Apr 14 (15:08)   Mumbai: 9 old FOBs on Central Railway route to be demolished

Giving the Mumbai train commuters another piece of bad news, the Central Railway on Saturday said they're demolished the old foot over bridges (FOBs) in at least 9 railway stations. This will lead to a lot of chaos on the route. Almost 45 lakh people use the local trains daily in Mumbai. The number has recently increased by 2 lakh, frequently leading to congestion.
According to sources in the Central Railway, the FOBs listed for dismantling are in Diva, Kurla Kasaiwada, Bhandup, Mulund, Govandi, Vidyavihar, Vikhroli, Tilaknagar and Wadala stations. "These FOBs have become old and have been identified for immediate shut down. That is the reason we will dismantle them and build new ones," said a CR official on condition of

anonymity.
As of now, the CR have called for tenders for dismantling these 9 FOBs at a cost of around Rs 3.69 crore. The problem could escalate as the demolition work will be carried out in next four months and extend during monsoon as well.
One of the reasons behind the Prabhadevi (back then Elphinstone Road) station stampede was that people allegedly didn't want to get wet in rains, that led to a massive chaos on the FOB.
The situation at these stations becomes miserable two trains arrive simultaneously on adjascent platforms, leading to confusion and crowd. The FOBs also have been bearing the pressure for years.
"We are not opposed to demolishing FOBs. However, there has to be an arrangement for the people to manoeuvre. The GRP and the RPF need to be requested to increase staff at these stations. It seems the railway authorities have got cold feet after the stampede at Elphinstone Road and two back-to-back bridges collapse at Andheri and CSMT. People have encountered such bad situations at Kurla, Jogeshwari stations over the last few days," said Subhash Gupta, president, Rail Yatri Sangh.
