They started to snatch handbags, watches from the passengers who were just by the windows. According to the complaint from the passengers, the dacoits flew 'calmly' from the scene after looting from 5 reserved compartments. A couple from Sodepur in Kolkata, working in a multinational, were seriously injured when they tried to resist them. They were admitted to Malda Railway Hospital at night. The couple left for Kolkata in the morning with deep wounds on their hands and heads.
The passengers complained that though the raid has been gone for almost 25 minutes, none of the on duty RPF personnel from the train showed themselves. The train stood in Malda Town station for around 2 hours due to passenger agitation. Later it was withdrawn after the railway officials of Katihar division came and directed an investigation.
NEFR DRM (Katihar) Bhushan Patil said, "It's being inquired why the train was made to stop outside Eklakhi." And it's too being ordered for investigation by the RPF Super (Siliguri) Shyamal Bhattacharyawhy why none of the on- board Railway Police came to help the passengers. He told, "It's being found in which compartment the RPF men were during the looting. Punishment will take its course if presence of the fault is proved."
The passengers stated that at night time around 1230 am, the train suddenly stopped just before Eklakhi. Within 3 minutes, 30 men surrounded both sides of the number 2 to 6 of the reserved coaches. As the doors were closed, they attacked through the windows. The residents of Sodepur Kanailal Dutta and his wife Devjani were returning with their family from Darjeelig. Mr. Rajkumar, the son of Mr. Kanaillal told, "I saw waking up after hearing scream, 2- 3 men were trying to snatch my mother's bag. My father tried to resist but they dealt a blow with some sharp- edged weapon on his forehead. My mother also got a blow on the hand. Then they took the bag." Mrs. Devjani startled to describe the matter. She said, "Not only our compartment, but also in the adjacent ones were attacked in the same way. The passengers kept shouting 'dacoits'. But no police came on even shouting such for almost half an hour.
At 0115, when the train arrived at Malda Town, the couple were taken into railway hospital. 7 stitches were given to the forehead of Mr. Kanailal along with 5 to the left hand of her wife.
