I don't wish to get into politics but I'll say a thing that a Rail Minister knows lesser about Railways than a rail enthusiast. He/She is only concerned about leaving a 'legacy' and what better way to leave a legacy than introducing new trains and/or renaming stations/trains. Doubling/Tripling of tracks is the way forward but it takes time and no one has the foresight or patience to do that.
I have seen triple tracks running in KGP-HWH section [now built upto TATA I guess] and the EMU's there run smooth on...
more... time. Same with the sections upto Bardhaman. Tripling solves the issues of running passenger trains and takes a lot of load away. It also helps in freight movement. But one can only wish that IR did that on most routes.
Take example of LJN-STP route. It was converted to BG from MG recently. Sooner or later, it will need to be converted into dual tracks atleast. Then atleast make the stations compatible with dual lines from the beginning. That will reduce costs in the long run. But nope, IR just converted the tracks, did their alloted quota of job and slept. When in the future, it will need to be converted to dual tracks, EVERY station will need to be rebuilt again[atleast their second platforms] leading to time and cost overruns lately. This lack of foresight makes me think what the so called higher officers of Railways[think DRM or GM] actually do. Do they come into Railways without any enthusiasm for the same just to enjoy the luxuries of life and free AC travel?
