May 23 2016 (07:05)   Hosapete-Kottur direct train to be a reality soon

The two-decade old dream of having a direct train service between Hosapete and Kottur has at last been realised.
Arun Kumar Jain, manager, Hubballi division of South Western Railway, on Saturday inspected the track and gave the green signal to ply a goods train.
The goods train will start plying between Hospapete, Kottur and Harihar. A passenger train would be announced later.
Technical glitch

“The track is ready and plying of a goods train will commence from this month-end or from June 1. We will consider plying a passenger train in the coming months after clearing a technical glitch between the Tungabhadra Dam station and Gunda Road,” he told The Hindu over phone from Hubballi on Sunday.
The Hosapete-Kottur-Harihar track would help hinterland development by providing rail connectivity to the agriculturally predominant taluks of Ballari district on the Bengaluru-Hubballi main line.
Transportation of coal
Apart from linking east coast (Visakhapatnam) with the west coast (Mangalore port), the line will facilitate transportation of coal, iron ore and fertilizer, besides passenger trains towards Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga.
The Hosapete-Kottur meter gauge line was laid during the British period in the early 19th century to transport cotton from Kottur.
Passenger trains were also plying on the metre gauge between Hosapete and Kottur till 1994 until the project uni-gauge system was introduced in the country.
In 1995, C.K. Jaffer Sherrief, as the then Minister for Railways, laid the foundation stone for not only conversion of the track in to broadgauge but also extending it up to Harihar in Davangere district.
But because of various reasons, including the lack of interest evinced by the members of Parliament representing Ballari and Davanagere districts, the project progressed at a slow pace leading to cost escalation.
Passenger train
In March 2014, Mallikarjun Kharge, the then Railway Minister, flagged off a passenger train between Harihar and Kottur only as the line between Kottur-Hosapete was not fit for passenger train movement, because of the steep gradient between Hosepete and Gunda Road, sources said.

According to SWR or in general IR. Freight trains move very slowing in ghats at snail pace, sometime they move back and forth to take pick up. Couple of years back, i saw one one scenario near dudhsagar, they were putting sand on track, i asked the driver who was taking some bio-fertilizer train from goa to ballari, why are you doing this. He replied to provide extra grip on wheels, for freight trains to pull loads and move forward instead of skidding back, while going up the hill from Kulem at Elevation: 77 m to Castle rock at Elevation: 585 m above sea level. Freights take almost takes 3-4 times more time than normal passenger train in ghats. So if we calculate one freight train can restrict 3 pax trains in ghat for around 5-6 hours. Hope after doubling this improves and we can see few more pax trains.

But Bro...Now is freight trains running in that section? If the answer is no....then SWR must be really crazy in getting the UBL-ANKOLA line...So they are not allowing passenger trains in this section...

Even though mining is temporarily banned in KA and Goa. SWR is hoping ban will get lift soon and freights will be back (main business of swr), because of which they don't want to change the ghat policies. But i agree with your point to start 1 - 2 passenger train, as specials at-least, they can decide later for continuation.... They really gone crazy, UBL-ANKL work again started in full fledged mode.. Kalghatgi station building is under construction now, they may finish non ghat section early till Yellapura. and start a passenger train Hubballi-Yellapura just like Harihar-Kotturu pass train and take time for Yellapura-Ankola ghat section which will have tunnels and bridges.

