Nine years since Pune railway yard was remodelled, it is set to be refurbished again — this time to increase the length of all platforms. Officials believe extending the length of the platforms will help in increasing frequency and operation of trains with more than 20 compartments.
The project, costing approximately Rs 50 crore, is expected to be completed by March next year, senior officials of Pune rail division told TOI.
"The Pune yard, which includes station platforms, tracks, maintenance and berthing of both passenger as well as goods trains, was remodelled in
2009. Now, the project of remodelling has been taken up yet again and work is set to start soon," Pune divisional railway manager (DRM) Milind Deouskar, said.
The official said that one of the most important aspects of the project was to extend the length of platforms so that trains with 20 or more compartments could be accommodated in all platforms. "The other aspect is speed of trains. There is a 10 kmph speed restriction on trains in Pune section, mainly due to double diamond crossing tracks. Remodelling will include many aspects, including easing tracks of the present criss-cross system, which will increase speed of trains," another official pointed out.
Deouskar added that the extension of the platform at the Pune Junction was very important. "The engineering scale plan of the project has already been made. Currently, only platform number 1 can accommodate a full-length train. Also, platform number 3 can accommodate 23-coach train. Other than these two platforms, the rest cannot accommodate long trains, which, many a times, results in train delays. If two platforms are occupied, an incoming train having many compartments has to wait for long. With the extension of platforms, we are sure things will ease up," the senior official pointed out.
As Pune station is currently unable to accommodate goods trains, they are sent to Shivajinagar station. "Most accidents occur due to trespassing, which is illegal. People who tend to trespass see a train at a distance think that they will able to cross the track by that time it arrives. However, criss-cross tracks are such that the train comes near in no time and people get run over. There is a need to simplify it and this too will come under the project. With the up and down lines being extended, it will be easier to manage trains and also new trains with more than 20 compartments can come to the station. The ground work is expected to begin soon," Deouskar said.

@all: At this time, the PNR Forum is functioning again, albeit at a greatly reduced volume and efficiency. Refreshing PNRs is a very cumbersome affair. We may expect this to end as well, eventually, as the Govt. tightens these controls further. At IRI, we CANNOT waste any more time on this fruitless...
