If a person is poor and doesn't use/have AC in his own house; why force him to travel in AC for one day and shell thrice the money? IR should increase AC coaches slowly and proportionally as the country advances. Some routes are more conducive for AC travel; other aren't. For eg, Sure as heck, Lucknow-Chhapra dedicated trains doesn't need TEN AC coaches when there are dozens other trains running on the route. IR needs to do a check as to which classes have more WL's and then decide. Sometimes, trains have SL completely booked and AC still relatively empty which equates to lesser demand for AC on that route. It's a simple question of supply and demand. Of course, since IR is a monopoly, it can theoretically throw away any "social service" thing to the wind and make just AC coaches if it wants.

In routes like Mumbai to Goa you can actually book flights economy class lower than 1AC and some people here still believe this route needs a VB in addition to Tejas rather than increasing frequency or running existing trains on time in which the common man actually travels.
Enough of this nonsense of Mumbai Goa trains each and every RM seems to add one new train on this route every time whereas other routes are highly neglected.

I see. Mumbai Bangalore route is quite neglected, I have heard; mainly due to bus lobby, isn't it? That can use some long distance trains.

They can for now keep atleast 5 SL coaches instead of reducing to 2 immediately that too in long distance trains in short journeys people have other options like state transport buses.
Agree Railways need to do this but such radical changes in a country with such income disparity you can't force them in such radical manner it should happen gradually.

The trains are also slow compared to buses. Strong bus lobby also the Bangalore Goa bus lobby too didn't allow to increase frequency or YPR Goa train from biweekly to daily for so long it took one strong MOSR from Karnataka to make it daily.
