I am from Kannur and I have seem both the trains 6517/18 and 6527/28 especially 6517 running empty on most days will less passengers except on weekdays or on festivals like Onam, Vishu, Ramzan, and Christmas. Yes before there was a huge demand to extend 6517/18 to Kannur from Mangalore the main reason was the road connecting to bangalore with Kannur was closed from 2008 for repair from Virjpet to Makutta. Buses has to take a longer route and also at the same time Karnataka imposed night travelling of vehicles in the only available route stating vehicles are disturbing the movements of wildlife. All these made miserable for people travelling between Banglore and Malabar region of Kerala. Now in June 2010 the makutta road has opened and majority of people are travelling in this route by bus, car, etc. which takes only 5-6 hours for the pvt luxary bus around 7...
more... hours only. Personally I am from Kannur and was working in B’lore for the past 15 years . I know most of the people except aged all prefers buses.
Those who are preferring train their first choice is 6527/28 instead of 6517/18 which takes longer time and ascends and descends around 900 mts height to maximum and journey is uncomfortable (personal experiences) compared to 6527/28 which gets full first.
This opinion is based on my observation and especially people around Thalassery, Kannur, and Kasargod prefer buses (6-7 hours only) than train to bangalore except for aged and those who have plenty of time. Seats are available in train for most of ther days but almost all buses (around 20 to 30 buses from Kannur) are full.
My opinion is it is better to divert 6517/18 to KARWAR as we have 6527/28 (daily) which is most preferred train by Malabar people and Karwar has no direct rail assess to capital B’lore. Actually IR has to extend 6517 to Karwar but they extended to CAN siting the inconvenience cause by the road travel (Makuta), which has been solved now.
Thank you.
