UDUPI: Baindoor railway station on Konkan Railway route in the district would be upgraded with better passenger facilities, said Shivamogga MP, B Y Raghavendra. Due attention would be given to developing basic amenities at the railway station and also enhancing amenities to the passengers using this station, the newly elected MP assured at a 'Jan Sampark' meeting after inaugurating the office of MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT in Baindoor on Thursday.Issues pertaining to maintenance of national highway passing through Baindoor assembly constituency have already been already been flagged with authorities concerned for rectification, MP said. In order to deal with drinking water issues, plans have been drawn up to implement multi-village drinking water scheme, Raghavendra said, adding steps have also been taken to expedite work on the break water at Maravanthe abutting NH 66.Referring to NDA government’s flagship health insurance scheme – Ayushman Bharat – the MP directed the authorities concerned to ensure...

treatment of beneficiaries in emergency cases without bothering them much for details. Noting that delay in treating beneficiaries of Ayushman Bharat beneficiaries will be viewed seriously, the MP directed the district health and family welfare officer to liaise with the hospitals concerned.A proposal to set up taluk hospital at Baindoor has already been submitted to the government and dialysis unit will be set up there, he said. Directing revenue authorities to earmark and allot land to any proposal received for setting up crematoriums, he said revenue authorities must also provide land for early implementation of housing schemes. The newly inaugurated MPs office would receive petitions from people and strive to address them, he added.

Panathur-Belegere road in East Bengaluru has been making news for its pathetic condition, so far. But looks like it is on the betterment path now.
One of the abandoned underpasses in Belagere is being repaired for the convenience of commuters.
One of the underpasses near the Belegere Lake, which the commuters chose not to use as it is in a bad state, is now being restored.
“The

underpass will be ready for use by two-wheelers by Tuesday. Most of the apartment dwellers staying close to the lake can use the underpass to hit the outer-ring road,” said Pushpa Manjunath, local corporator.
All vehicles moving on the Panathur-Belegere road to hit the outer ring road have to pass through another main underpass, where the commuters get stranded for hours together.
But now with the repair of the abandoned underpass, the traffic might ease a bit.
“The railway underpass on the Panathur-Belegere road is too narrow that only one heavy vehicle can pass through it at a time. Adding to the problem, a large number of water tankers choke the road. Sometimes, it takes more than three hours to get rid of this 1.5 km stretch. Besides, the road is sludgy and slippery,” said Vijay Thomas, a commuter.
The residents want the road to be repaired soon.
“We need streetlights. Traffic officials need to set some particular time for water tankers as they block the road during peak hours,” he added.
“The executive engineer of Mahadevapura divison (major roads) was supposed to pay some amount to the railway department. Now, that he has paid it, the railway department should handover the underpass expansion project to an agency. If that happens, the Panathur-Belegere road is sorted,” said Pushpa Manjunath.

MYSURU/MADIKERI: Seeing red over the proposed four-lane national highway between Mysuru and Madikeri, environmentalists, citizen groups and Kodagu residents have decided to stage a massive protest against the project, pointing to the irreversible damage it could cause to the environment. President of Save Kodagu and Cauvery campaign Rajiv Bopaiah said that a massive rally had been planned at Gandhi Maidan in Madikeri on Saturday to express the locals’ opposition to the project.Stating that the highway project, coupled with the two railway lines that were planned to connect Kodagu with the rest of the state, would result in the loss of a whopping four lakh trees in the district, Bopaiah said, “These projects are estimated to cost Rs 10,000 crore. If they are implemented, hundreds of families will be displaced, and the damage to the environment in the region will be irreparable.”Expressing fears of such depredations on the environment having on the...

rainfall pattern, Bopaiah said that this would adversely impact agricultural activity in the district, since it would affect coffee, black pepper and cardamom cultivation. “The people of Kodagu are already living in fear of landslides and floods. What is worse, the quality of water of Cauvery and Lakshmana Teertha is deteriorating because of various reasons. If we allow the authorities to cut trees for construction of the highway, we would be inviting nature’s wrath in the future,” he said.Pointing out that the traffic density on Mysuru-Madikeri road did not meet the criterion to justify its expansion to a four-lane highway, Bopaiah said, “For the road to be turned to a four-lane highway, the traffic volume on the road must be 10,000 vehicles per day, whereas it is just 2,000. The government is taking up this project because of pressure from politicians, who own vast tracts of land in the region, and timber mafia.”He added that the government must focus on ensuring connectivity to the rural parts of the district instead of thinking of huge infrastructure projects that posed serious threats to the ecological balance of the district.‘Projects will only harm Kodagu’Members of Coorg Wildlife Society will also be a part of the protest scheduled on Saturday. President of the outfit Colonel (Retired) CP Muthanna opined that the Rs 10,000 crore-fund that the infrastructure projects were estimated to cost could better be utilised to develop the entirety of the Malnad region in a sustainable manner. “The government is not willing to shed just Rs 1,000 crore to help the distressed people of Kodagu, when we were reeling under floods but spending such an extravagant sum on projects that will harm, and not benefit, the people of the district. Kodagu does not need railways and national highways,” said Col Muthanna.Cauvery Sena convener Ravi Chengappa said that they had filed a petition in the court opposing the railway and national highway projects. “The rally held on Saturday will start at Thimmaiah Grounds at 10am and end at Gandhi Maidan. If the chief minister’s visit to Madikeri on Saturday is confirmed, we will hold the protest at Thimmaiah Grounds, and submit a memorandum to him,” said Chengappa.
