The Railways on Friday announced it will introduce a faster Delhi-Mumbai Special Rajdhani Express service thrice in a week without flexi-fare from October 16.
"To fulfill the long overdue demand of passengers and to provide faster and convenient connectivity to passengers between two metros Delhi and Mumbai, Railways is introducing a new Special Rajdhani Express between Delhi and Mumbai from October 16," the Ministry of Railways said in a statement.
The Ministry also said that the train would be introduced on experimental basis for three months to gauge the response of the public

to a concept of flat increase in fares against existing flexi-fare.
Railways said that with the introduction of new Rajdhani Express, the travel time will be reduced from about 15 hours 50 minutes to 13 hours 55 minutes.
The train will stop at Kota, Vadodara and Surat railway stations only.
The railway officials said to increase the maximum speed of the train to 130 kmph, it will be hauled by two WAP5 locomotives of 5,400 horsepower each.
The transporter already runs two Rajdhanis and more than 30 mail or express trains between the two metro cities.
The Rajdhani Express train will comprise of one first AC, two 2AC and twelve 3ACs and one pantry car.
The fares of the new special train would be 20 per cent more than the base fares for existing New Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani without any flexi fare.
The fare for Special Rajdhani in 3rd AC and 2nd AC will be around 19 per cent cheaper than the maximum flexi fare of 3rd AC in Mumbai Rajdhani.
The Special Rajdhani Express will depart from Hazrat Nizamuddin on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 4.15 p.m. and would reach Bandra Terminus at 6.10 a.m next day. It will leave Bandra Terminus on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 4.15 p.m. and reach Hazrat Nizamuddin at 6.10 a.m.
On September 9, 2016, Railways introduced flexi-fare for premier trains - Rajdhani, Duronto and Shatabdi.
Under this, the base fare increases by 10 per cent with every 10 per cent of berths sold, subject to a prescribed limit. There was no change in the existing fare for 1AC and EC class of travel.
But on December 19, Railways started to provide 10 per cent rebate on any seat left vacant after the preparation of the chart.

Very curious to know as to how will the second loco operate. If at all there will be loco pilots in the second loco, what will there role be ?
Obviously since it will be behind the first loco, the drivers will not be seeing anything in the front as the view will be blocked by the first loco. What would their functions be ?

From January onwards, you won’t have to sleep with one eye open while travelling in a train. The Western Railway authorities have decided that either the August Kranti Rajdhani Express or the Mumbai Rajdhani will get CCTVs installed in their coaches next year.
According to The Indian Express, the advanced surveillance cameras will be installed for monitoring and surveillance purposes.
“All coaches of either August Kranti or Rajdhani Express will be fitted with a camera within three months. This could assure better security to passengers in the train,” AK Gupta, general manager, WR,

told the publication.
This comes after several cases of theft were reported on both the trains, on the Mumbai-Delhi route this year.

Udai Shukla, chief security commissioner, Railway Protection Force, WR, told The Indian Express, “We will install them in each coach of the train. There is a need for more than one camera in the coach as surveillance can be enhanced.”

Installing these CCTV cameras will also eradicate the need for personal monitoring by the RPF staff, who have been manning each trip of the Rajdhani trains.
So far, they’ve had to question travellers and railway officials in the train and rely on their answers to solve theft cases. The idea is to get rid of the interrogation process altogether so that no railway employee is affected by it.

Railways Earned Rs 1,400 Crore From Cancelled Tickets In 2016-17
Under the new rules, there is no option of any refund after the departure of a train.
New Delhi: The Railways earned Rs 1,400 crore from ticket cancellation charges in 2016-17, an increase of 25 per cent from the previous fiscal, the government today said.
The jump in the earnings may be attributed to the doubling of cancellation charges from November 2015.
"There has been an increase of approximately 25 per cent in the amount realised from cancellation of tickets in 2016-2017 over the previous year," Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
Charges are levied for cancellation of tickets as per the Railway Passengers (Cancellation of Ticket and Refund of Fare) Rules, 2015. The rules provide for refund of fare, subject to provisions.
"However, there is no provision to refund the cancellation charges so recoverable under the Rules," said Gohain.
The minister also said the South-Central Railway has realised Rs 103.27 crore as cancellation and clerkage charges on reserved tickets during 2016-17.
Effective from November 2015, the cancellation fee for a confirmed AC 3-tier ticket, 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, was revised to Rs 180 from Rs 90, while for AC 2-tier it was made Rs 200 in place of Rs 100.
The cancellation fee for a sleeper class confirmed ticket was doubled to Rs 120 while the charge for second class was increased to Rs 60 from Rs 30.
Earlier, passengers had a six-hour window before the departure of the train and a two-hour one after to cancel their ticket and get a refund.
Under the new rules, there is no option of any refund after the departure of a train, while there is only a four-hour window to cancel and get refund before the train leaves.

Mumbai: Passengers on the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani and August Kranti Rajdhani will have the choice of opting out of the on-board catering service while booking tickets for these trains.
The move has been implemented in several more trains across the country where the catering is under the management of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
"Passengers will have to exercise the option mandatorily at the time of booking," Western Railway chief public relations officer Ravinder Bhakar said. "Passengers will not be able to change the option once selection is made at the time

of booking."
The railways has advised the IRCTC to ensure provision of e-catering facilities at stations on the route so that passengers have the choice of opting for local cuisine.
Passengers welcomed the decision to have optional catering on Rajdhani. "I prefer Jain food, bereft of onion and garlic. It is a waste of money for people like me who pay for food but do not consume it," Mulund resident Akshay Jain said.
"I am a diabetic and have to forego the food for health reasons. This is a very good step," Ghatkopar resident Suman Shah said.
Another passenger said after the CAG report which found the meals unfit for humans, it was time for a rethink for many passengers. "I would rather carry home-cooked food when travelling in train," the passenger said.
Catering charges range from Rs 295 to Rs 350. A family of four travelling by the train can end up saving more than Rs 1,000 on opting out of the catering system.
The IRCTC is likely to seek feedback from passengers not opting for food to better understand their needs.
