Swab collection units were set up at various entry points such as Majestic, Yeshwanthpur, and K R Puram
Bengaluru: Anticipating possible spur in the infection rate with the influx of returnees after unlocking exercise, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had deployed testing units in crowded areas such as bus stands, railway station and labour camps at construction sites.
While the testing units were deployed at all designated areas, the one at the Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (KSR) Railway station witnessed technical glitches resulting in the let go of the returnees without testing.

collection units were set up at various entry points such as Majestic, Yeshwanthpur, and K R Puram. Tests are also being conducted at Nayandahalli Checkpost, Nice Road Checkpost, and Attibele Checkpost.
Rajendra Cholan, Special Commissioner (Health) BBMP said, "Testing units have been sent to all the railway stations around Bengaluru. We are also coordinating with Deputy Commissioners of the neighbouring districts and collecting samples of those entering Bengaluru at the borders."
Dr Suresh, Health officer of Bommanahalli and in charge of testing the returnees to Bengaluru said, " We have deputed 46 swab collection teams for this purpose. Apart from these entry points, test camps have also been set up in all the major roads.”

Amid the preparations, testing at KSR Railway station ran into trouble as the BBMP personnel tried in vain to establish a connection with the centralised server for registering of testing citizens. Due to the repeated error messages, the personnel were unable to process any testing. "We are unable to feed the details of the people and generate OTP. The server is not taking any data and repeatedly showing error messages.
Due to this, we are unable to test and sitting idle without testing anybody," explained personnel while showing the tablet flashing the error alert. However, Dr Suresh claimed that testing at all the railway stations was smooth. "We have not received any complaints. But will check if there were any issues," he clarified.
According to the data made available by the BBMP, the 46 teams had collected 3,337 samples as of June 15 evening. However, the number of samples collected is set to increase even further. “Looking at the number of travellers, we are expecting the teams to collect nearly 7,000 samples every day from these points,” said another senior BBMP official. Additionally, BBMP has also asked the apartment associations, Resident Welfare Associations (RWA), PG owners, and hoteliers to alert them of any persons who have returned to Bengaluru. “Mobile testing teams will be sent to test such people,” Cholan said.

The head of a voluntary research and advocacy organization has urged the BMRCL not to start any work on the Silk Board-KR Puram-airport metro corridor and divert the resources to improve health infrastructure instead.
In a letter to BMRCL Managing Director Rakesh Singh, Sandhya Balasubramanian stated that the Centre’s decision to approve the project on April 21, amid a raging pandemic, was baffling due to its “misplaced priority”.
Listing the major problems being faced by the city, the state and the Centre, she said Bengaluru was at the epicenter of the pandemic with a high number of

deaths and infections. The black fungus infection has only made things worse.
Noting that a shortage of oxygen, testing kits, ICU beds, vaccines and even crematoriums have created panic among people, the letter called upon the government to prioritize welfare. “Life is more precious than transport infrastructure; prioritizing the metro project by tree-felling over public health sends a wrong message to the citizens,” it said.
Requesting a status quo on Phases 2A (Silk Board to KR Puram) and 2B (KR Puram to Kempegowda International Airport), she called for preparing a fresh detailed project report and making a revised comprehensive traffic assessment by taking into account the impact of the work-from-home regime.

The total completion cost of the project is Rs 14,788.101 crore
The Centre on Tuesday approved Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 2A (Central Silk Board Junction to K.R. Puram) and Phase 2B (K.R. Puram to Airport via Hebbal Junction) of total length 58.19 km.
The total completion cost of the project is Rs 14,788.101 crore, Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal told reporters.

taken in the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Implementation of the project will provide the much needed additional public transport infrastructure to Bengaluru, Goyal said after the cabinet meeting.
The project will streamline the urban transportation system in Bengaluru, which is stressed due to intensive developments, increase in the number of private vehicles and heavy construction in the city, putting stress on travel infrastructure and industrial activities. This will provide the people a safe, secure, reliable and comfortable public transport, a statement from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs said.

at major railway stations over Bengaluru Division, the rates of platform tickets have been enhanced from Rs 10 to Rs 50 at KSR Bengaluru, Yesvantpur, Bengaluru Cantonment and Krishnarajapuram," it said.
The South Western Railway's Bengaluru division cited the surge in Covid-19 cases in second wave amid the starting of train services in a phased manner as the reason behind the increase in the ticket rates.

BENGALURU: While South Western Railway (SWR) is planning to operate new trains and shift some existing ones to the new coaching terminal at Byappanahalli railway station, it may not be used much due to poor accessibility.
Activists say passengers may use the nearby KR Puram railway station instead to board or alight from trains stopping there.
Once overlooked, KR Puram — located at the junction of Old Madras Road and Outer Ring Road — has gained more patronage after the IT boom.

trains to places like Bangarpet, Chennai, Ernakulam, Howrah and Patna halt here. However, SWR has failed to upgrade it.
Karnataka Railway Vedike founder member KN Krishna Prasad said: “Passengers travelling to places like Chennai/Katpadi and Bangarpet may use KR Puram station. But it doesn’t have adequate facilities.”
Many passengers say the station, which has four platforms, has been neglected for a long time.
A reality check by TOI revealed that water was not available in most taps while toilet facility has been provided only at platform 4.
A narrow foot overbridge connects platforms 1 and 4. There are no escalators or lifts.
Passengers, including senior citizens and differently abled, have to climb stairs to get from one end to another through the FOB.
Roofing is also provided only at platform 4.
Apart from this, encroachments like illegal shops have sprung up in and around the station premises.
“Work on the FOB connecting the railway station and the proposed Metro station should be expedited. BMTC is dropping passengers on the roadside as the junction width has shrunk after construction of the hanging bridge," Prasad said.
"The FOB connecting platforms is narrow like those at Mumbai's suburban stations and may even cause stampedes during peak hours when people carry luggage,” he added.
Rajiv S, a resident of Marathahalli, said: “This station is chaotic, especially during peak hours. It’s high time it was redeveloped. There is no autorickshaw prepaid counter here and some auto drivers often prevent cabbies from entering the station premises to pick up or drop passengers.”
Ranjini D, a passenger said: “There is no proper lighting or water facility at this station. There is only one toilet for all platforms and it is poorly maintained. Most of the display boards are dysfunctional. Waiting for trains is a problem, especially during rain, due to lack of roofing.”
Bengaluru divisional railway manager Ashok Kumar Sharma said there are no immediate plans to redevelop the station.
“We are in the process of increasing the platform width. Many people who are unable to access the new terminal could use this station for trains passing through this section”.
