Both cities were selected at the same time for the project
Two recent events will give a perspective of where Coimbatore, one of the major industrial hubs of the State, stands when it comes to having a mass transportation project: one, on June 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated metro rail service in Kochi; two, on May 28 this year, Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani said in Coimbatore that the State Government would start metro rail work in Coimbatore next financial year.
Coimbatore and Kochi became eligible for a metro rail project at
the same time when the Central Government announced sometime in 2010 that tier-two cities with around two million population were eligible to the mass transport system.
Eligible cities
In the list of eligible cities, Coimbatore was the only city from Tamil Nadu and Kochi was below Coimbatore. But the Kerala city had gone ahead and completed the project, thanks to the Kerala Government lapping up that announcement, said V. Eswaran of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, who had been fighting for the project for the city.
The failure for letting down the city squarely rested with the District Administration and State Government, consumer activist K. Kathimathiyon charged.
In these seven-odd years, the government had not even conducted a feasibility study, let alone engage a consultant to prepare a detailed project report.
Mono rail
Even as the Kerala Government went about laying the foundation and erecting pillars, the Tamil Nadu Government said mono rail, not metro, would suit Coimbatore the best.
Following the government’s announcement, the Coimbatore Corporation Council too passed a resolution to that effect.
The move came in for criticism as Mr. Eswaran and a few others questioned the rationale for suggesting mono rail. “On what basis did the Corporation and government say mono rail. Did they conduct a study?”
The mono-metro debate settled in favour of the later only a year or two later when the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry flew in ‘Metro Man’ E. Sreedharan, who said, for a radial city like Coimbatore, metro rail was more suited.
Thereafter, nothing much happened.
This inaction had cost the city dearly, chamber president Vanitha Mohan rued. The city’s development had stagnated as investments would be hard to come by without better infrastructure.
Transport infrastructure
With city roads choked and vehicle numbers growing exponentially, Coimbatore was badly in need of transport infrastructure development. But sadly, the administration had let down people on a project that was completely doable.
Activists and industry associations here want the government to start the project and complete it on a war footing.
