The city police rounded up 40 differently abled persons, including five women, all members of the Tamil Nadu Anaithuvagai Matruthiranaligal Matrum Paadukappor Urimaikkana Sangam, when they attempted to enter the Salem Railway Junction to picket the trains to press their demands.
They raised slogans urging the Centre to convert the Bill favouring various concessions to the differently abled into Act, three per cent reservation for the differently abled in jobs, and hike in monthly assistance between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 5,000.
Led by Venkatachalam, the district president of the association, they attempted to
march into the Railway Junction, when the police intercepted the association members and took 40 of them into preventive custody.
