THE SAGA OF THE TATKAL TICKET CKWL 47 & HOW ALL THE SOOTHSAYERS OF IRI ATE HUMBLE PIE
(An old post of mine dated 11th Dec 2013 now reposted as it's a personal favourite. Kindly forgive me for its abnormal length)
It was a tale which had all the elements of a pot-boiler and it was a day, I was glad, that all the astrologers at IRI went awry in their reckoning of stellar positions or shall we say confirmation prospects.
But
...
let me begin at the beginning. My son was home in Kolkata on his annual holiday from IIT Chennai and was to return on the 9th of Dec via Lucknow and Mughalsarai by a threesome combo of 12369 Kumbha Express/13050 ASR-HWH Express and on the last lap from MGS by 12296 Sanghamitra Express. However what my son proposes the IIT disposes and accordingly he was advised by his research guide to jettison his roundabout tour programme and report back pronto at IIT latest by the 11th Dec. This message was conveyed to him on the morning of the 8th.
Then started the MAD SCRAMBLE for direct TATKAL tickets from HWH to Chennai. The options for the 9th were 12841 Coromandel and 08041 SRC-MAS Special. As I had a rather poor opinion of my own TATKAL booking skills with a ZERO% success rate, I had outsourced the booking to a very reliable admin friend of mine at IRI, who was more adept at coming to the aid of intending travellers in dire need. However. the 8th was not to be his day. It was more like Sachin Tendulkar having a bad day in the office and getting out for a golden duck when 75000 fans at the Eden Gardens had assembled to witness yet another century from him. My son and I were utterly disappointed when he reported that all that he could manage was a Tatkal WL47 by sleeper class in the Coromandel. To give due credit to him, let me admit that he did sound very apologetic and penitent. His parting words were " Is ticket ka koi faida nahin hai. Isliye hum isay baad mai cancel kar denge " So we decided to go through the rigmarole of tatkal booking with renewed vigour the next day.
The options on Monday the 9th, for journey on the 10th, were once again Coromandel, the old faithful, and 22825 SHM-MAS SF Express. This time I decided to try my luck hoping to make it big much like say ROHIT SHARMA scoring a century in his maiden test. But as a matter of ABUNDANT PRECAUTION, I had also roped in the services of YET ANOTHER ADMIN FRIEND, whose hairs had turned GREY with years of TATKAL BOOKING and an ENVIABLE SUCCESS RATE to boast of.
Come D-Day or rather D-Hour and my admin friend and I were both at our PCs in right earnest and also exchanging notes, over the phone, on the progress of our respective endeavours. However, success proved to be ELUSIVE once again as both of us tripped at the last hurdle and were disqualified by the dreaded signal of PAYMENT FAILURE.
My son was forlorn and down in the pits of despair. But I encouraged him saying if our standby GENERAL ticket by 3AC for 10th Dec by 22825 SHM-MAS SF Exp, then waitlisted 2. did not confirm at the time of charting, I would book an air ticket for him to fly to Chennai on the 10th or 11th. A peek at the prevailing rates for air tickets indicated that they were hovering in the vicinity of 10K and still MOUNTING. That offer of mine reassured him to some extent and managed to soothe his taut nerves.
By 10.30 am on the morning of the 9th, the die had been cast, so to say. The TATKAL FIASCOS were behind us and there was nothing much to be done till charting for 22825 or confirmation of the WL2 in 3AC prior to that moment of reckoning, whichever was earlier. If that too came a cropper, the only option was to seek refuge in the court of the last resort, the aviation sector.
Thereafter, it was business for me as usual with a visit to my banks in the neighborhood to set right my finances in order, while my son busied himself with some off-site research work on esoteric themes like the behaviour of SPIN WAVES IN MAGNETIC FIELDS, whatever that may mean. Meanwhile I returned home at 1 pm after finishing my outdoor work for the morning session
At 1.20 pm came a BOLT FROM THE BLUE. Admin friend 1 of the 8th instant phoned to say " Aapke bete ka TATKAL WL47 ticket aajke Coromandel mai confirm ho gaya hai. Maine usay cancel karna bhool gaya tha." Momentarily I was stunned. All this was happening against the RUN OF PLAY. I mumbled my thanks to him and gathered my wits around me. The Coromandel Express was scheduled to depart from Howrah, a good 16 kms away from my residence, in 90 mns time viz. 1450 and we were totally unprepared.
I quickly shouted to my son to pack and get ready to leave in 20 mns time. Luckily my car was there and I could arrange for a driver in 10 mns. While helping my son to pack, I also summoned my wife who was busy in her school and would have been home only at 2.30 pm. But overtaken by the dizzying pace of events she was home by 1.40 pm. Meanwhile, I once again called my admin friend and got the PNR and other details from him. He advised me to sms the PNR number to 139 and get the msg the TTE would look for. He also gave us the details S12-5.
My wife was loathe to let my son leave without having LUNCH BUT THERE WAS NO TIME FOR THESE LUXURIES. I asked her to pack it for my son in a tiffin box and told her that we two can have it after we return home from Howrah.
And the three of us left home at exactly 1.50 pm with just 60 mns time in hand. The journey time to HWH in medium heavy traffic conditions was about 60 mns and if the odds were stacked against you it could stretch to 90 mns. To my reckoning the chances of making it was like the proverbial KBC 50-50.
While on the way to HWH by car my wife literally spoon-fed my son, the menu for his lunch now being a spartan fare of CURD RICE punctuated by SAMBHAR and a SABJI. Meanwhile, I successfully managed to get the much-needed SMS from IRCTC on his mobile. And VOILA by the GRACE OF GOD and relatively sparse afternoon population of vehicles on the roads, we set foot in front of the new complex at HWH at 2.30 pm, in a record time of merely 40 mns. We thanked our stars for the small mercies and went into the station concourse only to discover that PF22, earmarked for the Coromandel was occupied by an upstart and late arrived Gitanjali from Mumbai. At 3 pm there was an announcement that Coromandel would depart from PF21 instead of 22. What followed was a bedlam as about 300 persons who had queued up to board the UR compartments suddenly made a headlong rush towards PF21 running helter skelter. Some of them tripped and fell in the process while others found the going tough with their luggage. Finally the empty rake arrived at 1520 and had not departed till my wife and I bid adieu to our son at 1550. Ultimately the train left at 1610, 80 mns late and reached Chennai yesterday evening at 1800 hours, just 45 mns late.
PS1. No offence meant to all the PNR predictors at IRI who are doing a great job. AISE CHAMATKAR TO KABHI KABHI HO HI JAATA HAI. For the sake of record there were 23 predictions for this PNR CKWL47 and ALL 23 WITHOUT EXCEPTION WERE " WAITLIST "
PS2. Admin I of 8th Dec was my dear friend Suresh Sirvi and ADMIN II of 9th Dec was my OLD FAITHFUL, Pramodh Kommattil.
My thanks to both of them for the pains, efforts and time they invested to bail me out of trouble. For the umpteenth time, I feel INDEBTED to them as well as IRI.
