Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party leader Thota Narasimham today raised a strong demand for taking up the much-delayed Kakinada-Pithapuram railway main line construction project.
The Railways had kept the project on a "freezing mode" based on an "erroneous report" sent to its board, Narasimham told reporters here this afternoon.
The Lok Sabha member from Kakinada took up the issue with South Central Railway General Manager Vinod Kumar Yadav at a meeting organised with MPs from the state.
Narasimham

maintained construction of the Kakinada- Pithapuram main line was a decades-old dream and linked to sentiment of the people of the region.
"Suresh Prabhu, when he was Minister for Railways, granted Rs 50 crore in the first year and Rs 150 crore in the second year for the 21km project.
"The state government is ready to bear the land acquisition cost of the project but some officials sent a wrong report to the Railway Board that the Samalkot-Kakinada line is not viable. This has nothing to do with the Kakinada- Pithapuram line," he told reporters after the meeting.
The Railways officials did not consult him before submitting the report, he added.
"I have taken up the issue with Railways Minister Piyush Goyal and he promised to take up the work if there is no problem in land acquisition."
Meanwhile, the SCR General Manager informed the MPs that major works related to development of rail infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh were progressing at a brisk pace.
Works related to construction of a new line between Yerraguntla and Nandyal and electrification of the Wadi- Raichur-Guntakal section were completed during the current fiscal, Yadav said.
In addition, a small stretch in the Nadikudi? Srikalahasti and Kadapa?Bengaluru new line projects was also targeted for completion during the current fiscal, he added.
He said works on doubling and electrification of the Vijayawada-Gudivada-Bhimavaram-Narsapursection section were going on at a fast pace.
Works on construction of 58 Road-Over-Bridges (ROBs) and 138 Road-Under-Bridges (RUBs) were in progress, while construction of another 21 ROBs and 24 RUBs was under consideration, Yadav said.
The Tirupati railway station would be developed into a world-class facility at a cost of Rs 450 crore, the General Manager said.
A proposal to connect Kadapa and Kurnool towns in Rayalaseema with new the state?s new capital Amaravati was under active consideration, Yadav added.

Rajahmundry: The linking of district headquarters of Kakinada to the main railway line at Pithapuram is  progressing at a snail’s pace despite having acquired clearances more than one and a half decades ago. The project was cleared in 1998 for a distance of about 24 kilometres at a cost of Rs 40 crore in the rail budget during the NDA regime.
According to sources, the proposal for the linking Kakinada with Pithapuram on the Vijayawada-Vizag main route  has been  pending since the  1960s when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the prime minister of the country. But the execution of the project is yet to be started despite assurances by the state government  of  providing  the required land.
Several

reasons are being attributed for this delay. The first and foremost reason is said to be the  lack of efforts during the five year period from 1999-2004 when the Telugu Desam MP Mudragada Padmanabham was representing Kakinada.
The project was kept live in the period by sanctioning token amounts. Things started moving only after 2004 when the present union human resources development minister M.M. Pallam Raju was elected from the constituency. His efforts are said to have paid dividends to some extent during 2004-09. It is said that the efforts did not materialise in the form of execution of the project  as the railways changed  its policy of sharing costs of project with the states concerned.
Meanwhile, the project cost had escalated by two folds and by 2013 the cost had gone up to Rs120 crore.
The East Godavari Rail Passengers Association president and South Central Railway zonal rail users consultative committee member Y. D. Rama Rao  believes  that the execution of the project is being delayed despite the consent of  Parliament and Railway Board. Rao demanded immediate efforts by all concerned to expedite  the execution of the project which is likely to fulfil the five decade old aspirations of the people of the area.

