Kavalkinarurailway station to berestored after 22 years
Tirunelveli: Thanks to the concerted effort of the people of Kavalkinaru, the Kavalkinaru railway station a small halt station for passenger trains in Radhapuram taluk in Tirunelveli districtc will once again be on the railway map. The Southern Railway has issued a sanction order to restore the station 22 years after it was closed due to lack of adequate revenue generation and presence of other stations in close proximity. After the broad gauge line was laid from Tirunelveli and Nagercoil in 1981, the station was used by villagers in the vicinity. But the southern railway closed the station on October 1, 1994 as the station was not generating enough revenue.
the following years, the region witnessed a growth spurt. Several windfarms were set up. Nearly 30 educational institutions, including engineering colleges, also came up in the region. Armed with the development factor, the villagers from Kavalkinaru panchayat formed a committee called 'Kavalkinaru Railway Station Restoration Committee' and took up the task of getting the station restored. "We kept meeting MPs and MLAs and railway officials without giving up hope. The sitting MP K R P Prabhakaran and former Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Pandian were of great help in taking our demand to the railway board and to the parliament," said Durai Palavesamuthu, president of the committee. Finally, the railway paid heed to their demands. In a letter from the Thiruvananthapuram division dated April 29th, 2016 the commercial department of the division advised the Kavalkinaru panchayat to pay Rs 17,62,500 for restoration works. It is a tentative cost and the final project cost will be intimated to them. "We are ready to mobilise the funds. Once reopened, the Kavalkinaru station will be one of the best stations in the region," said Palavesamuthu, beaming with determination. President of Kanyakumari District Rail Users Association S R Sriram said that the station, once restored, will be of great help to hundreds of students, windfarm workers, scientists from ISRO Mahendragiri campus and staff of the Kudankulam nuclear
