All of us are shocked to hear the news of the death of 15 people who died when the Mathura-Kasganj Express rammed into a vehicle at an unmanned railway crossing near Hathras ,Uttar Pradesh. Two persons have been seriously injured.
To solve such grave problem caused by unmanned level crossings in our country the former rail minister Mr. Dinesh Trivedi proposed to set up a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) named Rail-Road Grade Separation Corporation of India to To fast track elimination of level crossings in the next five years. I hope the huge problem caused by the unmanned level crossings is solved very soon.

is the relevant portion of Dinesh Ji's rail budget speech:
"9. I would like to inform the august House that more than 40% of the consequential train accidents, involving 60% to 70% of the total casualties occur at unmanned level crossings. However, funding is an issue which needs to be collectively addressed. To fast track elimination of level crossings in the next five years, I have decided to set up a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) named Rail-Road Grade Separation Corporation of India."

the vehicle driver should have been cautious enough to see whether a train is approaching or not, simple wrong estimates of the speed of the train leads to many accidents which can be avoided by just being cautious.
i remember an ad which used to come before in tv - in unmanned level crossings, a driver stops the vehicle well before the tracks, gets down and checks both in both directions for train movement and once he feels it safe to cross, takes his vehicle across the track which is the right way. but nobody has the patience to do it. simply following the procedures will avoid many accidents.

Well said... Unfortunate but true...
Most accidents happen when people try to save a minute .... they just hate waiting.... when the train approaches, LP honks regularly, yet ppl cross... who are to blame then.. RLYS or PPL?
Secondly, I suppos almost 80% of all unmanned crossings have much better visibility that a person can see the train approaching from a long distance...

yes. i was just browsing youtube yesterday and found Mumbai Rajdhani blasting through suburban mumbai and on the parallel track ppl r getting down from the local. instead of getting down from the train at the platform, they used to take shorter route to cross platforms. i saw there were so many ppl trying to cross the track and suddenly Rajdhani appeared honking and blasting. somewhere general public also has to be blamed for such accidents.

As people are always at risk at such unmanned gates, they have to take precautions.Instead some vehicle drivers have the dangerous habit of speaking on mobile phone, even at such crossings resulting in accidents. This happened recently in Karnataka, when the driver failed to notice the incoming train.