On Sunday, the display board at the Visakhapatnam Railway Station, which informed that the Yesvantpur-Howrah Express would be ‘Indefinitely Late’, sums up the state of transportation in the rain- battered north coastal Andhra region.
At several places on the stretch between Rajahmundry and Ichchapuram, railway tracks were inundated with one to three feet deep flood water leading to cancellation of almost all passenger and over six express trains.
The trains that were operational were delayed by not less than two hours and a few were delayed by over 14 hours as authorities stopped

them to avoid untoward incidents.
The Prashanthi Express was stopped at Tadepalligudem for over three hours, the Visakhapatnam-bound Godavari Express was halted at Pithapuram, and Machilipatnam-Visakhapatnam passenger was stopped at Bikkavolu in East Godavari district. Falaknuma was stopped at Annavaram.
The information on the display board was updated every hour and so were the details about the delay. When asked about it, officials said that they could not be accurate about timings in situations like this as the train might be stopped till it is not considered safe to go ahead.
Vexed by such vague information, a few passengers rushed to the station superintendent’s office in the hope of getting additional information, but in vain. The station superintendent’s office was bustling with activity as passengers and officials were already in the cabin.
Swami, was waiting at the station for three hours to board a train to Vijayawada.
“I have a personal emergency and need to reach Vijayawada by night. As I got to know that even buses are not running, I will wait here till night to try my luck,” he said.
Equally interrupted was the road transportation in this region as the torrential rain either battered the roads or inundated them. The road connectivity between Andhra and Odisha has been completely suspended as the roads were washed away.
Most of the buses, both long distance and short distance, were cancelled till evening due to submerged roads.
An engineering student, Ganesh, was hoping to reach home before Diwali. “All trains to Warangal got cancelled. There is no information whether they would be operational tomorrow. I am unsure about whether buses will be able to wade through the flood water.” Ganesh too had decided to wait at the railway station till night.
Like Ganesh and Swami, scores of other passengers, stationed themselves in front of the display boards with the hope of reading the message that the train they have been waiting for has arrived.
Railway authorities tried to handle the situation with an Emergency Service Centre, an information desk to answer queries regarding the rescheduling or cancellation of trains.
However, officials at the desk were surrounded by a mob of people grappling with each other. With innumerable queries spanning from, “Will the train to Bhubaneswar be operational tomorrow?” to “Is there any alternative route to reach Warangal?” the officials either ended up nodding or not answering.

Disappointed:Some of the candidates waiting at Pithapuram Railway station on Sunday.-PHOTO.S RAMBABU
“I came from BPL family. I am working in a private firm in Secunderabad. Along with two of my friends, I am going to Vizag to attend Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) exam on Sunday. But fate is not in favour of us,”-said Jami Sarath Kumar of Kotabommali in Srikakulam district.
As a result of heavy rains, the Godavari Express from Hyderabad was stopped at Pithapuram railway station and Yeswanthapur-Bhuvaneswar Express was stopped at Tuni station. There were about 700 candidates in

both the trains who lost their chance to attend the written examination conducted by the RRC, Bhuvaneswar in Visakhapatnam. About 120 candidates from Hyderabad, Warangal, Khammam, Vijayawada, Guntur, West and East Godavari districts were proceeding to Visakhapatnam on Sunday to attend the written test between 11 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. This examination is being conducted to recruit trackmen, helpers and other category-4 permanent posts in the East Coast Railway Division.
“Generally, vacancies for trackmen and helper posts are filled once in 10 years and we are having great hope of getting at least one post among our 10 friends. But we could not make it as the rain played havoc on our lives,” said Ramnarayana, another aspirant from Vijayawada, who boarded Yeswanthpur-Bhuvaneswar Express in the early hours of Sunday.
Some of the candidates said they boarded the trains as water was flowing on roads. But the track was damaged between Duvvada and Narsingapalli and six trains were either stopped or diverted from different station in East Godavari district.
Yeswanthapur-Bhuvaneswar Express was halted at Tuni Railway station, Godavari Express from Hyderabad was stopped at Samalkot, Garib Rath from Hyderabad was stranded at Anaparthi. The Additional Railway manager has informed that Visakha Express was stopped at Tuni and Tirumala, Garib Rath were diverted from Rajahmundry station. He also said that the East Coast Railway, Visakhapatnam has diverted trains coming from Howrah, Bhubaneswar and Gowhati via Nagpur to Chennai, Trivandrum and New Delhi.
