Newly appointed Central Railway (CR) general manager Akhil Agarwal plans to improve the punctuality of services following the five-hour rail roko on August 12.
CR's suburban punctuality has dropped to 82%. “Our main goal is improve timings. The Main line (long-distance) punctuality is 93%,“ said Agarwal.
A study carried out by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had revealed that the punctuality of trains dropped to 87.1% in 2014-15 from 95.8% in 2010-11.
2014-15, the percentage of trains running late by 10-15 minutes or more than 15 minu tes was 5 per cent each. In 201213, this figure stood at 3%,“ the CAG report mentioned.
Some officials said the CR network needs infusion of modern technology and rakes, without which punctuality could not improve.
A senior official said, “There are several rakes that are running on the system although their codal life of 25 years was over. Older rakes are prone to failure.“ “Level crossing gates on Harbour line and at Chunabhatti are responsible for the delay in operations,“ he added. CR officials said waterlogging during monsoon affects services. “Once trains had to stopped for several hours because of landslides at Parsik Hill. There has been an instance of burning garbage affecting the signalling system,“ added the official. Another view is that retrofitted rakes are prone to breakdowns. “Refurbished rakes, which were meant to run on 1500 KV direct current , have been retrofitted to make it compatible to run on 25 KV alternating current. It is jugaad technology that is bound to create problems,“ said a source.

WR also has issues with retrofit rakes. those have lower MPS and are more prone to failure, leading to punctuality loss.

New terminals in ANDHERI,BORIVALI, VASAI ROAD,KALYAN ,DIVA and PANVAL have to be provided .So as from these new terminals the trains have to be operated/extended ( like DELHI METRO CITY TERMINALS ) criss crossing Mumbai outer areas so as to reduce pressures in the existing terminals.
