BENGALURU: Delay in completing the shelter at Platform 1A is inconveniencing passengers, who are exposed directly to the searing sun. trains and one passenger train use the tracks running near this platform daily. The work has been entrusted by the Bengaluru Railway Division to the agency M V V Satyanarayana for a total cost of `1.61 crore. Passengers alighting and boarding the Guwahati Express, Hatiya Express, Bhuvaneshwar Express, Hamsafar Express and the Bengaluru Cantontment-Vijayawada Passenger need to make use of the platform. “The work needs to be completed here as soon as possible,” said Himanish Das, a businessman who was boarding the Humsafar Express originating at this platform to reach Dhamanagar in Tripura. Ravikant and his family were seated on one of the benches along the platform and partaking of their lunch. “Having a roof above will definitely help us in this heat. The structure has already been erected. I do not think putting the roofing will take much time,” he said.A vendor at the adjacent platform (Platform 1) said, “It is better now because the sun is out. You should have seen passengers alighting at 1A platform during monsoon. People were running with their luggages to escape getting drenched.” A railway source said some misunderstandings cropped up between the contractor and railway officials and this resulted in the delay in completion. However, a senior railway official said the contractor was overburdened with work. “He is involved in civil works at Hindupur railway station and had to complete the bridge connecting Metro and KSR railway station too. It is only due to other work that this project was getting delayed,” he said.He added that all works on the platform, including the roofing would be ready by April.
Double line will be available for Railways in 602 km in the Thiruvananthapuram Central-Kottayam-Mangaluru Junction corridor with the commissioning of the 8-km Kuruppantara-Ettumanur double line stretch soon. However, the 18-km corridor from Ettumanur to Chingavanam is the biggest challenge to throw open the 620-km double railway line from Thiruvananthapuram Central to Mangaluru Junction via Kottyam for traffic. The commissioning of the 8-km stretch after mandatory inspection and speed trial by K.A. Manoharan, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Bengaluru circle, on Friday and completion of the Ettumanur yard work will provide double line in 96 km between Kayamkulam Junction and Ernakulam via Kottayam. if the CRS gives the nod for the 8-km line, Railways will take up the work in the Ettumanur yard in April after getting the nod. Rail traffic along the doubled corridor will be possible only after April. Once the stretch is commissioned, 96 km of the 114 km from Kayamkulam to Ernakulam will become double line. Railways are knocking at the doors of the State government for the 3.5 hectares needed from the State for doubling of the Ettumanur-Kottayam and Kottayam-Chingavanam corridors. A top railway official told The Hindu that ₹90 crore was deposited with the State way back in 2017 as the cost of land acquisition. “We were told in January that year that the land would be handed over in May 2018 and it is unlikely to happen even in May 2019. The land acquisition is moving at a snail’s pace. It may take two years to complete the doubling works in the 18 km once the land is handed over by the State to us,” he added. As many as five bridges have to be constructed in the Ettumanur-Kottayam and Kottayam-Chingavanum corridors.
Mar 15 2019 (22:17) I still remember my frequent visit to Calicut/Kozhikode during 2006-2008, when doubling had just started there & locals were telling that it might never be completed thanks to the apathy from state govt & land acquisition issues in Kerala

At first place, it's a greatt acheivement that IR has been able to complete the Doubling of 602/620 kms on Kerala Trunk route... The remaining 18 kms stretch will also be completed in future... I still remember my frequent visits to Calicut/Kozhikode during 2006-2008, when doubling had just started there & locals were telling that it might never be completed thanks to the apathy from state govt & land acquisition issues in Kerala..