Feb 17 2016 (12:15)   Year Later, Baiyappanahalli Railway Station Plan Finalised

BENGALURU: After nearly a year of deliberations, the final plan to transform Baiyappanahalli railway station into a third coaching-terminal for Bengaluru is ready and okayed. This assumes significance since it could help decongest the City railway station and Yeshwantpur railway station when completed.
Speaking to Express, a top South Western Railway official said the plan envisages having 13 railway lines in the station. “It will have four platform lines, two run-through lines (where trains, particularly goods trains can rush through non-stop), five stabling lines and two pitlines.” Stabling lines are where trains are stationed when not running and pitlines are used to carry out maintenance of coaches.
Foot-Over-Bridges will also be constructed here, which would connect all the four platforms of the station. The total available space at the station is 50,000 square metres. “The station will also have enough parking space to house 200 cars and an equal number of vehicles,” the official said.
The Railway budget of 2015-2016 had sanctioned a sum of Rs 114 crore for developing the station. “We will call for tenders now. Work will start in May this year and will be completed within three years,” he said.
When completed, trains bound to Tamil Nadu can terminate here and this would take a huge load off the city railway station, the official added. A total of 35 trains pass through this small station off Old Madras Road presently.
On the help sought from the Chinese, the official said the design and development of the station will be their responsibility. “Their job is to transform Baiyappanahalli into a world-class railway station. Our focus is to ensure the running and maintenance of trains here,” he said.
When asked about the reasons behind nearly a year’s time taken to finalise the plan, the official said that much planning goes into readying a coaching terminal. “Much study goes into it, various departments are involved and many experts need to be consulted. So many inputs are taken before the final plan is ready,” he stated.

Demands galore for Union Budget 2016-17
Pre-budget discussion held in Hubballi
Hubballi: Train service between Hubballi-Mangaluru and Hubballi- Varanasi, relaxation in tax exception for both salaried employees and senior citizens, special financial package for Mumbai-Karnataka region, and demand for a special skill training centre in the North Karnataka region were a few of the 'requirements' of the region that would be placed before Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be included in the Union Budget 2016-17.
demands were made at a pre-budget discussion programme called by Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi in Hubballi on Sunday.
Several businessmen, industrialists, educationalists, doctors and chartered accountants shared their opinions about the budgetary reforms and train services that are required for the region, but no farmers were invited for this discussion.
Karnatak Chamber of Commerce & Industries former president Madan Desai asked the government not to increase the railway passenger tariff and in contrary decrease the fright charges of goods service due to falling crude oil price.
The KCCI also wanted the 'nomenclature' of the Hubballi-Ankola railway line be changed so that it can be projected to connect the ports on Arabian Sea with Bay of Bengal.
Mr Desai wanted increase in tax exemption of senior citizens to ` 7.5 lakh, as the cost of living has increased.
Skill institute
Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) in-charge Vice-Chancellor C S Patil wanted the Union government to set up a Skill Development Institute in Dharwad district, which can cater to the needs of North Karnataka youths. He also asked the NDA government to announce special package for irrigation and drinking water for the region under Mahadayi project.
He said, the Union government should give incentives to harness solar energy in Mumbai-Karnataka region.
A senior citizen M V Kamari urged that a 'defence park' be established in the Mumbai-Hubballi economical corridor, while chartered accountant O V Gadag asked the Centre not to levy any taxes on the co-operative societies and charitable trusts.
He also requested for an e-filing portal or virtual income tax office, for filing of income tax at the income tax office.
Health care
Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara Medical College Director Niranjankumar asked the Union government to strengthen the primary health centres across the country, and to increase expenditure on health care from the current 1.3 per cent of the GDP.
He also asked for increase in insurance scheme for poor, which helps in getting better treatment for them.
IMSR Director Prasad Roodgi, suggested installing of 'digital class theatre', where hundreds of students can benefit from learning trough online content that are generated across the world.
University of Agriculture Science, Dharwad representative Rajeendra Phodar asked Mr Joshi to exert pressure on MHRD to release funds for the completion of several half-completed building at the University.
Joshi's response
Pralhad Joshi said, he would put forward these requirements in front of PM, FM, and railway minister for consideration.
He said, the railway doubling work has begun and by 2019-20 the entire Hubballi-Bengaluru track will be double line. Similarly, the Hosapete-Goa railway doubling is almost complete.
People can give their representation and demands to be included in the Union budget at the MP's office before January 29.
'Make representation'
Leader of Opposition in Assembly Jagadish Shettar lamented that the State government is not making any representation to Union Railway Minister regarding the pending project.
He said, it is the responsibility of the State government to highlight the pending projects and get them sanctioned.
