The light tram service is envisioned as a feeder loop line for the Kochi metro, improving connectivity and patronage. The trams will also link the M.G. Road metro station with the Water Metro ferry terminal near the High Court. Each three-coach light tram can accommodate up to 240 passengers. These electric-hybrid trams can be fully recharged in just six minutes and are designed to be accessible for differently abled individuals. The cost of implementing a light tram network is significantly lower than a conventional metro rail system, estimated to be around one-fourth. Local manufacturing of the coaches could further reduce costs. The service is projected to enhance patronage for the existing Kochi metro network, including the Aluva-M.G. Road-Thripunithura phase-one corridor and the proposed Kakkanad extension. Feasibility studies are also being considered for similar light tram services in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode.