Agree to what you said. But i feel that so many stretches of doubling electrification has not had much impact in terms of reduction of travel time etc. Hoping that TVC divn and PGT division look into this aspect as well
NEW DELHI: The Railways Ministry has decided to shift the office of Chief Project Director (CPD), Railway Electrification from Bhubaneswar to Bengaluru. An order to this effect was issued by the Railway Board on Wednesday. As per the Board order, the projects operated by Bhubaneswar unit will be closed after March 31 and manpower either repatriated or transferred to other projects. The order that has the potential to turn into a political issue comes days after creation of South Coast Railway (SCoR) at Visakhapatnam by bifurcating East Coast Railway (ECoR). It says that the existing workload of Bhubaneswar office of CPD, Railway Electrification (RE) will be transferred to Danapur unit. The Bhubaneswar RE unit was established in 1996 and is independent of ECoR. part of Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE), manned by a General Manager ranked officer at Allahabad. The decision to shut down the Bhubaneswar unit may affect temporary staff while specialised personnel will be repatriated to their original units or shifted to Bengaluru. That’s not all, Railway Board has also decided to shut down the Kolkata RE office along with Bhubaneswar by March 31 and transfer existing workload of railway electrification unit at Secunderabad to Madras (Chennai) with immediate effect. Interestingly, though Secunderabad unit may be allowed to operate when bigger contracts are awarded, there is no such plan for Bhubaneswar. Established in 1996, the CPD, Bhubaneswar successfully handled the double decker electrification of 40-km Jakhapura-Daitari section in 2008 and was declared a model unit. It was also recently adjudged as best project office for completion of several projects on time. The decision to move the railway establishment from Odisha to Karnataka has raised many eyebrows even as the model code of conduct is in force. However, Indian Railways sources said such re-structuring is routine work. The decision to close the Bhubaneswar office was taken since all the major electrification projects are now handled by the ECoR’s Construction wing while RVNL also executes much of the work. Insiders say the move behind closing the office could be aimed at benefitting RVNL.
If you are a regular commuter on suburban trains from Chennai Central towards Gummidipoondi, a 30-minute delay in a journey of 45 minutes is the norm. But by June, things may change. Southern Railway will be able to operate services to North Chennai and suburbs in neighbouring Tiruvallur district and these will be on time if started from Chennai Beach instead of Central. This is because Southern Railway is in the last stages of laying two additional tracks between Chennai Beach and Attipattu in neighbouring Tiruvallur district through Korukkupet.Senior railway officials say they have to link the two existing lines to the new ones by syncing the points and signals. This will take around 20 days and can be done when the railway board gives permission for a block, an official said.Chennai divisional railway manager Naveen Gulati said moving the north-bound services from Central to Beach may improve punctuality and provide operational... more...
flexibility. However, there was no such proposal. “We will speak to stakeholders before proposing this as a large number of commuters take these trains from Central,” he told TOI.At present, 75 services are operated on the Chennai-Gummidipoondi-Sullurpeta northeastern line from Central and 13 from Beach. These suburban trains from Central’s suburban terminal have to turn eastward at Basin Bridge junction to move towards Korukkupet. Meanwhile, passenger trains from Central moving towards Arakkonam, Bengaluru and Mumbai have to turn westward at Basin Bridge. This X-shaped movement of trains delays services. As per operating procedure, express trains are given precedence and this holds up suburban services on the north-eastern line, a complaint commuters have been making for a decade now.Till now, railways has been unable to run more suburban services on the north-eastern line from Beach due to the bottleneck of only two lines on the Beach-Royapuram-Washermanpet-Korukkupet section. With the completion of the Beach-Korukkupet-Attipattu third and fourth lines, there will be space to run more suburban services. There will be two options: Either move the services from Central to Beach, or increase the number of services on the north-eastern line from Beach.“It is a high patronage section due to the thickly populated industrial areas in north Chennai and suburbs. Current services run full,” said a railway official.Gulati told TOI that once the project is completed, punctuality of suburban services will improve by five to 10 percentage points.
50 % of the Sulurpeta / Gummidipoondi to Chennai Moore Market services have to be diverted to Velachery /Tambaram / Chengalpattu so as to reduce the bottle neck at Basin Bridge junction. So ,it's very much beneficial to the passengers travel from Gummidipoondi to Velachery / Beach / Egmore/ TAMBARAM / Chengalpattu.
Cantt–Whitefield rail quadrupling to help commuters: MP On Saturday, D V Sadananda Gowda, Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, laid the foundation stone for quadrupling of the railway line between Bengaluru Cantonment and Whitefield at the KSR Bengaluru Railway Station. The minister also laid foundation stone for the six escalators coming up at the KSR Bengaluru Railway Station apart from inaugurating a fast-food unit at the Bengaluru Cantonment Railway Station during the same function. C Mohan, Member of Parliament, representing Bengaluru Central, who was present on the occasion said KSR Bengaluru is the biggest railway station in Karnataka. According to the MP, about 2,20,000 people use the station as 150 trains originate from the station everyday. “It is heartening to note that the railway station is being raised to international standards by providing modern amenities like escalators for the benefit of passengers,” the MP added. He also stressed that the quadrupling of the Bengaluru Cantonment-Whitefield section and the commissioning of auto-signalling along the section, will extensively help the people, especially those in Mahadevapura Assembly constituency where majority of the residents belong to the working class. As the commuters travelling between Cantonment and Whitefield are on the rise, the quadrupling and the auto-signalling of the rail section would help ease traffic congestion as well.
