This tip is for those wanting to go to Pondicherry by bus as I recently traveled in this route. As there are few trains from Chennai to Pondicherry, bus is the preferred mode. If you are catching a bus from Koyambedu, it is better to go by govt bus. They have very good frequency and charge is Rs 92 for non-ac. They will take 4 hrs to reach Pondicherry. I am not sure but govt AC buses would also be there.
Be careful if you want to take a private bus from Koyambedu. They charge exorbitantly high rates for this short distance like Rs 390 for Non-AC bus and Rs. 700 for AC bus. After lot of bargaining one agreed to take...

Yes. Government Volvo AC buses are also plying on two different routes to Pondicherry from Chennai. One is the most preferred and scenic route along the "East Coast Road", commonly called as ECR. The other one is via the "Grand Southern Trunk Road", commonly called as GST Road. All the government AC buses charge not more than 250 rupees. And the travel time will be around 3.30 hours.
