While Royapuram station was established in 1856, the city's second railway station, Chennai Central, didn't open until 17 years later in 1873. Trains to North India began operating from Chennai Central, while southern services continued from Royapuram. As Chennai harbor grew, freight trains started using the Royapuram line. Consequently, southern services were relocated to Egmore. Later, the section between Kurukkupettai and Royapuram was electrified. Today, only suburban trains from Chennai Beach to Arkonam and those going to Gummidipoondi stop at Royapuram station. Despite its historical significance, the Royapuram station fell into disrepair. To address this, the Southern Railway authorities undertook a restoration project in 2005, costing 35 lakhs.

Royapuram station 1856 mein ban gaya tha, lekin Chennai Central station 17 saal baad 1873 mein ban saka. North India ke liye trains Chennai Central se chali, while southern services Royapuram se chalte rahe. Jaise jaise Chennai harbour bada hua, freight trains Royapuram line use karne lage. Is wajah se southern services Egmore shift ho gaye. Baad mein Kurukkupettai aur Royapuram ke beech ka section electrified ho gaya. Aaj kal sirf Chennai Beach se Arkonam aur Gummidipoondi jaane wali suburban trains hi Royapuram station pe rukti hai. Apne historical importance ke baavajood Royapuram station kharab ho gaya. Iske liye Southern Railway authorities ne 2005 mein 35 lakh rupees mein ek restoration project kiya.
