Despite being the oldest station in the city, it lacks a few vital facilities putting passengers to hardship
BENGALURU: The Bengaluru Cantonment railway station has recently been handed over to the South Western Railway (SWR) Zone and major plans are in the offing for a complete overhaul of passenger amenities here. With the Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation (IRSDC) in the process of carrying out the formalities of winding down the establishment, the redevelopment of this station entrusted to it will be done by the Constructions Division of the Zone.
Speaking to The
New Indian Express, General Manager, SWR, Sanjeev Kishore said enhancing passenger amenities would be the priority. "We are conceptualising a detailed plan for it in consultation with other railway organisations, the state government and other Bengaluru-based organisations. Providing more facilities to public is our priority. The station will have two new platforms, better parking facilities and more space for movement of passengers inside and around the station," he said.
Cantonment has four platforms which of which 1, 1A and 2 can run full-length while platform 1B can run only the smaller sized MEMU/DEMU trains. Another official said, "The addition of new platforms will ensure that more trains can be run from the Division from here as well as the soon to be launched Sir M Visvesvariah Terminal in Baiyappanahalli."
A railway source based at the station said, "The major problem faced by passengers here is the acute shortage of parking space. People need to cross over from the bigger parking lot across to reach our station in the face of vehicles rushing. The ticket booking area is really cramped and the concourse area is small on the main entry side. The back entry too is congested and the roads leading from it are quite narrow. We want to improve all these aspects." It would be a major challenge due to the less space available, he added. "Since we border the main road, the traffic police needs to be roped in and road diversions need to be planned. Co-ordination with other projects like the exclusive Suburban Rail Terminal and the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project have to be done," he said.
Despite being the oldest station in the city, it lacks a few vital facilities putting passengers to hardship. "Passengers need to climb steep stairs to cross over between Platform 1 and 2 as there is no subway or any other form of connectivity. Many end up at the wrong platform and rush over to the other side when they hear about the arrival of the train. We have often noticed the disabled, women and particularly senior citizens struggle to cross between platforms."
Much improvement has happened over the years but there is still a lot of scope for improving quality and choice of food, waiting rooms and medical facilities, he added.

One of the many reasons behind the government not introducing enough trains is to avoid rail traffic as many of the key routes are still single tracked. However, the outlook looks positive this year, says railway officials. The Hindupur-Penukonda (38 km) doubling project is planned to be completed by the end of January. The Gadag-Hombal (16 km) line -- part of Gadag-Hotgi doubling project -- is planned to be completed by January too. Another project planned to be completed by January is the Nittur-Banasandra (22 km) line, which is part of Tumkur-Arsikere doubling project. The 50-km Haveri-Saunshi project, part of Hubballi-Bengaluru doubling project, is planned to be completed by February. The Londa-Suldhal (78 km) line is planned to be completed by March. The projects will give a huge boost to the connectivity across Karnataka. Aneesh Hegde, CPRO, South Western Railways told Mirror, “During April-December 2021, 231 route km of railway line were...
electrified in SWR. SWR tops in this duration in carrying out electrification among all the railway zones all over the country. Some of the major sections electrified between January and December 2021 were Yeshwanthpur-Tumakuru (64 km) and Baiyappanahalli-Banaswadi (4 km).”Till December 2021, SWR has loaded 31 MT of freight. “This was 20 per cent more than the freight loaded by SWR in the corresponding duration of 2021. The SWR also has recorded the highest ever loading of parcels. We have carried 251.77 ton of cargo and earned a revenue of Rs 88.92 crore. This corresponds to 140 per cent growth in parcel transportation over the same period in 2020. This includes Kisan special trains and special parcel cargo express trains. These initiatives have benefited farmers, retail traders and manufacturers of industrial and other components in Bengaluru and surrounding areas. They are able to transfer their produce to various parts of the country and reach newer markets,” Hegde said.Hegde said that the SWR had transported 171 rakes of automobiles from Bengaluru Div to various parts of the country from April – December 2021, which is the highest ever. Toyota, Kia, TVS are some of the key customers of SWR. Railways has emerged as a reliable transporter of choice. Toyota has shifted from road based transport to rail based transport. The doubling between Devarapalle-Hindupur (10.72 km) was commissioned on 15.12.2021 (Bengaluru Division). All over SWR from April-December 2021, 61km Doubling project has been commissioned, including Madgaon-Sanvordem (15 km) and Hombal-Hole Alur (36 km).

BBMP stated that members of the public can send their objections or suggestions within 10 days from Thursday.

In an indication that the Bengaluru suburban rail project is finally taking off, the Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka) Limited has sought the BBMP’s permission for clearing 661 trees to build the Baiyappanahalli-Chikkabanavara line (corridor 2).

a public notification on the tree-clearing proposal, the BBMP stated that members of the public can send their objections or suggestions within 10 days from Thursday. However, the civic body has not uploaded to its website the document containing details of the trees to be affected by the project.

The 25.57-km corridor, nicknamed ‘Mallige’, is the second of the four corridors of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project. It will have a total of 14 stations and an eight-kilometre-long elevated section.

K-RIDE had invited bids for the corridor in November and officials hoped to get the project pushed by the prime minister, who was to visit Bengaluru in December. But as the visit got cancelled so did the work on the ground.

A senior official said it might take two more months to process the bids. “We will open the financial bids by the end of January,” the official said. Once the contract is awarded, the successful bidder will have 27 months to complete the civil work.

Meanwhile, activists have been urging the government to prioritise the KSR Bengaluru-Devanahalli line (corridor 1), as suggested by the Railway Board. In its sanction letter, the board had stated that the 41.4-km line can be completed within three years while the other three corridors can be completed in six years.

Since the outbreak of the second wave of covid, many train services were suspended. Many of these services of the South West Railways will be resumed from today. The services include KSR Bengaluru City-Kolar-Bengaluru Cantonment, Bangarpet-Kolar-Bangarpet, Tumakuru-KSR Bengaluru. The following trains are extended with KSR Bengaluru city being the last destination Tumakuru-Yeshwanthpur, Arasikere-Yeshwanthpur,and Yeshwanthpur-Dharmapuri (including the paired trains).Madhav Banavara, a rail activist, said, “In order to avoid congestion at Yeshwantpur station, a few trains can be diverted to Bangarpet. This will benefit a majority of travellers staying in around KR Puram and Whitefield. The officials should also focus on upgrading the infrastructure for extension of these trains.”
