A funny thing happened with an acquaintance of mine.

She had never boarded a long distance train alone before. She had to go towards Bombay side and had a 3A ticket in Kushinagar Express. Couple of folks went to the local station to drop her off[and personally see her into the train]. Kushinagar arrives at Babhnan before Avadh Express [another Bombay bound train]. That day, Kushinagar was delayed and Avadh Express arrived first. They stupidly put her in that train. They later claimed that there was no announcement and that there

was only announcement for a Barauni bound train[which they said was for LJN-BJU; Avadh Express also starts from BJU so they can miss it].

But what they can't miss is different terminals [both starting and ending points] and names of the two trains. Still, both proper educated folks, put her in the wrong train. Still, her 3A SL berth was empty and she traveled upto Gonda station where the TTE came and told her that she had boarded the wrong train. The Kushinagar by this time had caught up with Avadh Express and she could have theoretically changed at Gonda but she didn't. So, the TTE advised her to get down at Lucknow [where she knew folks] and then return next day. Kushinagar had already gone away ahead, so no chance of switching trains at Lucknow[Aishbagh].

Yes, sometimes IR does change platform of trains at the last moment leading to rush of pax. Though in this case, none of that happened.

It was late evening time, ~1900 hrs for this to have happened. Since this station Babhnan has only 2 platforms [one for UP and one for DN trains], so no switching of platforms does under ordinary circumstances. I assume the folks were so busy in their phones that they disregarded the most basic of things: station announcements or train boards or asking the station master himself.

On the contrary, some folks who don't have any idea about technology or trains, they rely on the good old fashioned method.Asking people on the platform/vendors/station master/people inside the train about their destination. They cross check so many times that it would be a wonder if they boarded the wrong train.

Useful
Two more I recall out of which one is too common. Two ICEs bound for Gorakhpur leave Lucknow and many passengers board at BNZ station of the city. One goes via main line and other loop line. Till today, despite announcements done multiple times that pax going to X should NOT board this train, people still end up boarding the wrong one.

And if God forbid, the natural order of the trains is reversed [like the loop line ICE comes first due to some reason like other one running late for

operational reasons though it's rare] , many folks per coach fluster. Reason:People don't pay attention of train's announcements anymore. They zone themselves out either in intervening conversations or more likely, phone and earbuds. Not that it's a bad thing,as long as you read the train number/train name at the last moment.

Another happened with a relative of mine way before. She had to go to Delhi via some train [lucknow Mail was it?]. And IR had then changed terminals for Lucknow Mail from LKO to LJN. So she waited at LKO NR for an hour almost waiting for her train to line up. It didn't. And ended up missing it. On an unrelated note, posters of 12229 changing terminals from LJN to LKO still abound both stations , so that folks don't confuse.

But then, Lucknow NR and NER are confusing to folks. Both have the same station name but belong to different zones and routes. To make it worse, even Lucknow NR is technically a Junction point. The only difference officially is either "Lucknow " or "Lucknow Jn" on the ticket, assuming one doesn't read station codes.

In such cases the best bet would be to ask some railway employee like a pointsman or a station master.

Recently when I travelled in 16128, I wast sure of my coach position (B2). I recalled seeing it at the rear @ MS (in 16127); so I thought it would be at front. (No coach indicators @ srgm where I boarded )
...

However NTES displayed the opposite (that my coach is at the rear).

I was confused and didn't want to risk standing at the wrong place (only 2 mnts halt).

So I asked the pointsman (no one else was there for enquiry) & he spoke over phone to someone (might be SM??) and within 5 minutes they announced the position. (And it was at the back!!!)

I seriously don't know how people take such steps!!!!! Sheer carelessness.

With population like this train to cater, IR is running many special/passenger trains having just station code in their TB. Some are having 10-12 station code in one small TB with stencil so minute that one needs a telescope to read the numbers..
