete registration and receive the Login ID and password required for the same through an SMS
There are some key points to be kept in mind while registering for the service. The mobile number entered during registration should be the same as the one being used while booking tickets. Mobile number will always be used as user id by default for login purposes. The city entered will be used to customize the application during booking, to show the source station for the passenger.
The mode of payment is R Wallet which can be filled through netbanking, debit or credit cards of your choice. It can also be filled from railway counters in denominations of Rs 100. If R Wallet is surrendered, an ID card will be required as a proof of identity, which is solely the passenger’s responsibility to provide a genuine one and not a fake ID proof.
How to book a ticket through the application?
Only registered users will be able to take advantage of this service. If you haven’t registered yet, looks through the process above to make things clear. Once done, proceed to the login page to login using the credentials you receive on your handset. Make sure you enter the credentials correctly, because incorrect login input three times in a row can lock your account for an hour. Only after an hour will you be able to book any tickets through the app.
1) Choose the options for desired journey from the dropdown menus for the trains and passenger information.
2) The application will give the journey cost and the balance will be shown in R-Wallet for this purpose.
3) Book ticket button will confirm the seat for the passenger. However, the location of the passenger will be verified after this.
4) Once the booking is confirmed, enable GPS on your smartphone to ensure you’re not within 15 meters of the railway station. If you are within 15m of the station or the platform, you will not be allowed to book a ticket.
5) The booking of journey tickets is possible if only you are within 5km radius of the station. For platform tickets, one needs to be within 2km radius of the station or the platform. This means you need to be double sure of your exact location to book the ticket successfully.
6) Once the journey has been booked, it cannot be cancelled for the paperless seat booking. There is a caveat that the journey should start within 1 hour of booking of the ticket.
The application features the following:
Quick Booking – book tickets on frequently travelled routes Normal Booking – Journey tickets on route of choice Cancel Ticket – cancel a ticket before taking printout at the kiosk. This is not valid for paperless tickets Booking History – show older booked tickets Profile – Maintain the passenger information and R-Wallet balance Show Ticket – Displays the ticket for the TTE to scan and verify Logout – successfully log out from the application
It is very simple from there onwards, to show the TTE your ticket, simply press the ‘Show Ticket’ option in the app to show the confirmed booking. TTE will be able to see the exact details of the booking including starting and ending point of the journey. TTE can also scan the QR code of the booking through his/her Ticket Validator Device and confirm the booking.
It should have been more flexible so that the person is able to book the ticket for a far off location as well while in a hurry to catch the train, however considering this is unreserved booking which usually starts at the last moment, the method seems fair enough. However, the whole process can be made smoother by validating the location of the passenger before the booking is being done so as to not cancel the booking once all the details have been put.
The application and paperless idea are still in a nascent stage and we expect them to get better with time. Maybe in a year or so, you will be able to book tickets without the hassles of internet as well, however this is only a wishful thinking.
Download UTS on Mobile App from here.

“ I would like to share a incident, that occurred during my journey from Howrah to Satna.
I was traveling in a train. Train was already 10+ hours late. A pantry car employee came to our compartment and asked for dinner order, when we enquired about menu, he simply told there is veg thali that will cost Rs.100/- and it will contain paneer, vegetable, rice, daal and parantha where as non-veg thali will have chicken, roti, rice, daal and vegetable and it will cost Rs.150/-. One of the passenger asked him “I need only 2 rotis and vegetable” and pantry car waiter replied there is no such provision either you take full veg thali or you don’t take that passenger had no

option other than opting for veg thali that would cost him Rs. 100/-. Everyone ordered either veg thali or non veg thali even I ordered veg thali.
Suddenly a guy named Prabal sitting next to me asked waiter for menu card, Waiter replied arrogantly “lena ho to lo yeh menu dikhane wali bimar nahi paalte hum” he even said if you want we can give you a normal thali that will cost you Rs.50/-. Guy insisted but waiter opposed it arrogantly and rudely.
Prabal directly called railway helpline number-1800111321 and lodged a complaint regarding this, on seeing the confidence of that guy even I called this number and lodged a complaint. After 30 minutes that waiter came to our seat and gave us menu at that time he was very soft. What surprised us there were no option for thali that will cost you Rs.100/-, yes paneer and chicken curry were mentioned in the menu but those were not the mandatory part of thali.
Anyone can order anything from the menu as per their choice and requirement, i.e. if you need only 2 chapattis and a paneer then you can order only required stuffs, and for it you don’t have to order whole thali. Even if you will order paneer, rice, daal, veg, roti all then also the cost cannot reach up to Rs.100/-. On seeing this we called the manager of the pantry and he asked his employee to take order properly from all the passengers as per their need.
This is the story of every pantry car in India; they will force you to buy everything even if you don’t need it, so friends I will request you all to please ask for menu before ordering anything. If they refuse please call 1800111321 and lodge a complain there. Government has protocol to act as per our complain.
Government has provided us with facility to act against such unethical practices, its our duty to know about the right way and to stand against it.
P.S This post is not about just Rs.100/- , it’s about unethical practices that are going around us, and what we can do against such practices.”

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
