The railway goods shed at Ariyalur, where loading of cement in bulk quantities is done, saw paddy loading for the first time on Monday.
About 1,100 tonnes of paddy was loaded by Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation in 21 freight wagons for transportation to Hosur for hulling, said a senior railway official here.
The goods shed in Tiruchi division has been witnessing cement loading in large quantities over the years due to the presence of major cement units in the district. However, this is for the first time that paddy has been

loaded from the goods shed for transportation by rail, said the official.
Usually, paddy and rice are loaded from various goods sheds in the fertile delta region, which falls under the Tiruchi division, and transported by rail to different destinations within the State.
Paddy is loaded at Mannargudi, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Kumbakonam, Peralam, Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore. It is sent for hulling at Polur, Royapuram in Chennai, Chettinad near Karaikudi, Namakkal, Hosur and Dharmapuri.
Rice is also transported from the delta region to places such as Namakkal, Vriddhachalam and Katpadi. Loading of paddy in Tiruchi division in the current fiscal up to June is 2.56 lakh tonnes, the official added.

rise in freight revenue by 24 %. The revenue earned through freight loading was ₹84.78 crore in the first two months of the current fiscal, while it was ₹ 68. 5 crore during the corresponding period of the previous year. In addition to other commodities, Tiruchi division handled new traffic by loading two rakes of caustic soda from Chinna Babu Samudram falling under its limits. This new traffic fetched an additional loading of 4,412.8 tonnes in the month of May.
Sustained efforts by the division enabled in loading 15 rakes of clinker from two major private cement plants - one functioning at Ariyalur and the other at Ichchangaadu. While one consignment went to Kharagpur in West Bengal, the other was transported to Thalayuthu near Tirunelveli. The other commodities loaded in the division in the current fiscal were coal, cement, food grains, iron ore and fertilisers, a release issued by the Tiruchi Railway Division here said, adding that the division continued to remain the highest in respect of freight loading in the Southern Railway zone.

The rail electrification will facilitate elimination of diesel traction. Fle photo for representation.
The rail electrification of the 44 Route Km (RKM) Kollam-Punalur and 124 RKM Palakkad-Pollachi-Palani corridors are to be completed along with the 673 RKM km targeted by Southern Railway during 2021-22.
This is part of the ambitious goal to switch over to ‘Green Railways’ by electrifying the balance Broad Gauge (BG) routes by December 2023 to achieve 100 % electrification of BG routes.
The

other BG stretches to be completed are Madurai-Manamadurai (45 RKM), Nagapattinam-Velankanni (10 RKM), Salem-Talaivasal (73 RKM), Pollachi-Podanur (38 RKM), Thalaivasal-Vridhachalam (66 RKM), Tiruchchirappalli-Pudukottai-Karaikudi (90 RKM), Karaikudi-Manamadurai-Virudunagar (124 RKM) and Manamadurai-Ramanathapuram (62 RKM).
The rail electrification will facilitate elimination of diesel traction resulting in significant reduction in its carbon footprint and environmental pollution. In addition, a cent % electrification by 2023 would result in annual savings of ₹ 14,500 crore for railways.
In the 5,080 RKM of Southern Railway, 3,529 RKM accounting for about 70 % has been electrified till March 2021. As envisaged in National Rail Plan & Vision 2024, Southern Railway has also geared up to complete electrification of all the BG routes under it by December 2023. As much as 187 RKM of electrified lines were commissioned in 2020-21. As of May 2021, 71 % of the BG network has been electrified. Instead of making available funds from the budget, electrification is now being financed through Extra Budgetary Resources. Around ₹21,000 crore is expected to be incurred for completion of electrification.
Besides making an environmentally friendly mode of transport, the railways can go for haulage of heavier freight trains and longer passenger trains with high haulage capacity of Electric Locomotives leading to increased throughput. Increased sectional capacity by eliminating detention on account of traction change and reduced operating and maintenance cost of Electric Loco are the benefits from the switch over.

Just as the city observed the 118th anniversary of the first passenger train chugging into Kochi on July 17, the Old Railway Station, where the train arrived and later saw the arrival of other historical figures like Mahatma Gandhi, remains in ruins.

Concerted attempts by vested interests to divest the 40-acre prime property located behind the High Court of Kerala for alternative use, were foiled by NGOs and heritage enthusiasts. “It is shocking that attempts to renovate the station building and lay fresh tracks and other infrastructure did not yield much

results, despite visits by Union Railway Ministers and dozens of senior officials,” said K.P. Harihara Kumar, general convenor of Old Railway Station Vikasana Samiti.

The station was realised during the tenure of Rama Varma XV, then Maharaja of Kochi. It fell into disuse in the 1960s when the Ernakulam Junction and Town railway stations were commissioned. Attempts to revive the station by restoring rails and signals two years ago slowed down following the demand for an overbridge at Pachalam before restoring rail services. “A National Green Tribunal [NGT] order on the need to conserve the evergreen space having huge trees as it is, considering its proximity to Mangalavanam, further stymied efforts to revive the heritage station into a hub of suburban trains,” said a senior Railway official.

Similar plight awaits Cochin Harbour Terminus, another heritage station, located in Wellington Island. The proposal to extend a few passenger trains to the station to decongest the Ernakulam Junction station remains on paper.

Low patronage for trains like DEMU that began service from the station and lack of electric line owing to concern over the safety of aircraft taking off from the nearby naval airport were other hurdles.

The station, although renovated, will most likely remain unused until an overbridge is built at Vathuruthy, replacing the level-crossing, railway sources said.

The proposal to convert 100 acres of railway land in the Ponnurunni-Kathrikadavu area to build an integrated railway station-cum-coaching terminal, too remains on paper. Meanwhile, tracts of land in the periphery have been encroached upon.

Realising the project will go a long way in augmenting reception capacity for trains in the city. This will in turn speed up train movement in the central Kerala region, officials said.
