Namma Metro has so far earned Rs 1,659 crore from operating trains on four lines with a total length of 48.3 km
Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has asked the BMRCL to explore newer ways of generating revenue so that it becomes profitable in the near future and cuts down the operational costs.
At a review meeting on Wednesday, the chief minister, who also holds the portfolio of Bengaluru development, asked the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to look beyond ticket fares to generate revenue and encourage commercial activities at stations and on premises.

Metro's daily ridership had reached 6.1 lakh, which earned it a record Rs 1.67 crore. But the corporation's average monthly revenue is just Rs 10.14 crore, Yediyurappa said.
With the central government having approved the construction of the metro's Phases 2A and 2B (which will link the Silk Board junction with the airport), the chief minister asked Chief Secretary P Ravi Kumar to hold joint meetings with different departments to ensure coordination for the speedy implementation of the projects.
The chief minister said the tendering for the 21.01-km suburban railway corridor from Baiyappanahalli to Chikkabanavar would be completed by October and directed officials to start the work soon.
The doubling of Baiyappanahalli-Hosur (48 km) and Yeshwantpur-Channasandra (21.7 km) railway lines has been going on at a cost of Rs 323 crore, he said. He also asked officials to fast-track the construction of 20 railway bridges that will eliminate level crossings.

The solar power plants have been installed as part of Indian Railways' vision to achieve zero net carbon emission by 2030
Solar power has helped Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) save Rs. 3 crore of electricity bills in a year giving a boost to Indian Railways' efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
The NFR on Saturday said the annual savings was achieved following the commissioning of solar power plants with the capacity to produce 3893.233 KW on the rooftop of various buildings.
"This

resulted in the achievement towards annual savings of Rs. 3 crores from the yield of 4 million units (KWh) of electrical energy generation by harnessing solar energy," NFR Chief public relations officer, Subhanan Chanda said in a statement on the occasion of World Environment Day on Saturday.
The solar power plants have been installed as part of Indian Railways' vision to achieve zero net carbon emission by 2030. It has so far installed about 114 MW of solar rooftop plants in over 1,000 stations and 400 service buildings across the country.
Headquartered at Maligaon in Guwahati, NFR covers the entire Northeast, West Bengal and parts of Bihar.
"We have achieved a 73 per cent increase in installation of renewable energy sources and 25.83 per cent increase in renewable energy generation during 2020-21 in comparison to the corresponding year," Chanda said.
Solar power plants have already been commissioned on the rooftop of several buildings under the Katihar division (Bihar), Alipurduar division (Bengal), Rangiya division (Assam), Guwahati sub-division, Lumding division, Tinsukia division, Dibrugarh and New Bongaigaon workshops, Guwahati sick lines, besides others.
The NFR has also switched over to LED lights in all stations and all other installations and buildings during 2014 and 2020. All residential quarters (about 5 lakhs quarters) have also been converted to LED by May 2020 to save electricity, Chanda said.

The head of a voluntary research and advocacy organization has urged the BMRCL not to start any work on the Silk Board-KR Puram-airport metro corridor and divert the resources to improve health infrastructure instead.
In a letter to BMRCL Managing Director Rakesh Singh, Sandhya Balasubramanian stated that the Centre’s decision to approve the project on April 21, amid a raging pandemic, was baffling due to its “misplaced priority”.
Listing the major problems being faced by the city, the state and the Centre, she said Bengaluru was at the epicenter of the pandemic with a high number of

deaths and infections. The black fungus infection has only made things worse.
Noting that a shortage of oxygen, testing kits, ICU beds, vaccines and even crematoriums have created panic among people, the letter called upon the government to prioritize welfare. “Life is more precious than transport infrastructure; prioritizing the metro project by tree-felling over public health sends a wrong message to the citizens,” it said.
Requesting a status quo on Phases 2A (Silk Board to KR Puram) and 2B (KR Puram to Kempegowda International Airport), she called for preparing a fresh detailed project report and making a revised comprehensive traffic assessment by taking into account the impact of the work-from-home regime.

Voluntary research organization Growth watch had urged the government to prioritize health infrastructure
The BMRCL Employees' Union on Sunday registered its opposition to a suggestion that funds allocated for a metro corridor to the airport should be diverted to build health infrastructure.
Union vice-president Suryanarayana Murthy said there are several other avenues to raise funds for health infrastructure.

funds for health instead'
“We can make use of the MP funds, MLA funds, PM CARES fund, donations from voluntary organizations, among others, for the purpose,” Murthy said, pointing out that Karnataka’s allocation to transport infrastructure is far lower than other states.
Recently, voluntary research organization Growth watch had urged the government to prioritize health infrastructure over other activities and divert funds allocated to projects like metro construction.
