It is home for the ONE & ONLY idol in India in which one can see both Hari (Vishnu) & Har (Shiva). Hence the place got its name as Harihar. Harihar station falls in the Bangalore - Hubli main line.
The Harihareswara temple was constructed in Harihar on the banks of river Tungabhadra in 13th Century by the Hoysala Emperors. The 4ft. idol is a combination of Protector (Vishnu) and Destroyer (Shiva). The right half of the idol is Shiva with his Thrushul in his right hand and left half is Vishnu with his Chakra in his left hand. (See the pics).
