I was comparing air fares between metros (Mumbai-Delhi, Kolkata- Delhi, Chennai-Delhi, Bangalore-Delhi etc) and found out that even fares for travel dates of just 1 week in advance right now are almost equal to 2A fares on Rajdhanis and slightly above normal 2A fares. If you book more in advance, you can even get cheaper fares. Given this scenario, why would anyone travel by train (I am not talking about intermediate passengers) when they can fly and save 90% of the time for almost the same fare. Even 3A passengers can pay slightly more and fly. The Indian government should now focus on aviation as much as they do on railways as air travel is the way of the future. Aviation should now be given lot of importance and rules and regulations should be changed such that it favors air travel. Railways is also important, no doubt.

Haha, so because of 2-3 hrs wastage of getting boarding pass, you will endure 20-25 hours of rail travel. Nice! Also, I am not talking about a specific case. You are right in your perspective. I was talking more on a general terms. Air travel has to be given more importance now. Building of railways require huge land area for laying tracks and other infrastructure and manpower for maintenance which is not easy in India and which can take decades. Air travel on the other hand just requires airport land! And as we progress, air travel is getting more and more affordable and efficient!

Indian Railways even at today's cost (at least for SL class) has one of the lowest costs of transportation compared to world standards. Now, Indians protest whenever fares are increased. Indians want world class facilities but don't want to pay for it. There is no free lunch! Railways should remove quotas in railway seat reservations. A large number of quotas exist that eat up a lot of seats that are not available for general quota. A lot of mal practices and frauds happen by agents and railway officials who sell these seats (If remained unsold) at a premium thereby depriving the railways of the revenue!

Too much slack in the schedule of this train. Today's train (11/6) passed Shamgarh 1hr 22 mins late after its scheduled time but it covered majority of the delay within 133 kms and reached Ratlam just 15 mins late!

That's because enough slack is available in its schedule as its average speed is just 55 kmph! Hence, it can cover up easily. Not a big deal!

I saw on social media about rules change in railways and that there will no longer be system of waitlist and that tickets will only be issues if it's confirm or RAC. This is absurd and doesn't make any sense. Is this true???

Ok, got it. Makes sense now but for all trains, it would be too much. For example, if a ticket is not available, a person who is busy in his work or life will have no time to continuosly check when tickets will become available so he or she may like to book a waitlisted ticket. Removing waitlist from all trains doesn't seem feasible or practical!

As I have heard that railways loses money on SL tickets so I believe it serves well for railways as people travel on W/L tickets and railways gets the reveue. If W/L is removed, people are anyways gonna travel, they will just buy current 2nd class ticket and the TTEs will make a killing. The railways will be the biggest loser!

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
