Over a month after raising the platform ticket fare at three railway stations, the South Western Railway has done the same at 11 other train stations in the Bengaluru division, starting Wednesday.
Platform tickets are KR Puram, Bangarpet, Tumakuru, Hosur, Dharmapuri, Kengeri, Mandya, Hindupur, Penukonda, Yelahanka, Banaswadi, Carmelaram and Whitefield railway stations will cost Rs 50 from October 21 to November 10. The hike is to ensure non-travellers do not enter stations in the wake of Covid-19, the SWR said.

Saheli' is aimed at responding effectively to any security-related issues faced by women, the national transporter said in a statement.

As per the initiative, teams of women sub-inspectors will interact with passengers at the starting station and provide emergency contact numbers. These teams will remain in touch with a specified number of women passengers throughout the journey.

The Railways said that a concerted drive will be launched against those involved in human trafficking, who may take advantage of the festive rush to target women and children.

It has also asked its field staff to launch intensive awareness campaigns among passengers regarding the Covid-19 guidelines to be followed at stations and on trains.

At present, the Railways is operating 682 special trains and 20 cloned services. It will operate 416 festival specials from October 20 to November 30 to meet the rush.

Indian Railways is likely to do away with pantry cars from trains and replace them with AC-3 tire coaches once train services normalize post-Covid-19.

The railway is of the view that passengers can be provided with packaged food prepared in the base kitchen. Besides, e-catering will also remain for the supply of food, said an official in the railways.

present, around 350 pairs of trains, including Mail/Express, Superfast and Premier services, have pantry cars, which prepare hot food for passengers.

The railways is expecting that by replacing pantry cars with AC-3 tire, it can earn additional Rs 1,400 crore revenue.

It is also planning to do away with the supplying of blankets, pillows, bedsheets, and hand towels in the post-Covid journey. Instead, it plans to supply disposable linen on payment basis at station premises.

At present the railways, which runs only special trains, is not operating onboard pantry cars service and also not supplying lenin, to prevent the spreading of Covid-19.

Interestingly, the suggestion to replace pantry cars with AC coaches came from two railway unions, the National Federation of Indian Railwaymen and All India Railwaymen's Federation.

Accepting the suggestion, the Railway Ministry top brass were also of the opinion that pantry car catering services can be replaced by e-catering, base kitchens, train-side vending, static catering units at stations en route.

"Already IRCTC (Indian Railways Catering Touring Corporation), which is responsible for catering in railways, already set up several base kitchens. In future also it will set more kitchens in different places and supply hot cooked packed food to passengers," said an official.

Since the pantry cars are operated by private contractors, there was no impact on railways jobs, said the official.

However, private pantry car contractors fear that the removal of pantry cars may hit around 10,000 to 13,000 jobs as each pantry car engages 30 to 40 staff.

With the All India Railwaymen's Federation (AIRF) observing "Bonus Day" today demanding the government grant productivity bonus for the year 2019-20, the Railway Ministry asked its field offices to ensure smooth functioning of its network.

"There should not be any room for complacency on the party of railways administration and all necessary steps must be taken to ensure discipline and smooth functioning of rail movement," the Ministry of Railway said in a communication to zonal offices.

"It must be ensured that railway servants need to seek necessary permission from the competent authority on their respective railways and production units to leave their headquarter," the communication said.

If bonus is not declared by October 21, we will be forced to repeat the history of 1974,” said Shiv Gopal Mishra, general secretary of the All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF).

Despite meeting the Railway Minister to press the demand, no order issued granting bonus so for, he said.
