CHANDIGARH: A new platform number 4 will be constructed and the length of present existing three other platforms will be increased for increasing the capacity of British-era Kalka railway station. The site for construction of the new platform has been selected and construction work would start soon. Sources said the length of three platforms including 1, 2 and 3 is being enhanced for increasing capacity of lining up the train coaches. Currently, merely 16-17 coaches can be lined up on the railway track linked with the platform, and railway employees preferred to abandon some of the coaches of all the trains, going to Kalka, at Ambala and Chandigarh railway stations. Divisional railway manager, Ambala, Dinesh Kumar, said, "Once length of the platform along with the tracks increases, 24 coaches would...

be easily lined-up at all platforms. The upcoming platform number-4 will have the capacity of 24 coaches. This work would also aid the Kalka-Delhi Shatabdi, Kalka-Hawra and Jammu Tawi-Kalka trains." Railway officers clarified that these modification will not effect and increase the capacity of world famous Kalka-Shimla toy train, which runs on UNESCO protected 98km-long Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge. Sources in Kalka railway station said that installation work of signals on the upcoming platform number-4 has been started and signals have been increased at all three existing platforms. Budget has been also sanctioned for construction work and partial payment has been released to Ambala railway division. This railway station is the northern terminus of Delhi-Kalka line and the starting point of UNESCO world heritage site.
