Nov 16 (22:56)   Carmelaram level crossing widening project gets a boost

Bringing relief for commuters suffering from traffic snarls on both sides of the railway level crossing at Carmelaram, the railways is likely to start work on widening the crossing in December.
Bengaluru Central MP P C Mohan said the work was delayed as the BBMP dragged its feet on the railways’ proposal. Mohan released Rs 16 lakhs under the MP’s Local Area Development fund to begin the work immediately.
Mohan met Divisional Railway Manager R S Saxena and handed over the letter releasing the funds. “The DRM assured him that the work on widening
the road will commence in the first week of December,” a release from Mohan’s office said.
Citizens have held several protests and online campaigns urging the railways to eliminate the level crossing on the key road connecting the IT hubs. Those rushing to office in the morning and evening peak hours are regularly forced to wait at the crossing as it is also the time for peak rail traffic.
In August 2018 SWR asked the BBMP to widen the road, dismantle the existing gate lodge and reconstruct the new gate lodge towards Byappanahalli. However, the BBMP failed to respond and did not release the required funds for the Railways to take up the work.
Speaking to DH, Mohan said the railways is also planning to take up the road overbridge project to eliminate the level crossing. “If they had taken up the project without widening the road, it would have been a nightmare for commuters who get stuck at the bottleneck,” he said.
BBMP in-charge Chief Engineer B S Prahlad did not respond to DH despite repeated attempts.

Better to widen the crossing, though over a long term period, it is good to have an overbridge. Now with land aquisition going to start and doubling work to commence in the BYPL-HSRA stretch, the demand for overbridge will also gather full momentum

Can we make a list of the railway lines where even after gauge conversion to broad guage ,some part of the line has been left without conversion and new
line alignment has been built to avoid that . The older gauge is still present there as they were not changed to broad gauge..One of the following section include :
Lower haflong railway line.

The Siliguri Junction - Bagdogra section can be added to this category. After the gauge conversion of the Kishanganj-Naxalbari-Siliguri junction route, the MG line between Siliguri Junction and Bagdogra was retained to run chartered heritage services. The MG line now runs as a dual gauge track on the broad gauge route.

Did Shamatgunj ever see passenger traffic?
It was opened as a goods shed in the 1900/1910's.
Timetables from 1957,1977, 1992 do not show it as a passenger station. In fact, the Izzatnagar-Shamatgunj section does not show up in any timetables till 1999 ( the ones I have) .
In Lok Sabha debates from 1990, it was mentioned that it was a
goods shed.

Shahamatganj served BE as a terminal for quite a long....
Infact Shahamatganj has 2 diversion just back of Ayub Khan crossing...
The yard was very large and wagons were loose shunted..
While the other one lead to a 2 PF terminal station...even washing line are available...earlier it's only used for good but being situated in the heart of city..trains towards PBE originated from while
those towards MTJ and KGM/RMR originated from Bareilly City only

Could you give some rough time when it operated as a passenger station? I am curious to know, as the line and the station do not show up in the 1957, 1978, 1983, 1991, 1992 and 1999 NER timetables that I have.
The line was opened as Bareilly grain siding on April 1st, 1894. However all the literature I could access only describes Shamatganj as a goods station or a goods workshop and I haven't found any mention of passenger services from the station at least till 1950 (and no mention in the timetables mentioned above).
was under the impression that it was a goods station like Shalimar (Calcutta) which also had platforms and other structures for a long time but was only a goods station with no passenger traffic for many years.
