Mangaluru, Sep 30: The daily train service between Bengaluru and Karwar via Mangaluru has been suffering from lack of passengers. The services had been started recently after remaining cancelled for several months due to coronavirus fears.
Railway sources said that on September 24, 18 passengers travelled in the train on September 24, 15 on September 25, 20 on September 26, 21 on September 27 and 18 on September 28.
In the train which left Bengaluru for Karwar on September 24 had only 13 passengers, 23 on September 25, 27 on September 26, 18

on September 27 and 12 on September 28. On other days too, only a handful of passengers have booked their seats.
It is said that people are wary of undertaking train travel because of corona concerns. But the trains follow social distance and sanitation systems for protecting the passengers. The passengers need not be worried on this issue, the railway department says.
From September 4, train No 6585 began its journey while train No. 6586 from Karwar began on September 25. The train leaves Bengaluru at 6.45 pm and reaches Karwar at 8.25 am the next day. It leaves Karwar at 6 pm and reaches Bengaluru at 8 am. Tickets for these trains are not issued at the stations and advance reservation is necessary. Some have suggested that issuance of tickets at stations might result in an increase in the number of passengers using these train services.

Railways has implemented 34 per cent more works in Karnataka during NDA regime compared to the UPA regime, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal informed Lok Sabha.
Replying to BJP member Shobha Karandlaje question, Goyal said the NDA government sanctioned more funds to railways projects in the state compared to the previous government.

during 2014-20, total 907 km length (253 km of the new line and 654 km of doubling) falling fully/partly in Karnataka have been commissioned at an average rate of 151 km per year, which is 34 per cent more than those commissioned during 2009-14, the Minister said.
For the 2020-21 fiscal total Rs 4,220 crore budget outlay was made for railways works in Karnataka.
"As on April 1, 2020, total 36 ongoing projects of total length 4,529 km, costing Rs 49,536 crore, falling fully/partly in Karnataka were in different stages of planning/sanctioning/execution, out of which commissioning of 935 km length has been achieved and an expenditure of Rs 13,618 crore has been incurred up to March 2020," Goyal said.

What they can do is transfer all EMDs to UBL and keep ALCo and rest as electric locos, anyhow more number of ALCo's are being condemned as more and more EMD are being produced

Yes..... KJM will keep its eloco and mostly condemn all this ALCO and most of the EMD locos of KJM will get shifted to UBL...Because for EMD no other option left for KJM other than transfer to UBL. But EMD production is being seized and also I think rather than making EMD they could utilize the GE locos which is in production still.

But for GE, only Roza shed is authorized to home GE locomotives as of today. And BTW GE as of now makes only diesel goods/freight locos,no passenger locos and KJM is mostly known for EMD Passenger locos

Yeah GE locos are only with ROZA but my views were slowly like ALCO, EMD condition are also becoming like ALCO only POH of HHP Goods loco is stopped. So most likely EMD will be condemn sooner. So only option left for diesel locos is GE locos. Since railways cant condemn GE locos as per agreement as of now because if they condemn GE will start to take penalised amount from IR as far I know. So ROZA and GIMB GE shed would only diesel shed in IR in future may be.

Giving conservation programmes a shot in the arm, the Karnataka State Wildlife Board on Monday “dropped” the controversial Hubballi-Ankola Railway project which had already been rejected thrice by the state government.
Refusing to yield to intense lobbying favouring the project, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa-headed board decided to drop the project for the time being.
Despite the project being rejected thrice by the state government, the proponents had bypassed the state and submitted a proposal to the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL), headed by the prime minister, last year. Interestingly, the NBWL had directed

the Railways to come through the state government. The issue was tabled yet again before the Board and rejected by the chief minister.
Sources in the Wildlife Board revealed to DH that a few of the IAS officers present during the meeting tried to convince the chief minister to give approval for the project as it would support the development. However, the majority members, including Forest Minister Anand Singh and MLA Sowmya Reddy, appealed that it should not be given clearance considering what the state has witnessed in Kodagu. Convinced by the argument, Yediyurappa reportedly directed the officials to ‘drop’ the project for now.
It was surprising that the officials tried to convince the chief minister by referring to a report by the IISc submitted by noted ecologist Dr T V Ramachandra, favouring the project by adopting a few mitigation measures. A senior Karnataka Forest Department official confirmed that the project has been ‘dropped’.
The project spanning 168 km linking Hosapete with ports at Belikeri and Tadadi near Karwar in Uttara Kannada district had sought diversion of 596 hectares of forest in the Western Ghats which has Kali Tiger Reserve and other protected areas. The rail line work required the felling of close to 2 lakh trees.
Giridhar Kulkarni, a wildlife activist who had petitioned to the State Wildlife Board to drop the project said, “It is reliably learnt that majority of the board members opposed the proposal. I hope their objections would be recorded and a suitable decision should be taken in the interest of wildlife.”

As Sachin said many times there has been similar news but that was not final because final decision must be taken by railway board. Why are you always behind this new line? There are many new lines which are marked in IRI atlas well in advance

The state government has set its eyes on the controversial Hubballi-Ankola Railway project that may leave a Rs 4,000-crore additional burden on the state’s and country’s exchequer besides causing irreparable damage to the biodiversity-rich Western Ghats.
Despite the project being rejected repeatedly by various statutory bodies citing serious ecological damage, the government has proposed to the take up the matter for discussion at the 13th State Wildlife Board meeting on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.
Ever since the project was first conceived by the Railways in 1998, mainly for transporting iron and manganese ore from Ballari-Hosapete
...
region to Karwar and Tadadi ports, the project has been rejected by the forest department, MoEF Regional office, Forest Advisory Committee, MoEF: New Delhi and Central Empowered Committee (CEC) appointed by the Supreme Court.
A senior forest official said, “As the discussion on the project was deferred indefinitely in the previous meeting, the same has been listed now for decision.”
Even though the project was originally planned to transport the minerals, the same has witnessed slump following the ban by the SC in 2011 and hence, the proposed line intends to serve no purpose, according to conservationists. Sources in the mining industry told DH that Vasco port (Goa) is also a major port with better train and road connectivity and is only 30 km more than the distance to Karwar.
The project, while necessitating 595 hectares of forest land, would result in axing of a whopping more than 1.5 lakh trees, besides causing severe environmental losses worth Rs 614.796 crore (loss of timber and loss of environment).
“There is already a parallel broad guage line from Hosapete to Madagaon for the transport of iron ore, which can carry up to 6 million tonnes annually. Currently, to increase the capacity of the traffic, doubling work on the Hosapete-Vasco line is under progress at a sanctioned cost of Rs 2,127 crore. When so much is being spent on alternatives, it is worthless that the government is raking up the already rejected project,” said Mahesh, a conservationist working in the Western Ghats Region.
