Do you plan to travel from mumbai to trivandrum all the way? I am asking because air ticket from mumbai to trivandrum is about Rs. 3800 (for a week later). 2A fare on this train is 2700. If you book online, another 100 will be added. So for 1000 more, you can reach trivandrum in 2 hours! Just my opinion!

It is surprising that there are no dedicated trains between Mumbai and Delhi apart from Rajdhani, Duronto, Garib Rath and Sampark Kranti some of which dont even have daily run. I mean, only Sampark Kranti has SL class which sees huge demand and waiting list. Railways should make Sampark Kranti daily. I wonder why they have not increased the frequency of this train although it is been running since more than a decade!

The name of this train should have never been changed. The name 'Frontier' evoked historical aspects and value of this train. All our folks who regularly travel on this train still call it Frontier Mail in our conversations!

It still runs upto Frontier of India, wagah border is just few kms from Amritsar! Frontier mail was a historic train and hence it should have been remained as Frontier Mail forever. Mumbai has several landmarks. Yet not a single train is named after any single landmark of Mumbai!

Why are you taking it so far dude? Is it necessary to include Pakistan in every discussion? It is our Frontier. What has Pakistan to do with it!

Just checked, a Mumbai Ahmedabad air ticket for Feb 23rd (Not much in advance) is Rs. 1500 which is less than Executive Chair Car ticket on Shatabdi and not a great deal more than CC or 3A or 2A on other trains. In the future, airlines will become more favorable for even short distances. In such a scenario, bullet trains whose tickets will be much costlier than Shatabdi will not be preferred. In my opinion, it is a waste to spend so much money on building Bullet train infrastructure. Look what E. Sreedharan of Konkan Railways & Delhi Metro fame has to say -> click here Your comments are welcome!

Hi, thanks for your point of view. It is good to debate positively. Let me contradict u on ur points.
1. As u say air fares wud increase from 1500 to 4500 over next few years. This may be true or may not be true. Because if u check the past, flying was unaffordable with high fares. With each passing day, air travel is getting more and more affordable.
2. Bullets trains wud not be used by those cost conscious passengers who prefer to travel by SL class today. They would still
...

prefer normal trains. Bullet train passengers wud be used by those who prefer to travel on Shatabdi, and upper AC classes. Business people will more and more prefer airlines as time passes.
3. If air fares are subject to exponential increase, we wont have 1500 fares today between mumbai and ahmedabad as it is seen today.
4. This is not about airlines replacing the railways. This is about spending lakhs of crores on something which won't be used by the masses. Instead, railways should use the money to improve and upgrade the existing railway infrastructure which is creaking at best!
5. Yes, Bullet train is undesirable because Indian railways is always short of funds for quite important peojects like giving rail connectivity to areas with no rail connectivity at present. Mumbai and Ahmedabad are already well connected by rail, road and air. So spending a huge amount on an already strong sector which has ample capacity is injustice to those that don't even have rail connectivity!
To conclude, in my humble opinion, Railways shud use precious financial resources efficiently n smartly instead of putting into something for mere show off to show that India can have bullet trains!

From the place I live in Mumbai, it costs me the same to take a taxi to travel to either railway stations like borivali/andheri or airport... Traveling to BCT, CST or LTT will cost even more for me. And I dont think anyone who can afford bullet train ticket will mind taxi fare!

I had even got an air ticket from Mumbai to Kolkata for Rs. 1400 on Spicejet which is such a deal... U reach in 2.5 hours paying less than 2A or 3A fares! We don't need bullet trains at all!

Yes, it is less costly to build airports as you just need land for 2 airports at both ends. For railways, land is required for the whole route and then there is cost to maintain the infrastructure. Building elevated route increases the cost too. Such projects in India are known to get delayed and their budget increase exponentially due to bureaucracy & red tape. As more and more people start traveling by air, air travel will become more and more affordable as economies of scale comes into picture. Right now, no country apart from China is looking to build costly Bullet Trains because it is not worth in this age of low cost air travel. Even China is facing problems with bullet trains!
